About this property

The 1885 Rose Cottage -Carriage House Upper Unit- Close to Cruises Strand ,UTMB

The 1885 Rose Cottage is a charming 730 sq ft historic carriage house apartment offering private luxury accommodations in Galveston's East End Historical District. Nestled on the private, fenced, and gated grounds of a stunning historic mansion, this property is a designated Galveston Landmark and a proud survivor of the 1900 Storm. Designed by renowned architect Nicholas Clayton—who also created iconic island landmarks like the Bishop’s Palace—this beautiful carriage house has been featured in multiple historical home tours, annual Christmas tours, and most recently a garden tour. It has also been highlighted twice in a notable Texas garden publication.

Please note: The apartment is located upstairs and accessed via an exterior staircase. Guests must be able to climb stairs without assistance. The staircase is safe and solid.

Inside, you’ll find a beautifully appointed space filled with carefully curated antiques sourced from auctions and estate sales across Texas. The focal point of the bedroom is an elegant 1800s iron half-tester canopy bed dressed in delicate white French lace, crowned by a sparkling Swarovski crystal chandelier. Blackout silk curtains ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. Additional storage is provided by a large 1800s English armoire with built-in drawers, along with a full-sized closet and hangers in the sitting area. A cozy seating nook features an antique French Belle Époque settee. For your comfort, we provide two luggage racks, guest robes, a sound machine, and USB power strips beside the bed.

The bathroom offers a luxurious jetted tub/shower combination. Due to the original plumbing of this 140-year-old structure, the tub sits slightly higher than modern tubs (similar to the height of a classic clawfoot tub). A sturdy grab rail is installed for safety—please ensure you can step in and out comfortably.

The fully equipped kitchen includes a refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, microwave, toaster, and a complete set of dishes, pots, and pans. A well-stocked coffee bar and tea station, along with snacks and bottled water, are provided upon arrival. Just off the kitchen, a private porch furnished with a bistro table and comfortable chaise lounge offers a tranquil spot to enjoy your morning coffee or evening tea, illuminated by soft string lights at night.

The dining area features an antique English pub table beneath another sparkling Swarovski crystal chandelier, surrounded by antique china cabinets displaying vintage and antique porcelain. South-facing windows fill the room with beautiful morning light—perfect for a leisurely breakfast.

Step outside to enjoy the lushly landscaped grounds, filled with roses, perennials, and tropical plants chosen specifically to attract butterflies. You’ll likely spot them fluttering about during your stay. The gardens have been featured on the East End Fall Garden Tour, and the main house is affectionately known as the “Rose House” for its spectacular spring display of pink Peggy Martin climbing roses. In the evenings, relax on your private grapevine-covered balcony overlooking the slate courtyard, a 12-foot fountain, and a large rose-and-grapevine-covered pergola. A Blanc du Bois grapevine trails along the balcony railing, often heavy with clusters of grapes in season. The balcony is furnished with a bistro table and chairs plus a white wicker sofa.

The grounds, carriage house, and main house are always festively decorated for the holidays, adding to the magical atmosphere.
