Backed into the hip of Clear Ridge like a stubborn Badger insisting on a southern exposure and an ocean view; stands the house at 'On a Clear Ridge'. The sod roof renders an undisturbed profile when viewed from the north. At the south elevation a series of glass fronted rooms and redwood decks stretches from east to west and gathers in the southern sun.
All rooms enjoy views and perspectives unique to this property. A Dining Room sits apart and a 270° view insures a sunrise to sunset and mountain to ocean panorama. The fully appointed kitchen is arranged around a central island and includes a breakfast bar. Cooking is with gas.
An open, spacious living room is still 'cozy' thanks to a fireplace flanked by generous fully upholstered built-in Bancos. A house built into a ridge where every room has a view necessitates a long hallway.
This connecting element and its sky lighting allows generous storage to one side and access to 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, a lounge area and office with desk with internet access. Included with these is the Master Bedroom with a writing desk, built-in reading seat, and a skylight overhead for star gazing at night. The Master Bath allows indoor or outdoor showering.
A 2 car garage insures protected entry and provides access to the kitchen thru a double pantry. The washer and dryer and dry firewood are located here as well. The southern exposed exterior is graced by redwood decks and stone terraces punctuated by a naturally fragrant herbal landscape. Sunbathing here is healing and private.
You are never out of view of the ocean and a 10 minute walk puts your toes in the sands of Pfeiffer Beach.
Weddings, and other events are not currently permitted on Clear Ridge due to the logistics of parking, local traffic on a difficult one lane road, neighbors privacy, etc. In keeping with the spirit of small families and and a few couples we are careful not to disturb a very serene landscape. Please, no drones!!!

Special place
Just beautiful setting and views. Just a very relaxing escape. Outdoor furniture could be better and an outdoor dining table would be awesome, but all in all a great place, no doubt.

Tremendous View, extremely private, Big Sur ultimate stop
Our first time to Big Sur so we were not sure what to expect. If you are afraid of a narrow drive along the precipice then this place is not for you. For us it was perfect solitude with a view to die for. Pfeiffer Beach was on our agenda each morning before heading out for hiking. There are a variety of hikes for every taste in Big Sur. The shops in Carmel is less than an hour drive for the ultimate shopping. Big Sur lacks in variety of dining but cooking in is an easy option if you make sure an shop in Carmel before arriving. For privacy and a view to die for this is the place to go. Thank you for sharing this most wonderful place.

World Class Must Do House
This Pacific overlooking property is a rare find, not only for Big Sur, but for the world. The hot tub nearly vertically above Pfeiffer Beach, where The Terror and The Sandpiper were filmed, offers an extraordinary view. The road in is not for feint of heart; conversely the trip in for us was a delight and offered no hindrance-day or night. If you want to experience Big Sur the way it should , this property is a must.

The best Big Sur has to offer
Absolutely stunning location. My expectations were high--I live in the area and am used to spending time in Big Sur--but even the amazing pictures don't do this place justice. My friends and I were flat-out depressed at having to leave and reintegrate our usual lives! I can't recommend this majestic and serene rental enough.

Presidents Day in Big Sur
Everything about this house was perfect. We were a group of 6 adults and 2 infants and would've stayed all month if we'd know what a treat we were in for. The location was incredible - as long as it wasn't foggy there were whales for us to spy on basically at any time - the views were incredible, the sound of the ocean killed us all to sleep each night. The house itself was big enough for one screaming baby to not disrupt the other but we never felt too far apart. Delicious meals were cooked, long walks taken, and great times had. The owners were extremely helpful and friendly. No complaints across the board - we can't wait to return!

You really can see forever.....beautiful vistas.....tranquil setting
We just returned from a lengthy visit to CA. One of our stops was at this house atop the ridge. It is remote and perched high up with a gorgeous view down to the beach. You could hike down, but after hiking in Pfeiffer State Park, we were afraid we wouldn't make it back up, we were already exhausted. We thought next time..... Great hiking all around the area.
The house is well appointed and very comfortable. One lucky couple, my husband and I, got the master bedroom with unbelievable views. The skylight in the picture does not disturb your slumber. We slept well and late, comfy bed in the master.
Our friends took the other bedroom with two smaller beds (queen sized). While their room was larger and they had the TV, I think the bed seemed small. They didn't mind at all and in fact, slept well.
The house may be a tad dated, but overall very comfortable. We enjoyed the beautiful vistas. And, our contact person was great. Overall, a very nice experience here. We hope to return someday.
Tips: purchase your groceries in Carmel (WHOLE FOODS) if you are coming from the North. The nearest grocery store is about an hour away. We bought food for both nights (of course the days, too) we were at the house. We didn't want to venture down the driveway at night and go to dinner. Besides, when you are in such a lovely setting, why leave. We grilled steaks, the grill worked well.

