House in Paradise

We had a wonderful visit in the Ohia House. The house has everything you need and more. We actually spent most of our time just lounging around the house and enjoying the grounds. They have everything you need for a day at the beach including coolers, towels, beach chairs, snorkeling gear, and beach toys. Hosts were every responsive to our questions. We would definitely stay here again.

Mahalo nui!

I would highly recommend this place! This was a move for us, not a vacation, so, like most moves, it was quite stressful but Laura was always kind & patient & understanding of our situation. Def made things SO much easier. And her home was so nice! And comfortable & it had absolutely everything you could want or need & more. Thank you so much!!!

The house itself is amazing. The pictures don’t do the house justice. We really enjoyed talking with the groundskeeper. He mentioned some people just chose to stay at the house for their whole visit and we can see why.

Private Oasis

This property is stunning!! The property manager, Royall, was friendly and very informative. They were kind enough to put up a Christmas tree for us, as we were there over Christmas, and my daughters greatly appreciated that. The extras included in the kitchen...spices, oils, etc....were a unexpected surprise. Would definitely stay here again. Most amazing property!!!

Exceeded our expectations!

This was kind of a working vacation for us as our impetuous for our visit to Hawaii was to help out a lava victim that had moved to the neighborhood. Coming to this home after a hard day of painting was such a joy... All of the rooms are large and comfortably furnished. I have to admit, though, that we spent a large amount of our free time out on the massive lanai! The gardens are immaculate and we were there when the orange gardenias were in full bloom so the air was heady with their sweet aroma. Coming from the mainland, I had never tasted a tree ripened star fruit and changed my opinion of them completely after tasting on from the garden. We dded several types of citrus to our smoothies every morning from the trees out back...yum! We had no problems finding everything needed to cook our meals in the well stocked kitchen. The beds were pretty good and there are extra fans in addition to the overhead fans to keep you cool. (We happened to be there when it was warmer and more humid than usual.). I only wished that I had contacted the owners to find out how to open the high up clerestory windows! This development can have a wide variety of home buildings...this particular neighborhood is quite nice and very quiet.. Although we were not here as tourists, we did have time to see a few sights and found the location to be nicely centered for the Hilo side of the Island attractions. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay here...it will not disappoint!.

Large Comfortable Home on a Huge Lot in a Suburb of Hilo

We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely spacious home in a Hilo suburb. It is about 30 minutes outside central Hilo, so this house is not for people who want to be close to shops and restaurants. There are many major chain stores within a half hour drive and some smaller local stores 15-20 min away. If you stock up on groceries and enjoy cooking, this is the rental for you. They had more spices than we have at home and every cooking utensil you could ask for. We bought steaks and boneless chicken breasts and grilled on the BBQ outside and it was divine. This home is also closer to Volcano National Park than anywhere in Hilo, so if you plan to go there, this home will be convenient. Its also really close to the area where the lava flows into the ocean if you are interested in that hike. We explored Hilo, Volcano National Park, Waimea, Mauna Kea, and Waipio Valley during our stay, so we were pretty active. The house itself is very spacious and could easily hold 6 people. The yard is huge--my son played soccer with my husband and the kids played with a frisbee. At night, the only thing I didn't like was the wildlife noise. Frogs, crickets, and birds made quite a ruckus. But nothing that my earplugs wouldn't block out. There were coolers available for day trips, a fridge stocked with condiments, a large washer dryer, lots of towels, and fans in every room which were needed since there's no AC. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Thanks so much!

Almost perfect

Beautiful and comfortable and spacious with smiling, helpful staff. A perfect place for our family 100th birthday gathering of 10. The open floor plan, the big lanai, and spacious grounds accommodated both a wheelchair and a walker. The amply furnished kitchen and many places to sit and gather made for a congenial afternoon. The birthday was the reason for the trip to Hawaii and the house helped to make it an unforgettable success. We slept 7 adults there and the almost perfect part comes from one bed (there are 4 more that are very nice) that is an airbed that loses air during the night so we used the couch instead. The neighbor and caretaker was instantly there to troubleshoot and he - and even his wife - went beyond expectation to make us happy. I recommend this property most enthusiastically as long as you don't need or don''t mind the soft to softer sleeping surface of the airbed. The rest of the house is furnished amply and comfortably and stylishly, and even the lanai is big enough and had enough furniture to seat all 10 of us without crowding. But for that little problem of the bed, this well designed modern house and beautiful grounds served our needs most perfectly. I've already recommended it to friends.

Great place for big family, secluded, central and well equipped

This house is amazing, is very central to Hilo and the volcanoes national park. The house is Art Deco, ventilated and very well equipped. It was really nice to be able to cook with proper utensil as well as grill. We had a great time, and the owners and Skip were very responsive. We definitely will like to come back to this house!!

