About this property

Tent #1 at Oxen-Le-Fields Montana

With a perfect view of Sula Peak, Tent #1 is a 12x14 canvas tent featuring a comfortable king bed complete with all bedding including a warm electric blanket.

Oxen-Le-Fields is surrounded by the national forest. Watch wildlife from your tent, enjoy fishing in the river, head into the forest right from camp, or just relax and watch the stars in the night sky as the woodstove crackles with warmth.

Enjoy a rustic getaway where time slows down, living is easy, and peace and relaxation take over.

ABOUT THE TENT:
Tent #1 is a 12x14 wall tent featuring a comfortable king bed complete with full bedding including a dual-controlled king-size electric blanket, and a cozy woodstove with free firewood. Wi-fi is free, and the tent has one power strip for electronics.

Guests have access to nearby potable water and a flushing toilet. Patio chairs, propane barbecue and picnic table are provided for campers to enjoy. Relax with your favorite beverage on the patio overlooking Sula Peak and enjoy the sounds of nature.

TENT CONTENTS:
* King bed with full bedding, pillows, electric blanket
* Two cushioned patio chairs
* Woodstove with free firewood, kindling and matches
* Two lamps
* Power strip for electronics
* Two plates, bowls, mugs, and silverware
* Water kettle, cast-iron pan, oil for cast-iron pan, and cooking utensils

BATHROOM:
A flushing toilet and cold-water sink are located inside the small brown building marked "Wild Wild West" over the door.

FRESH WATER:
Potable water via a water spigot, wash basin, sponge, and soap are located behind the bathroom.

COOKING:
Guests are welcome to cook on the woodstove (oil is on the table) or enjoy the propane BBQ next to the picnic table.

WOODSTOVE:
The woodstove does an excellent job keeping the tent toasty warm. Free firewood, kindling and matches are provided.

PETS:
Pets are absolutely welcome but must be on lead at all times to prevent them from bothering the free-range chickens or disturbing other campers. If your pup likes to sleep on the bed, please cover the bedding with the provided pup sheet to help prevent claw holes (thank you!).

FIREPIT:
Toss wood into the firepit located near the picnic table and enjoy a contained fire any time burning is allowed (per county burn rules). NOTE: Campers MUST extinguish all fires by completely soaking embers with water from the provided jug to ensure all potential hot spots are fully extinguished. Refill the jug as needed using the water spigot behind the bathroom. Thank you for doing your part to prevent wildfires, much appreciated!

FOREST ACCESS:
Oxen-Le-Fields Montana offers direct access to the Bitterroot Forest. Follow the short trail behind tent #1 up to the forest road, and go either right or left to access miles of incredible scenery. Bear spray and/or gun are strongly recommended.

WILDLIFE:
Deer, elk, bighorn sheep, marmots, and coyotes are abundant. Bear, moose, wolves, and cougars also share the forest. Please respect the wildlife and understand the inherent dangers they pose. Bear spray and/or gun is highly recommended when exploring the forest.

HOT SPRINGS:
Enjoy a soak and a shower at Lost Trails Hot Springs 8 miles south for just $10.

HUNTING:
Oxen-Le-Fields is located in district 270 next to districts 240, 250, and 321.

FISHING:
Blue-ribbon trout are abundant in the Bitterroot river, and fishing access is available all along the Hwy 93 corridor. A community fishing pier is less than a mile south. Four miles north of Darby lies Lake Como where fishing, swimming, and other water activities are enjoyed by all who visit.

SKIING:
A short 16 miles south sits Lost Trail Ski Resort, home to 69 runs. Sitting atop the Continental Divide where Montana and Idaho meet, Lost Trail boasts over 300 inches of snowfall every year for enthusiasts to enjoy.

MANAGEMENT:
Owners live on-site and are happy to help anytime.

WEATHER:
Nestled between the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains, the picturesque valley is known as the Banana Belt of Montana, however it's still Montana and inclement weather can happen anytime. Please observe weather reports and road conditions before traveling.

DRIVEWAY:
The 1/2 mile dirt road up the hill includes 3 switchbacks. It can get muddy after a good rain or snow but is easily accessible in most vehicles. The road is plowed in winter, making camp accessible year round. The switchbacks can accommodate horse trailers and campers up to 35 feet in length.

REFUNDS:
We are happily located in nature and while we work hard to ensure nature stays out-side, please be prepared for the possibility of nature sneaking inside. We don’t refund for bugs or critters but if you should see some during your stay, simply contact us immediately and we will come take care of things for you as best we can.

I loved staying here, and I'm hoping to be back eventually. The only thing I'd say is that I had a little trouble finding it. Someone had to give me directions.

This was our first time "glamping". Having both grown up tenting it (or worse), we were prepared to rough it. Not the case! Super sweet hostess, the accomodations were roomy with a bed to die for. Although we didn't use the stove for more than heat and morning coffee, everything you could cook a meal easily with the implements made available. The views are breathtaking. We will be back to spend more than just one evening.

About the host

Hosted by Lynda Cheldelin Fell

Host profile image
Situated on 6 acres in the southern end of the beautiful Bitterroot valley in western Montana, Oxen-Le-Fields was created by Lynda Cheldelin Fell and her husband Jamie as a small campground to share the peaceful setting with others.

Named after Jamie's paternal family estate in England, Oxen-Le-Fields is a work in progress. Purchased in 2023, it started with a cozy cabin with magnificent views flanked by the national forest.

In the summer of 2024, Jamie erected two 12 x 14 cabin tents, both with a stunning view of Sula Peak. In late 2025, the tents' compost toilet was replaced by a flushing toilet and cold-water sink inside the tan shed.

Jamie & Lynda live on site in the toy hauler/camper while they build a "barnominium" inside the upper floor of the workshop with hopes of building a family lodge in the future.

Parents of four and grandparents of two, Lynda is an accomplished grief and trauma educator, and author of over 40 books including the award-winning Grief Diaries anthology series. Jamie suffered a major stroke at the young age of 46, forcing him to retire from an accomplished career in commercial development.

With a love for camping coupled with Jamie's construction background, they set their hearts on creating a small campground so others can experience what they enjoy every day . . . fresh air, lots of sunshine, abundant wildlife, a night sky filled with bright stars, and a relaxed way of life.

In the short time since opening in fall 2024, campers from around the world have stayed at Oxen-Le-Fields, including Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, England, Sri Lanka, France, Australia, Singapore, China, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, India, Canada, Israel, Estonia, and Mexico.

Why they chose this property

Lynda and Jamie purchased 6 acres flanked by the Bitterroot National Forest for its magnificent views and peaceful setting. An abundance of wildlife including deer, elk, and Marty the Moose routinely walk through camp.

With a love for camping and the great outdoors, Lynda & Jamie set their hearts on creating a small campground so others can experience what they enjoy every day . . . fresh air, lots of sunshine, abundant wildlife, a night sky filled with bright stars, and a relaxed way of life.

What makes this property unique

Flanked by the national forest, Oxen-Le-Fields is perched on a hill with beautiful views in every direction. Keeping it small with one cozy cabin and two wall tents means campers can enjoy themselves in peace. The location between Lost Trail Ski Resort and Darby means quick access to a variety of both winter and summer activities.
