House was idea for a large family. We really enjoyed the short walk to the ocean and loved the pool as an alternative. The cart that allowed us to carry more stuff to the beach was very useful.
Overall a great experience, the house could not been in a nicer location. Super easy to get to the beach . House was overall clean and well organized . Communication with Fred was fantastic as well
While unfortunately cut very short due to hazardous weather, which is certainly outside the control of anyone, we enjoyed our stay. The house is very homey and walk to the beach was much shorter and easier then expected.
Looking for a place to get away from crowded beaches? This one is great. My family had a great week. The pool was definitely a plus. Easy walk to the beach, and the pier is just a bit down the beach. Highly recommend!
The property was clean, easily accessible, and well-appointed. It is a beautiful home and welcomes visitors like it's their own. Our only wish was for a walkway over the dunes to the beach, but that has nothing to do with this winderful property. It is a fantastic place to stay, and the owner is more than helpful. I recommend it to anyone neddung a large home in OBX.
The house was incredible, everything was perfect. Fred, you are awesome and have set the bar high (this was our first VRBO rental.) Enjoy the ocean, the hot tub, the space- open concept, the soft sheets and the fully loaded kitchen. Wow. By the way, we ’re not even home yet but already miss the laid back Rodanthe ❤️
Love that this property as it sits away from other houses. You get the feeling you are in a private retreat. The house is perfect for a large family. It was so nice to have so many bedrooms and the bathrooms were the perfect size and location for all. Swimming pool was a great plus. Fred was very helpful and just minutes away. We rented a golf cart for a few days which was fun for everyone and very helpful but not necessary. Thanks for a great stay!
Amazing views from house, amazing opportunities to explore,
We had never been to the OBX and this was a perfect location to take in as much as possible. Watching the wild mustangs was definitely a high point. That and watching world class kite boarding.
Our host was seconds away for any needs we had, be it good or jacuzzi help!
I would highly recommend this Castke ad your new Castle.
Perfect Home Base for visiting Rodanthe and the Outer Banks
Had a great stay. The house was perfect, had lots of space, lot of amenities. Wish we had more time to use all the cool features of this place. We rented a golf cart to get down to the beach and could park it at the house. Fred had great communication. Would definitely recommend this place to stay at.
Great facility for a big family like ours. Easy access to beach and Pier. Kids loved the surf and we enjoyed the fishing (and the fish for diner). Big kitchen which is must for us. Lots of stuff to do within easy drive or walk. Pool a nice addition and the hot tub was well used. Host very helpful.
We had a wonderful stay. We had 5 adults and 5 children the house had so much room for everyone to spread out and relax. Beach is a 5 minute walk and the saltwater pool outside the door was a bonus! Fred was always available and answered very quickly to the few questions I had.
This was by far the best vacation we have had in a long time, typically go to the gulf but decided to change it up. The house was awesome, there was a hot tub was not expecting, short walk to the beach and pier. Fred (owner) was mowing grass made sure to let us know if we needed anything to let him know. Would definitely recommend this property PERFECT everything.
Enjoyed our stay so much. The house was clean and lacked nothing. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. We were a party of 9 and we had room for anything anyone wanted to do. The hot tub and pool were an extra added bonus. Loved sitting on the deck and looking at the ocean as the sun came up. Only a short walk to the beach, which we had to ourselves. If we needed anything we would call Fred would respond immediately. (Like when we locked ourselves out of the house🤣) Would definitely book this property again. Fred and Sharon were great hosts.
First time vacationing in Outer Banks. Fred and Sharon have a beautiful house with numerous nooks in which one can choose to relax. They have stocked the house with almost everything that one could possibly need. Views are excellent and the beach is just a short walk away. Hope to return again!
We loved the look of the home and really felt like we were in a castle. The short walk to the beach was a plus and we really enjoyed our stay.

About the host
Hosted by Castle by the Sea
Many generations have passed since the first O'Neal was shipwrecked on Hatteras Island. The O'Neals once owned a large strip of land, in Rodanthe, that went from ocean to sound. Over time the land was divided up and passed down from one generation to another. With each generation the lots were getting smaller, and some were sold outside of the family. Our goal was to try and save as much family land as we could. We bought the Sea Sound Motel, a small 11 room, family run motel in 1997. It is located on Sea Sound Road. It was part of the original O'Neal property. The opportunity to buy the lot that the Castle sits on came up and we were excited. How we got the name, Castle by the Sea. We briefly owned a hotel in the mountains of North Carolina called the Castle Hotel. The buildings were actually built like castles. When we sold it, much to our surprise, the new owners tore it down. One day we were talking about the Castle Hotel and remembering the fun times there with our grandsons. When we said we were sad we sold it one of our grandsons spoke up and said build a castle in Rodanthe. After looking at many house plans, we decided the victorian house was the most similar house to a castle. The name came easy. CASTLE BY THE SEA
