About the host
Hosted by Todd Rountree
My wife and I have lived in various parts of north Georgia since 2011, and Blue Ridge has been our favorite getaway destination since day one. While we keep our day jobs in Athens – I’m a real estate agent, and she’s a literature professor at UNG – we split our time in Blue Ridge, now with our elementary-aged son in tow.
Our favorite part about this little slice of the Appalachian Mountains is how every visit is unique. Some trips, we stay cozy at the cabin, barely leaving our cocoon except for the occasional grocery run. Other times, you can find us shopping, dining, and imbibing in downtown Blue Ridge, Ellijay, or McCaysville. When the weather is gorgeous (as it so often is!), we enjoy hiking, tubing, biking, and exploring any number of the local orchards and vineyards. My wife especially loves to take writing retreats up in the mountains, and we’ve outfitted the house with Fiber WiFi and three Zoom-ready work spaces to ensure a seamless remote work environment.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions as you plan your getaway. We hope you enjoy this second home as much as we do!
Why they chose this property
This community is small, safe, private, easy to access in a sedan or 2-wheel drive vehicle, and only 10 minutes to downtown Blue Ridge! Door to door, it's under 2 hours to get here from either downtown Atlanta or downtown Chattanooga, 2.5 hours from Athens, and far enough from the highway that traffic is minimal. There's no thru traffic on our dead-end street.
There is a dirt race track close by (Sugar Creek Raceway). Their races are a hoot to attend; our son LOVES the action! Please just keep in mind that the noise can be heard from the house when the races run: usually May thru October, two Saturdays a month, late night. We join in the fun when our stays overlap with a race, but if it's not for you, check out the schedule on the Sugar Creek Raceway website to plan your stay around races.
What makes this property unique
Charming creekside cabins with hot tubs are a dime a dozen in Blue Ridge. We've probably stayed in nearly half of them over the years! What we kept realizing from home to home is how perfectly they were designed for vacation -- but how poorly they accommodated those of us who have the freedom to work remotely (or, those of us who cannot completely disconnect from our jobs). Enter Copper Top Cabin! We have turned this property into our own ideal form of a getaway. We've upgraded to lightning fast fiber WiFi with cozy designated workspaces in each of the three bedrooms -- all of which angle for a beautiful Zoom-ready background -- and all of this without sacrificing the hallmarks of a mountain retreat: 180' of frontage on Sugar Creek, stone-built fire pit and surrounding patio, tire swing and picnic table along the water, stone staircase into the creek, fully-outfitted kitchen (even a dishwasher!) and laundry (full-sized washer & dryer), cozy bedrooms, one with en suite bathroom, and a loft that still makes our son feel like he's in his very own treehouse. Our decor is fresh and modern with a touch of rustic chic -- none of that gaudy 1970s cabincore in more dated cabins. In short, this is the perfect getaway for couples, families, adventurers, and even professionals needing to shake up their remote work game. We just know you'll love it!
