About the host
Hosted by Denny Ward
Hey, I'm Denny. My wife Stephanie and I live outside Baltimore, and we own and look after two cabins here in the West Virginia mountains. This is the first one.
We're both happiest outside. I mountain bike, snowboard, and surf, and most of our favorite weekends have just been about getting somewhere quiet with trees around it. That's really how we ended up on this mountain. Pileated Perch is the kind of place we'd book for ourselves, and pretty much everything in it comes from that. A hot tub that's actually hot when you pull in. A screened porch you'll end up eating every meal on. A whole separate building out back full of arcade games and a pool table for when the weather turns.
We've also got three dogs who come with us just about everywhere, which is why this place is genuinely dog friendly and not just dog tolerant. Yours get the same run of it that ours do.
And I'm hands-on. I answer my own messages, usually pretty fast, and if something isn't right I'd much rather hear about it while you're still here than read about it later in a review.
Why they chose this property
Sleepy Creek Mountain is the quiet side of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, and that's exactly why we're here.
The cabin sits inside The Woods, a wooded resort community spread across about 1,800 acres, and the back of it runs straight into the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, roughly 23,000 acres of public mountain land. About 25 miles of the Tuscarora Trail run through it, along with Sleepy Creek Lake, where people fish for bass and crappie and paddle around in the quiet. You can spend a whole day out there and barely pass anybody.
Closer in, the resort itself has two golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness center, and the Sleepy Creek Spa. A day pass gets you in, which is a good option to have when it rains or when half the group wants to do nothing.
Berkeley Springs is a short drive west, a genuine old spa town built around its mineral springs, with soaking baths, massage places, antique shops, and good food. Martinsburg is about the same distance the other way for groceries and anything you forgot.
And the whole thing sits roughly 90 minutes from both DC and Baltimore, which still surprises people once they get here and realize how dark and quiet it gets at night.
What makes this property unique
It's the shape of the place that gets people first. It's a true A-frame, so when you walk in the ceiling just goes straight up, with a wall of glass at the end of it looking out into the trees. There's a big bean bag parked in the corner of that window and it's the most fought-over seat in the cabin. People sit there and watch deer and turkey come through the yard.
The other thing is the porch. It's fully screened, big enough to actually live on, and it has its own fire pit and a love seat swing. Most groups mean to spend the evening inside and end up out there instead, no bugs, just the woods.
Then there's the Shedcade. It's a separate building out back that we filled with four arcade cabinets, a pinball machine, and a pool table. It's the reason a rainy weekend here doesn't fall apart, and it's usually where everybody ends up after dinner.
Beyond that: a private hot tub, multiple fire pits with firewood provided, a grill with the propane already on it, a bathroom with a dual rain shower and a river-rock floor, and a kitchen stocked well enough to actually cook in. Dogs are genuinely welcome here. And the resort's pools, pickleball, tennis, and gym are right down the road with a day pass if you want them.
