About this property

Private Island with off-grid solar powered cottage, private dock and mooring

Broom Island: Your Exclusive Off-Grid Private Island Retreat

Discover the ultimate island escape on Broom Island, a 18-acre private oasis tucked away in the beautiful Fox Islands (Vinalhaven & North Haven). The cozy, 1,500 sqft cottage is completely off-grid, powered by solar energy, and designed for simplicity and comfort with 3 charming bedrooms: a queen bed in the master, a full-size bed in the second, and a kids' bunk room perfect for little adventurers. The inviting living area features a native granite fireplace, a sofa bed for extra guests, and a loft for an added touch of coziness.

Wake up surrounded by unspoiled nature and sip your morning coffee on the deck. Spend your days exploring the island’s tranquil walking paths, take a swim in the ocean, fish off the dock, or explore the rocks and coves where the tides of the Mill River ebb and flow. Adventure is right at your doorstep with a double-seated kayak, rowboat, and access to the island's rental boat (a 17' Boston Whaler Montauk). Alternatively, book a private charter on our 24' Parker sport cabin boat to nearby islands or towns (additional fees apply for both).

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a boating enthusiast, there’s a guest mooring for your boat, and the island is conveniently close to Perry’s Creek anchorage.

For seamless travel, you’ll be greeted at the North Haven ferry terminal and shuttled to the island—or opt for a private charter from Rockland or another nearby harbor.

Perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a rustic, yet cozy off-grid getaway, Broom Island offers a rare opportunity to disconnect, recharge, and experience the best of Maine’s natural beauty in complete privacy.

About the host

Host profile image
I live in the Portland, Maine area and have visited North Haven and Vinalhaven my whole life. Our family has now owned property in Vinalhaven for 4 generations, and Broom Island since 1965. I am passionate about Maine, the ocean and outdoor recreation. I look forward to sharing things to do and places to go that are off the beaten path.

Why they chose this property

The mid-coast islands are, in my opinion, the most beautiful part of Maine. Vinalhaven remains unspoiled and a true lobstering and working waterfront community that swells in the summer with those that enjoy nature, adventure, and the Maine island lifestyle.

What makes this property unique

Broom Island is a truly special place. The island features granite rock, large oak, birch and spruce trees, fern valleys, and the sounds and smells of unspoiled nature. Osprey, Eagles, and Blue Heron circle the island and seals patrol the ocean on all sides. The island was first used by Native Americans and some artifacts have been found at the "Indian shell mound" including several arrowheads. Strong currents fill and drain Mill River behind the island, one of the most scenic bodies of water in all of the Fox Islands.
