About this property
Whispering Trees Cozy Country Cottage
The "Whispering Trees Luxury Cottage" is your quiet, cozy country getaway just 2 miles from town, across the street from the Mad River and 5 miles from the beach. Cruising up the long driveway, you'll be welcomed by our rescued Mustang horse, donkeys & goat. We welcome guests of all backgrounds and love making new friends. Having lived on the North Coast for over 40 years, we're a great resource to make your stay memorable. Guests tell us they love our private country setting that is just a hop-skip-and-jump from town with amazing restaurants, nightlife and shopping; as well as close proximity to stunning beaches, forests and other natural attractions. We have an additional popular suite on our property called, The Blue Room.
The Space
Tracy loved hosting guests in The Blue Room so much that she asked Patrick if he’d be willing to convert his woodshop into a full apartment. Being the craftsman that he is, he took on the project with gusto and created what we consider to be a work of art. He made all of the baseboards, windowsills and trim by hand as well as most of the furniture. The bed, bookshelf and kitchen counter trim are made from reclaimed redwood. The fireplace mantel is from a cedar tree that is still living on our property.
Majestic trees can be viewed out of every window. You’ll enjoy having your own private patio and yard where you can rejuvenate in the fresh coastal air. Listen closely as you take in the sunrise or sunset and you may hear the peaceful whispering of the towering majestic trees (or the hee haws of the donkeys wanting more carrots!).
Your kitchen is fully equipped to make a gourmet meal, or even bake a cake! We provide coffee, tea, creamers, sweeteners, spices and a little surprise or two. There is an electric BBQ on the patio for your use. Upon request, we can provide a portable fire pit and cornhole game (weather permitting).
There is a private bedroom with a queen bed and a new 4-inch Tempurpedic topper and cozy bedding. A Patrick-crafted armoire is provided for your clothing.
Up to three additional guests can be accommodated in the living room: two on the full-sized futon and one on a single-sized futon chair that converts to a bed.
The bathroom is complete with a shower and tub.
The high ceilings and warm lighting throughout lend to an open-air and spacious feeling. The propane fireplace warms the space quickly and creates a cozy glow. You’ll enjoy access to a wide variety of programming via the Roku TV and unlimited, blazing-fast wi-fi access as well.
Guests have declared they have everything they need and love it so much they could simply stay forever. Your comfort is our #1 priority.
Guest access
We have created the Cottage Space to be self-contained with your own patio and yard so you can enjoy privacy during your stay. We encourage you to visit with our outside animals and feed them the carrots or other treats we provide through the fence. We have another unit on the property, as well as our own home. We have created guest spaces in such a way that everyone can enjoy their privacy.
Other things to note
Guests are also welcome to use the basketball court (usually there is sidewalk chalk for you to express your creative side). We provide carrots for feeding the animals through the fence. Guest pets are welcome with pre-approval, please.

About the host
Your host

We love being hosts and consider it an honor to help our guests have a memorable experience in what National Geographic listed as one of the most beautiful "must-see" places on earth: The California Coastal Redwoods. Tracy moved here in 1980 to attend Humboldt State Univerity (now Cal Poly Humboldt) and quickly knew this would be her forever home. It was the ideal place to raise a family and enjoy various entrepreneurial pursuits. Now that the kids are grown with families of their own, Patrick and Tracy find great joy in sharing their unique space with travelers from all over the world. Having lived here for over 4 decades, Tracy loves to share all of her local faves with guests. Yes, you'll get the inside scoop!
Why they chose this property
We can't tell you how incredibly blessed we were to find this property and home. The first year we lived here, Tracy felt guilty thinking the previous owners must surely realize they made a huge mistake and regret that they ever sold it! It's a unique, peaceful little slice of heaven; with just over 6 park-like acres you'll feel like you're way out in the county, yet you're just a couple of miles from all of the amenities of town and a short drive to stunning beaches and forests.
What makes this property unique
"You had me a donkeys!" We can't tell you how many guests say that! If you're an animal lover, you're going to love your stay. Our horse, donkeys, goat, super friendly pup, Baloo, and two cats will make you feel like a part of the family. If you don't like waking up to a hee haw and a donkey face begging for carrots through the fence, this probably is not the place for you!
