Great location and lots of great qualities

This house not only has a great location, but also so many great qualities. It was well stocked, the pool and deck area was great and the house felt very spacious! There were 8 of us and we never felt cramped. Definitely a good thing they changed management companies bc you can tell the previous one let things go, but you can also tell the current one, Shallys, is working on items in between guest turnover and the little things didn’t bother us. Other good things about Shallys, they picked us up early when the captain of the ferry requested we take an earlier ferry to the island. They carried up our luggage and tons of groceries. They were very friendly and helpful! No issues with golf carts. Which is good bc they are your lifeline to the island! The pics do need updated. We counted on there being three beds in the one bedroom for our three kids, but it is now two queens. Two of our kids just shared, so it worked out alright. Minor things came up with the house, but all were handled quickly. You have to remember it is a small island and companies have small staffs, so it can take a couple hours or even the next day, but that would be with any place you stay. We love this island! It was our first time and it was great!! We will be back!!

Island Time

Our island time started on 6/25/22 and ended on 7/2/22. We really enjoyed our experience at Las Olas and North Captiva! This was our first time on the Island! The house was close to the main beach and the 2 golf carts made the trip very easy! Las Olas is situated amongst trees and other vegetation which made it feel like we were secluded. We loved the lookout tower and being able to see the gulf and bay! Being able to see the sunrise and sunset from the tower was great! The beds were comfortable and the bedroom size were good for all! Wish it did have a 3rd shower but not a huge deal! The private pool was great for cooling off in the afternoon! We loved eating our meals out on the screened porch with the breeze blowing! The pool table was used quite a bit. Would have been nice to have been able to use the hot tub- but not a huge issue for us either. The biggest challenge for us was ordering enough food/drinks - luckily our property manager- Ally- was very helpful and responsive when I needed to put in another order. The fire dept on N Captiva are an awesome group of professionals. Island Girl Charters was awesome in transporting us across the bay! Be sure to take plenty of bug spray and sunscreen. We were able to see dolphins and saw a turtle crawl. A manatee swam behind us one day while we were at the beach! I loved not having cars on the island and the non-commercialization of the island! Was very sad when we had to leave!

Loved our stay

Las Olas is currently undergoing some repairs so be prepared for some of the walls to not be painted or finished, the screened in porch is not really screened-in due to a missing door and missing panels. We did have recurring problems with one of the golf carts which was a bit disruptive with our group because there were 6 of us. Despite these things we still had a great stay and Ally, the property manager, was very responsive to our needs.

Work in progress, comfy stay

Las Olas needs some TLC but we did have a fun and relaxing stay. We arrived and found a very large hole leading to the outside in one of the bedrooms. Workers were present to address the repair of water damage that evidently was more than expected. The workers were there for 2 days but they were courteous and offered to work around our plans each day. Sean the property manager was very attentive to the situation and responsive to our requests. His management company had just recently taken over Las Olas and he was aware that the property needed attention, deep clean, overgrown yard, leaky window... But more importantly, the bed were comfy, the linens plentiful, bathrooms clean. Lots of supplies of everyday items in the kitchen to cook meals for my family of 8. The weather was great so we were outside all day. Beach is a short walk or a shorter golf cart ride. There were several beach chairs, 2 beach umbrellas, and a cooler. The pool had a few floats but we brought our own and even found an electric pump to inflate them. The legs of the pool lounge chair were broken but we used the chair just laying on the deck. The deck by the way did have several holes which may present a trip hazard for young children. There were also several Adirondack chairs at the pool. The hot tub is not functional and this needs to come off of the VRBO description. This has been mentioned in other reviews as well. Kayaks are present but we did not use them. If you have a rainy day Las Olas has lots of books, puzzles, DVDs, and games for all ages. There is also a play station and Wii gaming system but we did not use so not sure that they work. A pool table and ping pong were also available. The screened-in porch is large and we ate a few meals outside but some of the screening was missing due to the repairs so nighttime bugs kept us inside. Bring bug spray even for daytime activities. Crow's nest is great for sunrise and sunset viewing. Overall a good stay, well-equipped property but it needs some polishing up to be a true gem. Thank you, Sean and family, for your attention during our stay. Thank you, Joe, for your consideration of our experience.

