The cabin was cozy and nicely equipped for 2 people. The hot tub was in excellent condition and had an outdoor TV. The cabin was within a mile outside the town of Monterey. We enjoyed the Maple Festival. Would definitely stay there again!
We had arrived pretty late at night and had a little trouble finding the place, but once we did, we found it was just as cozy as the pictures showed. The space was clean and comfortable and the hot tub was just what we needed. Not only would I love to come back but I would recommend this place to everyone.
We were looking for a quiet, out in the country place to celebrate our anniversary and came across this quaint cabin just outside Monterey, VA. The cabin is cozy, and it worked well for just the two of us. We took advantage of the hot tub which was very well maintained. We also lit up the firepit on another evening while watching the moon rise over the hills.
The cabin is just a few minutes from Monterey (which sits in the valley just below the cabin.) Monterey is a small but interesting town that had everything we needed including several nice restaurants. We recommend Claire's, High's, and The Highlander restaurants.
We used the cabin as a launching point for multiple daytrips to Cass WV (for the scenic train and a visit to Snowshoe ski resort), Staunton, and Harrisonburg (for the Skeleton Festival.) The cabin's location somewhat in the middle of all three worked out perfectly. Also, we were just down the road from the Monongahela National Forest and the George Washington National Forest which gave us plenty of beautiful October leaves to look at.
Overall, we are very happy we stumbled across the listing for the cabin. It was unpretentious and just what we were looking for. We recommend.
Wonderfully updated small cabin on the crest of Jack Mountain
My wife and I stayed at this wonderful cabin for 3 nights to celebrate our anniversary. I mentioned the anniversary in my initial message to the hosts and we were greeted with a festive assortment of anniversary-themed decorations. That was very thoughtful and personal, and set the tone for our stay. Our itinerary was to breakfast at the cabin each day, venture out for a long hike, enjoy dinner in Monterey then relax in the cabin. The cabin with its amenities (hot tub, fire pit, smart TV) and its location was perfect. Monterey is literally just down the hill, 5 minutes easy drive. Returning after dark was not a problem. We ate dinner at High's and the Highlander, both good meals with a focus on comfort food. We enjoyed coffee and a pastry at Claire's one morning. We visited Big Fish Cider for a flight one evening before dinner. These two establishments have helped Monterey step up its appeal relative to some other similar destinations in western Va. and WVa. We hiked in the Monongahela National Forest on 2 days and in the George Washington Jefferson National Forest one day. Of these, Seneca Creek Trail in WVa was the highlight. We also walked 1.25 miles from the cabin to the Sounding Knob Fire Tower for sunrise. It's well worth the early morning and 500-ft elevation gain to get there. We arrived after dark and had some initial difficulty finding the cabin, not realizing that it was immediately off Hwy 250. Reflective street numbers would be helpful. 5 star stay!

Our Story:
Orlesa Farms has always been a part of our lives. Originally established as a family farm in Augusta County, we raised cattle and grew our deep appreciation for nature and simplicity. As the years passed, we decided to extend our passion for the land and its beauty by sharing it with others. When the opportunity to acquire the Top of Jack Mountain property arose, we knew it was a perfect fit.
Nestled atop Jack Mountain, this cabin offers the ideal blend of seclusion and accessibility, allowing guests to experience both the rugged charm of Highland County and the convenience of modern amenities. Though the cabin sits in a more rustic environment than our previous bed-and-breakfast property in Staunton, the idea remains the same: to provide a serene retreat where people can unwind and reconnect with nature.
We take pride in offering a space that reflects the peaceful lifestyle we love, complete with the comforts of home. Whether you're looking to explore the nearby picturesque town of Monterey or hike through the scenic mountains, we hope you'll find your stay at Top of Jack Mountain as rejuvenating and fulfilling as we do.
Why they chose this property
Why We Chose This Neighborhood:
We fell in love with this location for its tranquil, slower pace and the sense of stepping back in time. Nestled among the trees, the cabin provides a secluded atmosphere where you can enjoy the sky and stars above the treetops, and the peacefulness of the surrounding woods. The rear portion of the property, with a fire pit, creates a serene setting perfect for reconnecting with nature.
Beyond its atmosphere, we also chose this spot for its proximity to some of the area's finest attractions. Within an hour's drive, you can explore the world-renowned Greenbrier Resort, ski the slopes at Snowshoe Mountain in the winter, or visit the nearby Hot Springs area. While you may hear an occasional truck pass by on Route 250, the cabin offers easy access without the hassle of steep, rugged mountain roads. As a weather emergency route maintained by VDOT year-round, you'll have peace of mind during all seasons, making this the ideal base camp for exploring the beauty of Highland County and beyond.
