About this property
The Art History House, indoor heated pool, 3 bedrooms, with two kitchens
The Art History House is a unique, spacious home with a view of Goose Creek Reservoir on the outskirts of beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. The house is furnished throughout with antiques and artwork. The ceilings, some of which are wooden, feature large wooden support beams, and many feature uplighting. My guests will enjoy an indoor heated pool with a children's water slide. There are three bedrooms included, each decorated in a unique theme, which sleep a combined total of eight. My vacation home also includes three full bathrooms and one half bath. It also has two kitchens. One of the kitchens has a large dining room table, gas stove, dishwasher, pizza oven, microwave, and a large fireplace. The other kitchen is small with a stove, microwave, dishwasher, and a small breakfast room.
The owner lives upstairs in an area off limits to the rest of the house, and is often out of town. A caretaker, who lives on the premises in a fourth themed room off the Foyer, manages the pool chemicals and water level daily.
No pets are allowed. There is a separate fee to heat the pool, which is $100 for a three-night minimum in the winter. There is no cleaning fee.
A spacious Foyer, featuring a columned piano terrace, leads through a glass door to an elevated pool terrace with a billiard table. Beyond the billiard table terrace is the heated pool. In a large, walled, private yard beyond the patio, guests may lounge in hammocks in the shaded trees. A large, gated, on-grounds parking area can accommodate as many as 11 vehicles without shuffling.
Three bedrooms are available. The themed bedrooms include, first, the Africa Room, which employs prints and masks from Africa and Asia to establish a delightful aesthetic, while the queen-sized bed makes it comfortable and snug. A full bath is attached. The second, the Old Southwest Room, is cozy and sports a Tex-Mex flair with paintings and prints reflecting the culture. This room has a double bed, and in the spacious adjacent sitting room the couch hides a trundle bed, which collectively allows the room to sleep two adults and two children. A full bathroom is a few feet down the hall and a kitchen. Third is the Early American Suite, which has antique furniture, including a chaise lounge and a side-by-side secretary desk. This bedroom features a king-size bed, as well as an attached bathroom with a closet.
There is a vintage intercom system throughout the house from the 1960s. This is kept for aesthetic reasons and has not worked in decades.
The house centers around the massive indoor Pool Room, which includes a 15,000 gallon heated pool, Spanish tile on the apron, and a children’s slide, all available to guests. A billiard table and a dart board are also available for guests to use. A large, enclosed Cafeteria connects the Pool Room to the Early American Suite. There is also a second breakfast area. There is no laundry room for guests use.
Ample off-street parking is available. A spacious outdoor patio extends from the upper pool deck to the parking lot where one can find a basketball hoop and enjoy the yard’s hammocks.
I live in Goose Creek, which is about 30 minutes from the beaches and downtown Charleston. I'm in a neighborhood about four miles to restaurants like Sabor Latino, Crazy D's grill, Chao Goiano Brazilian, Montana's seafood and hamburgers, and Parks Kitchen, which has breakfast bowls. I'm close to Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, North Charleston Fire Museum, North Charleston Wannamaker County Park, Frankie's Amusement Fun Park, Flight Adventure Park Charleston, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, the Charleston Museum and the Hunley submarine. After a long day, it's nice to take a walk along Goose Creek Reservoir from my house.
Historic Dorchester State Park is about 8 miles from the house on the Goose Creek Reservoir. There a visitor can wander through an actual Revolutionary War fort and see a fine Georgian bell tower, all that remains of an early 18th century chapel. The house is 6 miles from Charleston International Airport and 7 miles from Joint Air Force Base Charleston. Our neighborhood is quiet, with pleasant walking trails encircling the reservoir only a minute from our front door. Wildlife, especially shore birds such as the Plover and Egret, can be spotted from the outdoor pool steps. The neighborhood is very scenic and makes a great spot for photos.

About the host
Hosted by Lillie Larson
I am from New Orleans, Louisiana. I moved to the Charleston area to be near my son and his new family. I also have a son in Chicago, who I like to visit often.
Why they chose this property
I chose this house and this neighborhood largely because of the Goose Creek Reservoir, which looks like a large river. I love being able to see the sunset over the reservoir from my home.
What makes this property unique
What makes my property unique is its location, and the large indoor Pool Room. I've been told that mine is the largest indoor heated pool in the Charleston area. The Pool Room has brightly colored Talavera Mexican tile, and a long balcony over one end of the pool. Several steps up from the heated pool is the Pool Room terrace, which has a billard table and additional seating. In the Pool Room are also two fountains--a fish fountain on the wall and a peacock fountain that welcomes you as you step up to the billiard table. The soft glow of the pool light illuminates the water at night creating a mesmerizing and serene ambiance. The French Quarter scones lamps adoring the walls add a distinctive charm rarely found in other indoor pool rooms.