Las Olas

The house was almost was we expected. You can tell there has been some lack in maintenance in the home which is quite sad because it was probably one of the best homes on the island at one point. The new maintenance company seems to be trying to resolve these. The layout of the home was great and worked perfectly for my family. The downstairs area gave us plenty of things to do when the sun was just too hot to be out. I would probably rent this home again once all the maintenance is completed. Ally, with the new management company, was super nice.

The island is paradise…property manager not the best.

The house was good. The beach is fantastic. The island is a paradise. We had a few issues. We were there about two days before we realized we were contacting the property owner in supposed to be calling The property managers. They picked us up and dropped us off at the house. There are a lot of stairs in this house and I was told in writing that somebody would be taking our luggage up the stairs for us. That was not the case. They dropped us off And We didn’t hear anything for a few days. The house was supposed to come with two golf carts. One of them was broken. We were given a loaner cart and it was horrible. It kept breaking down. We couldn’t get them to care, or bring us a replacement loaner. At one point they took it for repair and it resulted in a small accident and injury. We adamantly contacted the propertymanager group, and never heard back. Since this was 2 nights before we left, it left us with only one cart the next day and still never heard anything until it was time to leave. You have to understand, the golf carts are your life line on to the island. We also understood that we had a hot tub on the property. This was based on the pictures that were on the website. It was inoperable. The owner seemed really helpful in email. The property manager group was not. They had very poor communication. I will we visit this island, but Not with turtuga properties. When you come to this all and make sure you bring a lot of bug spray and sunscreen and food and beer. The cost of everything on the island is high And the restaurants, only a few, are very expensive. My family and I had an amazing vacation other than a few problems

Issues: 1. observation deck is very dirty and isn't really usable at this point. It also is very unsteady! 2. Brown wicker like lawn chair is broken. 3. Hot tub isn't working, no water, very dirty and smelly water. When we looked at the house, the advertisement for the house shows the hot tub in working order and continued this way until we arrived on the island and realized it isn't working. One of the key elements when looking for a house, was the hot tub!! I was thrown off a motorcycle last May and I have a lot of neck and back pain. The hot tub is a must for me and my recovery!! 4. The property has been left a disaster. A lot of garbage is still around the property, cracked plastic easter eggs. The area where the garbage is picked up, is very disgusting and still is. We did not get into our house until 6:20pm the day we arrived, check in was supposed to be 3:30 pm! We had to wait on the deck area until we could get into the house. Garbage was left in the garbage can as you enter the house and is still in there with no bag put in there. Wet towels were left in the washer. Only 3 garbage bags left for us. Floors left sandy. Garbage was left on the floor by a dresser with a dirty pair of men's underwear. 5. There is a pile of lawn chairs where the kayaks are that were never put away properly. Weber grill broken and sitting on it's side. 6. Floor boards by the pool are very unsafe. A couple of us cut our feet on them. They did come and re-enforce a few boards, but the obvious one wasn't fixed. 7. One of the golf carts didn't work properly when we arrived and we were stranded. They came the next day to fix it, which when we once again drove it, it stranded again on us and tortuga never replied. We had to get a tow back from a local person. They gave us another larger golf cart, that doesn't work properly and feels like a tire is loose. Very disappointing! I think some money returned would be reasonable as this property was not what was listed!! False information and poor management!

Misleading

We chose this place because of the amenities and they were misleading. The hot tub was not even working. It looked messy with pool hose and not even full of water. Along with that, the golf cart broke down and we were without one for a couple of days. We had nine people staying there so this was a bit of an inconvenience. We notified the VRBO contact about the issues when we returned and never heard anything back.

Wonderful Experience

We visited mid March and the house worked great for the 6 of us (2 grade school kids and my 75 year old parents). My only complaints would be they need a much better wifi signal and new pans (nonstick) for cooking. The island doesn't get great cell service. So, the shoddy wifi made 'working' tough. Everything else really was as advertised. Tortuga Property management really made living off grid much easier with their texting back and forth seamless.

Great house, poor property management

The owner of the property was very responsive to our needs and requests, but property managers were not easy to reach and not responsive to issues that come up. Golf carts broke down and we were left stranded. Pool was not very clean. Again this is Tortuga property management and not on the owner. Loved the house and location. Had a great time overall.

