Long Island is one of the most unique islands in the Bahamas. For many people, it is considered the hidden Bahamas. On the northern tip there are dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the dark blue water where Columbus anchored the Santa Maria when he discovered the island in 1492. The beaches are incredible. Talcum-powder fine white sand and crushed pink and brown shell cover some of the most stunning beaches in the Bahamas. The water is clear, warm, and turquoise blue. From hillside perches, where cool trade winds blow, you can look down to stretches of spectacular coast and water so pristine you can see multiple shades of blue in the depths of the ocean. Yet this island has much more to offer than its natural beauty; it is safe, easily accessible by air, close to the United States, and home to friendly English-speaking locals.

If you have any special requests please let us know. If you need some groceries, beer, liquor or soda we'd be happy to pick that up for you so it will be ready upon arrival...nothing like a nice cold drink after a day of travelling.

Same thing with arrangements for Rental Cars, Fishing guides, restaurants..whatever !!! We are here to take the mystery out of Long Island so you can have a stress-free stay and pack in as much fun as possible while you are here.
Veggie Garden in Season. Herb Garden at your front door.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore Long Island, which is the most attractive of all the Bahamas out islands, with quaint settlements dotted between gentle rolling hills. Here nature is still unspoiled. Historical sites remind us of the interesting past and where people are amongst the friendliest in the Bahamas. This is the perfect spot for a Bahamas vacation of a lifetime!

Great hosts

Dan and Sara go WAY beyond the usual to provide help regardless of the problem, including my several falls due to physical problems and helping see that my dog has a pet permit.

Sublime and peaceful

We had a great time even though it was unusually rainy. Dan and Sara were very helpful and friendly. The beach down the street was lovely and deserted and you could walk for miles gazing at the azure waters while being caressed by the balmy breezes. We don’t want to leave and hope to return soon!

I am booked for next year

I can't tell you more than the other reviewers as to why this is so great. I can tell you that I have been coming to the Bahamas in February for seven years, and this is the first time I've rebooked, even though all the previous places were fantastic.

Great place to stay; comfortable, clean, and everything works

This one level cottage - built by owners and hosts Sara and Dan - features a basic floor plan with decent sized rooms nestled within the island vegetation. It is well equipped with all the needs you'll require to enjoy the quiet location and near-by island beach just a pleasant 500 yard walk from your door. The front porch - like all other open areas - is well screened and the evening cool and light breezes were super. The ceiling fans in the main rooms provided all the comfort we needed. We loved all of it! Palmirage Cottage is convenient to Long Island's central artery - the Queen's Highway - and a rental car is essential to maximizing your travels. Best of all, Sara and Dan know the lodging business well and were always helpful with local knowledge and assisting with special needs. Subjects like veggie gardening, building, and boating drew enthusiastic responses. Much to enjoy here!

This cottage is a winner!

Anyone looking to rent a place on Long Island in the Bahamas would be lucky to find this winner! Not only is it a perfect place to relax, put up your feet with a mere 5 minute walk to the beach, but it comes with owners who are attentive to your needs, but ensuring you your privacy. Let's talk about that beach. Almost all the time we were there ( a month) we were the only people on the beach. Shades of blue anchored by up to your ankles sand. The perfect beach is your very "own" beach. The cottage has everything you'd need and it is clean and well maintained. Kayaks? got it, barbecue? got it, screened porch? got it, hammock? got it....you get it? The owners, Sara and Dan are very involved in the community and will steer you in the right direction for whatever floats your boat. Happy hour at Club Washington on Wed. night, Rake and Scrape at The Green Leaf on Friday night or just where to find the best beaches on the Atlantic side. You won't go wrong here. "All is good"

Cottage perfect for our Long Island getaway

The cottage was even better than described. It was very comfortable, well outfitted and in a nice spot. The things we really appreciated - the kitchen was well equipped with nice pots and pans to cook on, a nice gas stove, and a pantry with some essential items so we didnt have to supply everything from scratch. The internet worked great and that was nice so we could stay in touch and watch netflix. Sara and Dan are very nice and accommodating, ready with suggestions and other help. They planted our own little spice garden right outside the door and gave us veggies from their garden. Our daughter stayed a few days and the pull out sofa was fine for her. The location was mid island and not far from the main store, walking distance from a lovely beach. They offered us the use of their sea kayak. The island is very relaxing, nice people and great beaches. Highly recommend.

Amazing place to stay

Sara's cottage is incredibly beautiful and spacious. The cottage is equipped with practically everything that a visitor would need in Long Island, including drinking water, bath needs, kayaks, snorkeling gear and a comfortable bed. The cottage is nestled in a quiet area, with close proximity to the beach. Sara was also extremely friendly and helpful with plenty of advice to give about the island. We truly had an amazing experience. Highly, highly recommended and will definitely stay with Sara whenever I'm in Long Island again.

