About this property
Butte Bungalow- 30+day rental- Sierra Buttes, Yuba River and Lakes Basin!
The Butte Bungalow is in "downtown" Sierra City a historic gold rush town. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a nice long (31 days or more) retreat from every day life! Our quiet community sits on the North Yuba River at the base of the Sierra Buttes. We are a 10 minute drive to the unparalleled Lakes Basin recreation area and an hour from world class downhill skiing in Truckee.
Our cozy cabin is a great space for a family. With a queen bedroom, a bunk room (double over twin) and a large loft with queen bed, 6 people can sleep with privacy and comfort.
The main living space consists of a fully stocked open kitchen, a wood stove, multiple storage cabinets, as well as a super cozy seating area to lounge after a day frolicking in the mountains. A library ladder can be used to access the large loft bedroom. There is a single bathroom with a shower and washer/dryer. The entryway is spacious and there's plenty of room for hanging coats and leaving shoes.
In addition, there is the possibility of using the private cottage just off the back deck which has a desk for working remotely and a queen bed. Please ask specifically if you are interested in using the cottage.
Our large yard accommodates a fire pit, hammock and slack line as well as a BBQ and outdoor dining table for seasonal use.
Important note about cleaning:
I hate confronting people about this or charging fees, but it seems I have to be explicit. We do not charge a cleaning fee and we do not have a house cleaner. Part of renting our cabin is the expectation that the cabin to be returned to the condition that it was in when you arrived.
This is our family cabin. We share it with the guests who are coming to stay for longer periods of time as a temporary home. We generally come up in between guests to make sure things look good. Depending on the season it can be hard to resupply everything during a short weekend trip for us. Get the next guest started so they don’t have to run out on day one to buy toilet paper or salt or laundry detergent. This is not a short term vacation rental where we have a staff house cleaner coming in multiple times a week to restock and clean.
We have had a problem with people hiring local house cleaners and not checking their work. House cleaners have left the doors open, left cleaning supplies scattered around the house, left unfolded towels in a pile etc. The house cleaners are not familiar with our place and need explicit instructions.
If you rent our place you are agreeing to clean thoroughly, restock essentials and leave everything put away basically the way that you found it. Use common sense and decency. Get the next guest started and leave it the way you would want to find it if you were arriving for a vacation.
Electricity
The cabin has a remote controlled Mini-Split that provides heat and air-conditioning. There is AT&T Internet 18 Mbps, which has been sufficient for our family to work remotely, stream movies, conduct meetings on zoom, and communicate reliably. The adjacent cottage/office has a computer screen, keyboard and mouse for you to use with a laptop.
Part of living in our remote location, means very occasional PG&E blips. Obviously when the power is out, the internet and temperature control is out. That being said, we have spent weeks at a time at the cabin and have not experienced a power outage. It is most likely in the middle of winter, or during high fire season in late summer although it usually is a short outage. In the winter, the wood stove provides enough heat so you will stay warm without an electric heater.
Groceries
Feel free to use the address for the Sierra City General Store (213 Main Street, Sierra City, CA 96125) search relevant distances for your familiar needs. Check out their webpage for a live webcam of the town! We are a 1 minute walk from main street.
For a month stay at our cabin I recommend a big shop at your favorite store and Costco for as much as you can before you go.
- Sierra City General Store has very basic provisions mostly aimed at backpackers.
- Downieville (15 mins away) has a market that has recently opened with a better selection of food (but not your big grocery shopping.)
- For weekly fresh provisions, the closest best market, with organics, deli, butcher, produce is The Graegle Store 30 min away or the Feather River Food Coop in Portola 45 min away.
- Bigger supermarkets (Raley's, Safeway, Grocery Outlet) are just over an hour away in Truckee, Nevada City/Grass Valley or Quincy.
- Reno is 1.5 hours and you'll find all the big stores there.