Island Great for Relaxing - House Didn't meet some expectations

I must say this island was great for relaxing. We felt safe, comfortable and calm. The beach is a stone's throw away from Las Olas and the shelling and sunsets were amazing. Don't come here if you want nightlife or excursions this place is chill! The house itself, well.... Let's just say that we reached out to the owner directly rather than the property managers. The property managers were not very proactive nor helpful. Only once when one of the golf carts broke down did they get someone out ASAP. The pool was not cleaned upon arrival and wasn't cleaned during the week (and I don't mean just getting out debris). The kitchen, although set up fantastically, was not clean and we had to hand wash every dish we wanted to use. There were, overall many things that didn't meet our expectations per the pictures and descriptions online. To be fair, the screened in lanai is wonderful, the grill is awesome and the beds were very comfortable. We also know that this property was purchased recently and that they have been doing some "renovations" and such. We don't know if the owners were aware of things because you are told to contact the management company. We chose to go directly to the owners. This could be a great place but it needs some TLC. For me, having stayed at many VRBOs, its the little details that make a difference. Here we couldn't get past some issues we felt were larger. We're giving the benefit of the doubt to the owner and hope that things can be "fixed", although it doesn't change things for us. We might go back to the island but probably not Las Olas.

Captiva experience

We enjoyed Joe’s home . Loved the screened in porch and enjoyed the pool. Had a relaxing time playing the games provided and explored the island . Our only complaint was the property management . Our one golf cart broke down and they did not help us at all . Had to cram 4 adults and beach stuff in a 4 seater cart , The owner Joe was prompt responding back to me after I informed him of the problem .

Beautiful home, beautiful island, great service!

Our great sense in us renting this home this week and it was absolutely fabulous. We have been to the island many times and the concierge services of Lori and Duncan excellent. They communicated with us in sure that we were fine getting to the island medicine promptly when we arrived on the island and carried all our luggage up to our home into our rooms. Lori‘ came and oriented us to the entire home showing us how everything worked. They even sent someone to unpack our groceries. Having all the paper products toilet paper paper towels and all the soaps was so nice so that we did not have to bring all that. Having the two golf carts was perfect. We had one small problem with the golf cart and Duncan took care of it immediately. The pool was very clean and they even had pool service one morning there mid week to ensure that it was done nicely again. The linens were of all high-quality and the beds were very comfortable. The hot tub unfortunately was not working but the owner had a great workaround with joining North Captiva Island club where we could use them at up there. It was no inconvenience to us at all. We would definitely rent this house again and I’ll be looking at renting through this property a manager saying they were so attentive and made our stay easier and more comfortable. Thank you Laurie and Duncan for all your service. And thank you Owner for having such a nice home and thinking of everything!

Love North Captiva Island

We have stayed at Las Olas 6 out of the past 7 years for Spring Break. We love the house and the island and it is wonderful for a family vacation. There has been a recent change in ownership and there is a new management team. I’m sure it will take some time to work on some maintenance issues, such as very old and not predictably functional golf carts and various maintenance issues in the house that have accumulated over time, as well as the broken hot tub. Las Olas is such a special place that I would go there despite some maintenance issues though. The management team on the island was not very responsive to texts and did not provide the personal care that we were accustomed to in years past, but they are very busy. Also the main sitting area on the screened porch, including an eating area, were not cleaned prior to our arrival. When I made the management team aware of that, they never came to remedy the situation so we just cleaned it ourselves. Some kinks to work out with the new team to be sure, but the island and Las Olas are worth it anyway, thus the 4 star rating. Hopefully it will be back to 5 stars with time.