We would highly recommend this property to any couple. Sara and Dan thought of everything- including use of bikes and kayak and supplying drinking water at no extra charge. They have a great T.V., lots of movies and satellite music. Their cottage is the best we've rented in seven trips to Bahamas outislands and our fourth time to Long Island. We also rented our nicest car from Annie's-the car is a must as there is lots to see on Long Island. Sara suggested we tour Cartwright's Cave, which was right on as a must-see. We love the people on Long Island, the great bonefishing, and the many beautiful deserted beaches. We will return and thanks again to Sara and Dan for the best stay.

Wonderful Piece of Paradise

Sara and Dan were wonderful hosts. The Palmirage was an excellent well kept cottage - everything you could ask for.-bikes, kayak, towels, full kitchen, nice clean bathroom, washer/dryer, beach chairs, etc. Sara was great with giving directions and pointing out great places to eat and visit. The locals are very friendly and I highly recommend the farmers market on Sat. mornings. I highly recommend staying there.....it will be on our list to return. Thank You Sara! I hope your friend was able to find the dog!

Fabulous Island Getaway

What a wonderful time we had at Palmirage. Sara and Dan are excellent hosts and provided everything we could ever need - kayak, snorkel equipment, beach chairs, towels, etc. They have really thought of everything. The cottage is great - beds are very comfortable, lots of hot water, great kitchen with everything you could want, and excellent internet service. Be sure to rent a car - Annie's Car Rental was very accommodating. The company's owner Presley Pindler also does boat excursions for snorkeling - I highly recommend you let him show you some fabulous fish! Enjoy your trip to Long Island!

Whymms Cottage

This is an excellent place to stay to base out of while exploring the entire island. Beach is a short walk away. Accurate description, photos do not do justice. Really a nice place, very clean, comfortable, with a nice vib. Owners very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property and recommend the entire island. Fantastic island to visit. Have to have a rental car as the island is 80 miles long and holds beautiful secluded beaches south to north. No report on fishing as I was too busy enjoying other aspects of the island. Nicest people I have ever met. Very safe with no worries. Cant wait to return.

Quiet, cozy comfortable cottage.

I arrived after a last minute decision. I am so glad the cottage was available. It is comfortable and has anything I would need. Most of which I did not use. I like the change of pace and great beach walks. I finished a couple of books I brought and read parts of the ones there for the spirit and flavor of the islands. Shopping is always and experience. No big box stores here, just local friendly markets. Sara's garden is producing and it is so nice to pick fresh for meals. Local restaurants offer a variety of island foods. Sara and Dan will shop or cook

It's been a quiet week on Long Island

Our first time to Long Island so we will be back! Our hosts in the main house next door were amazingly accommodating. Our trip was fortunate to coincide with their Cinco de Mayo party so we were able to meet some amazing locals as well as US ex-pats who have houses on the island. We found in our well-stocked kitchen fresh tomatoes and bell peppers from the on-site garden, as well as a dozen eggs and butter in the refrigerator, and plenty of condiments and spices. The king-size bed was very comfortable and with all the windows opened we did not use the AC. And at night on the front porch, the starry skies were a sight! And the dead quiet of the island at night - no motors of any kind in the distance save the rare vehicle on the Queen's Highway passing a half-mile away. My wife and I rent a rugged car and drive down almost all trails to all Atlantic beaches, and for the most part we were the only people on the beach. Ever. Lots of shells and sea glass. Then around lunch we would find the nearest local eatery for some great Bahamian food. We would generally be home at night for our meal, then take a dip in the warm water of the quiet-side beach a short walk from the house. There can be no more relaxing vacation than the Out Islands. The relatively central location of the Cottage at Palmirage made this trip possible. The fact that the owners literally constructed this house themselves assured attention to detail and great maintenance. And the wifi was strong due to a new signal booster, so we could keep up with home.

Perfect home base for a bone-fishing get-away

We would recommend this little cottage to any couple looking for an off-the-beaten-path getaway. It is perfect in every way ... well built, comfortable, and a five minute walk to a great beach. Sara and Dan can offer all sorts of advice about where to explore on the island, but if you are looking to relax, you won't have to leave their little street. The bikes, snorkeling gear, beach chairs and sea kayak are huge bonuses. We look forward to returning again and again.

A lovely place with lovely hosts!

This is really an ideal place from which to explore this rustic and remote island, since it is located right in the middle point of the long highway that connects the north to the south. It is also merely a short walk from a beautiful sandy beach with tranquil waters. The house is equipped with everything one might need, and it is attractively arranged. What's more, our hostess Sara was so proactive in making arrangements for airport pick-up, car rental, and scuba diving all in advance for us. She and her husband are very personable and even invited us to tag along to one of their favorite seaside restaurants, where we had the opportunity to meet and mingle with so many friendly locals. They also allowed us access to many of their own resources: bikes, wetsuits, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and so on. They really treated us as friends. All told, their guest house and everything that comes with it adds up to a terrific value and a great experience!

came down to relax after a hectic summer in which summer vacation got shortened and to look for a potentail vacation property to buy for ourselves. Sarah was so helpful in arranging a car, telling us where to shop, directions, introducing us to some other expats to really get a feel for what "retirement" living would be like down there - we really appreciated her efforts and Dan her husband makes a mean margherita ( I can never spell that - even before I've had a few). The cottage itself was perfect - clean, well equipped, a comfy bed, and a quick walk to the beach - what more could you ask for? This is the perfect rental for a couple looking to looking to totally relax and unplug. thanks so much, we'll be back