Amazing view and location!
The home was wonderful - especially the view. It's the kind of view you hike for miles to and with the home, you can enjoy this view without walking anywhere. It's also very close to Phieffer beach.
Jay was also very responsible and helpful!

More amazing than we even imagined!!
Jay and Vance were absolutely wonderful hosts and the home and views could not have been more beautiful. The hot tub with the stars and the sound of the ocean was perfect. The sunrise while you sit and have coffee was amazing. There were views everywhere- the ocean, the mountains, the beach. I could have stayed out on that deck forever!! The driveway/road is a bit steep/intimidating, but it's fine once you get used to it! ;) We couldn't believe how close it was to pfieffer beach- I don't think there is a closer house! It is a steep walk to get there, but worth it for the view from above!! I will definitely make a trip back. Thanks Jay and Vance!

On a clear ridge you can stay forever
Our stay at Clear Ridge was spectacular. The setting is incomparable and the set-up of the house lends itself to privacy even with six guests. We cooked wonderful dinners with our adult children in the well equipped kitchen and sauntered over to Post Ranch Inn one evening for a Five Star meal. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the setting is the silence and the night sky. As inhabitants of the 21st century we seldom see the Milky Way and a full array of constellations set to the pure sounds of nature and ocean waves. Our hosts Jay and Vance were gracious and meticulous in preparing the house for our stay. We are planning a return trip.

Amazing Big Sur home
Amazing vacation rental. I think this house has the best view in Big Sur!!! We went with two other couples and had an amazing experience. The hot in with views looking onto pfieffer beach is to die for. Vance and Jay (the caretakers) were instrumentatal in helping us plan some amazing experiences (wine tasting in a limo, chef, and masseuses). Can't wait to plan another trip here!

Incredible
My wife and I spent three nights at this house for our honeymoon. It was like a dream. A 360 degree view of everything Big Sur offers. From the house one can see the beach, the coast, the mountains, the peaks ... On and on, The house itself is beautiful, with an open feeling one rarely gets to experience. It's completely private and isolated, but easy enough to find and well worth discovering. I can't imagine there's a more perfect located house anywhere in California. It's ideal.

The view, the privacy .. Big Sur at its best
My girlfriend and I were fortunate to spend 5 nights here at the close of 2012. There were too many magical moments to note here, but I'll mention a few that stood out especially.
As the first VRBO renters, proprietors Vance and Jay were quick to correct some first-time glitches we found with the property (broken Wifi and such). Otherwise, the staggering views rendered such quibbles petty.
Coming from bustling, elbows-out SF, the isolation and privacy here are startling. From sunrise to 9am, on the bench outside the main door, there's a meditative, rejuvenating window of absolute quiet. I strained but failed to hear any sign of civilization for over an hour: no cars, people, music, planes ... nothing! The visual silence is equally startling: from the deck, you have 200 degrees of vertical span (beach to sky) and another 200 degrees of horizontal span with no one else in sight. A couple of houses dot a distant ridge, but that's about it.
Beyond that, exploring the property gives moments you'll discover yourself, but here were a few of our favorites:
- The Views, of course. I've never had unlimited access to such heady views before, and I found myself constantly wandering out to the deck and just gawping at Nature.
- The Birds: hummingbirds, various coastal thrushes and starlings, ridge-soaring hawks, ravens and gulls, its wonderful to watch all the airplay from the deck. One morning I watched a hummingbird show I'd never seen: repeated climbs to 150 feet, follow by a dramatic dive. Birds-eye view? Mating ritual to show off his rate of climb? I don't know, but it was pretty cool.
- Pfeiffer beach: definitely walk down to the beach, noting that you'll need to hitch a ride on someone's bumper to pass a river crossing. Past that, you'll hit one of the neatest beaches anywhere ... the sand is purple! Really ... manganese garnet deposits in the rocks erode to a rich purple sand along the cliff faces.
- The Fireplace: the main room is built for lounging and you'll probably want to spend the bulk of your time there, relaxing in front of the fire.
I've more anecdotes, but no more characters so I'll close there. This is a majestic, romantic property and we hope to return again soon.