A little disappointed

House is large, kitchen well stocked with dishes. The screened in porch off the kitchen was our favorite spot for breakfast and dinner. We played games there nightly. Lots of towels. Basket of white towels in each bedroom was wonderful. Not so nice: golf carts and running properly-management did a little to fix them but really could not do the job). They stopped running 2x and we had to be pushed back to the house- thank goodness there were lots of teenagers cruising around and willing to help. Pool area is much smaller than pictured Landscape is very overgrown Hot tub was Not working Kyaks old and filthy Laundry room was filthy and filled with stuff Ice machine in freezer did not work With all this said- There is lots of potential has it is a per Home for a small group and the island is beautiful. I believe new owners and new management tried but the newness of the ownership and property management has areas to fix

Perfect for all

Las Olas was the perfect spot for our getaway! Initially, it was just my wife and I and two dogs that we travel with, but then our daughter and family were able to visit for a week. There were enough bedrooms, the kids loved the quiet sandy lanes of North Captiva, and we really just had a great week together. The pool kept everyone of all ages occupied with fun all day, while the big broad beach was a short walk up the path away. The pool area had a fence and barrier with gates the whole way around which made hanging with our furry babies even better. The house is also close to the preserve, just a sandy block away to more hiking trails and privacy in paradise. The home service was just great-from the ferry unload and load of all the groceries the whole way to the kitchen, to the supplemental grocery delivery mid-week...the whole staff was great to have at a txt msg away. One issue with the golf cart was fixed day of to be not an issue. Just really had a blast and appreciate Las Olas...will certainly return.

Great Holiday Getaway!

Las Olas was the ideal place for our COVID holiday getaway. With five adults and one pet, we had plenty of space for everyone to have moments of solitude. My sons took advantage of the ping pong table and the pool table downstairs. All of us were able to enjoy the pool and hot tub at various times. The home was very comfortable and made for a great relaxing environment. Mark and Helen were particularly helpful with check-in and check-out and were a wealth of information.

A much needed Covid Relief!

Las Olas is a fantastic property with great amenities, privacy, and stunning views from the crows nest. We very were fortunate to have enjoyed a week of rest and relaxation. Our 3 kids (11.14.16) all enjoyed the pool and hot tub on the property. The sunrises and sunsets from the crows nest are amazing. The location is perfect as it is short walk or cart ride to the beach and in a quite part of the island. We shelled off the peninsula, hiked to the south end, fished with a guide, and soaked in the sun. Thanks Las Olas and NC for recharging us and making life long memories.

About the host

Hosted by Joe

Host profile image
We’re a family of five—three boys, a rotating crew of dogs, and a love for adventure. We discovered North Captiva Island by accident during the pandemic. In 2020, we booked a spring break house on Captiva, but it was canceled while we were en route from Virginia—minivan packed, kids and dog in tow.

In a scramble, we found a last-minute rental on this mysterious island only accessible by boat. We were skeptical… but we pulled the trigger.

We stayed for 9 weeks—and completely fell in love with North Captiva’s wild beauty, peace, and the slower pace of life. The next year, we bought a home here and started Las Olas. Then Hurricane Ian hit, cat 5 directly through our house/ Island. We’ve worked hard to reopen in the summer of 2025.

Now, we're thrilled to share this slice of paradise with other families, and we hope your stay here is just as unforgettable as our first one was. We partner with incredible people who live on the island to greet you and act as host for your stay. Come visit!

Why they chose this property

Accessible only by boat, this secluded barrier island is a true hidden gem—no cars, no crowds, just sandy golf cart paths, wild beaches, and total serenity. It’s a place where dolphins swim just offshore, sunsets demand your full attention, and nature wraps around you in every direction.

It’s the perfect blend of barefoot luxury and off-the-grid adventure—a rare escape from the real world where you can truly unplug, unwind, and reconnect.

We chose Las Olas because of its ideal location on the quiet (and drier!) south end of the island—just steps from the best beach on North Captiva and right near the untouched beauty of the 3-mile-long state preserve. Whether you're exploring the trails or sinking your toes in the sand, it's all right outside your door.

What makes this property unique

Las Olas is tailor-made for unforgettable family vacations.
Tucked away for privacy, the home offers a peaceful escape—whether you're splashing in the secluded private pool, relaxing in the open-air lower play area, or rinsing off the salt and sand in the new outdoor shower. Everything is designed for comfort, convenience, and fun.

What truly sets Las Olas apart is its prime location—a short walk to both the island’s best beach and the breathtaking state preserve. Load up the golf cart with beach gear, or enjoy the walk—either way, you’re minutes from paradise.

And yes—dogs are absolutely welcome!
Our own pups love it here, and yours will too. North Captiva is a true dog-friendly island, with happy pups playing on the beach and swimming in the Gulf, especially at sunset. If you’ve got a water-loving dog, this is their dream come true.