BEST EVER VACATION

STAYED AT PALMIRAGE FOR A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AND HAD THE MOST FANTASTIC TIME. THE LANDSCAPING WAS VERY TROPICAL AND THE GUEST HOUSE WAS NEW AND VERY WELL BUILT WITH PRIVACY. NO LOUD NOISES FROM THE NEXT ROOM AS YOU WOULD FIND IN HOTELS. THE BEACH HAD CLEAR, BLUE WARM WATER WITH NO PEDDLERS BOTHERING YOU AND THE MOST GORGEOUS SUNSETS. THE OWNERS WERE MOST ACCOMMODATING. I WOULD COME BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SHANGRA LA TO EVERYONE.

Retired folks

Just flying into a small airport from a large airport in Florida was exciting as the weather was outstanding and the view from up high was totaly great. Sara and Dan welcomed us to Long Island with Bambi the beach dog for a great ride to the property. The house was better then home and there is to much to see and do for one visit even though we were there for two weeks. Along with Sara and Dan we met people that have lived on the island for all their life and had very interesting stories to tell. The guest house is just the beginning of the great time we had. The sights, sounds and smells of this island can not be described. Next time I will go fishing there, photograph more and can't wait for a chance to get back. Our hosts were like family, ask them............ PS I can not say enough of the food that was available and so many places that served conch in so many ways.

Relaxing and Hospital. Easy walk to a great beach.

Sara and Dan are a pleasure to have as neighbors. We had fresh baked bagels and muffins waiting. The cottage is clean, cozy and we liked being included, when we wanted to be, in the island life. Such a variety of beaches on the island, to walk, swim and treasure hunt. So nice to shop in the family businesses. I have stayed there twice and look forward to return trips.

charming cottage

my husband and I had the opportunity to rent this quaint cottage in Oct 2009 and loved it so much stayed for 2- 6 month winters! The short walk to the white sand 3+mile private beach allowed for many awesome sunsets. Many beautiful other beaches are just 10+ minutes drive away! The cottage is nicely furnished for a cozy vacation with everything you need to relax and enjoy the island life. Dan and Sara are close by in the main house however the "beach" in between the 2 houses give a cute privacy area. AND WHAT NEIGHBORS/LANDLORDS TO HAVE!!!!! Long Island is a wonderful island and living in this cottage makes it all complete!

Quiet Island Comfort

I was fortunate to spend 10 days at the Palmirage in October of 2011. I arrived at a tiny airport where I was greeted with a cold beer and no security!! Once here, be prepared to leave the rules of mainland life behind for your stay. A short distance from the airport along the main road that runs through the island, you will find small settlements and conch shacks where island delicacies are prepared to order, but don't be in a hurry! Conch salad, fritters, fried fish, fine barbecue and even goat is commonly found on the menu! The Queens Highway is well maintained and as friendly as a road gets. With a 30mph speed limit you have plenty of time to wave to passing vehicles, but you don't want to go so fast you miss the unspoiled scenery or can get slowed down in time for the roaming herds of wild goats that appear anytime out of the dense bush. The Palmrage property is a short distance off the main road, tucked back into a lush natural setting a short walk from the beach. The architecture, decorative theme and landscaping is appropriately island influenced and a compliment to the natural surroundings. The area is quiet and undeveloped, so do not expect to hear any noise. Just the sound of the afternoon breeze rustling the leaves or Bambi, the family dog, announcing the arrival of happy hour guests. Inside the guest house the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Light fills the room, yet is airy to capture the cooling breezes. The fixtures and appliances are modern and the house is kept immaculately. The bed is comfy and you are set for a great night of deep sleep after a day of fun at the beach. Just a 5 minute walk down the road leads you to a long beach with much to offer. Sandy, rocks in some spots, but great for a long walk, shell collecting, snorkeling, lobstering and spearfishing. I had no trouble bringing back something for lunch or dinner from the crystal clear waters that see few people. The character of the island is historical, quaint and scenic. The people are welcoming and friendly and take pride in their communities and way of life. The local eateries offer a wide variety of island and American foods. Happy hour is a social sport and there are plenty of great places to meet some characters, share conch fritters and watch the sun sink into the ocean. The beaches and waters from North to South each offer different views and treasures. This is the ultimate getaway to celebrate your love of the sun, beach and ocean!

Dan & Sara fell in love with Long Island in 2000 when they were travelling the Bahamas on their sailboat.

They usually spend the winters in the Bahamas and the summers in the States traveling along with their adopted Bahamian Potcake Dog-Cinco.

This has been a perfect spot the last few years to, well, just feel normal.

Why they chose this property

This area of Long Island called to us from the start. It's convenient to many of the sites to visit on Long Island, yet is not crowded or over built. A 5 minute walk to the beach makes it great for afternoon dips in the sea, or early morning beach walks.