Large Modern Estate with everything you need!

Beautiful modern vacation home. Very spacious house, enjoyed the open floor plan, endless windows, high ceilings, refreshingly classy amenities. Family truly enjoyed modern kitchen, barbecue, large green yards and walk in shower bathrooms. Well-maintained, almost new, in a secluded neighborhood. Took a 5 minute drive to trail along the beautiful Ocean Cliffs.

Perfect Getaway

Last summer August 2016 was our third stay and as always perfect in every way. The owners are easy to work with as well as the property manager. Perfect location for volcano adventures, hiking, and tide pools. Everything in the home is immaculate, high end, and well stocked. This summer we will be in Maui and then Kauai, yet already have plans to return to The Big Island next year and will surely to this property. Thank you from Miami, Florida! :)

An Oasis in Paradise!!!

When I first saw this property and photos on VRBO, like Liz Lemon I said, 'I want to go to there!'... and upon arrival, we were WOWed with how beautiful and amazing the property was. It met all expectations set by the profile online, and even exceeded it in many regards. The beds were comfy, the rooms and outdoor spaces perfect and inviting, the kitchen was stocked and well equipped. We were as happy returning to the house and spending time there and cooking, as we were with the wondrous and and magical places were were visiting during the day. The outdoor shower.... words fail me. So I thought I'd dedicate a paragraph to it. We all fell in love with it! Not to say it was completely flawless... a few lamps and fans could use a little repair (nothing major AT ALL), and the first night had a series of mishaps with the smoke detectors going off two or three times in the middle of the night which wasn't great for already jet-lagged folks and a two year old... However, Skip, the property manager who lived down the road was Johnny-on-the-spot... He rushed over immediately any time we called and was extremely helpful and charming. Everyone we met who came to work on the properties was a delight to interact with. Suffice it to say, I can't say enough about how much we loved getting to stay there, and would re-book this property in a heartbeat. Just know that it is a little bit out of the way from any main town, but in other ways it's nicely centrally located to many of the major things you'd want to do and see. The closest towns and markets are just a few minutes drive away. The last point I'll make is that if you rent the house, just be aware that other folks might be in the Guest House at the same time. Our first night, the crew in the guesthouse was a bit noisy, but Skip asked them to be mindful as we had a sleeping toddler, and then in the subsequent nights we had a different set of people come in who were rather delightful and more interactive. So as with anything with shared space, it could be a bit of a crap shoot... But we lucked out there for the most part. Of course if you have a larger group and rent out both spaces, then your golden... And can only complain about yourself and question your own friendship and family at that point (hehehe). Thanks again to Aki and Laura for providing and sharing such an amazing space, and to Skip and the housekeeping lady and the painter dude who came through at some point too. Amazing!

"Paradise Found"

I received specific directions to the home via email from the owners. Thank goodness they were spot on as we arrived late at night and the area has no street lights and is off the beaten track. On arrival we followed instructions again to gain access to the main house. Upon opening the doors and turning lights on there were squeals of excitement from my 3 teenage/young adult girls. An absolutely beautiful home. High ceilings, open plan, beautifully decorated, everything we needed and more. We had hit the jackpot. The following days were very busy with sightseeing, swimming and Merrie Monarch and it was always a delight to come home to our piece of paradise. The tranquility of the area also sets this property apart. Breakfasts were enjoyed out on the patio, in the fresh air, morning sun and a garden that is pleasing to the eye. Extra supplies, like beach gear and the Wifi was greatly appreciated. We loved our stay here and would recommend it without hesitation. Thank you Laura and Aki for sharing your beautiful home.

Beautiful, unique and approaching deluxe... we loved it.

We were thoroughly satisfied staying at this very beautiful and unique property. The home in very spacious with a large family/living room space with 18 ft ceilings. This place is approaching classy / deluxe status, more than I expected. Their are fans throughout the house so no shortage of airflow. The well done, hip IKEA kitchen (very well stocked) on one end with sliding glass window, nice furniture and giant TV in the middle and an awesome super-wide sliding glass window facing a perfect covered lanai and an expanse of lawn rimed with pretty tropical trees, flowering shrubs. The covered patio area is enormous, comfortable with 2 fans and pretty planting beds running along part of the patio created with dark lava rock. We spotted a family of pigs in the front yard the first morning. Not Boers, just domestic pigs that at some point were left to live on their own, which they do quite well. On each side of the main room described are hallways with full bathroom/showers. I think it was all designed to create airflow through these side channels and sliding glass windows on both ends. One side has the master bedrm, nice furniture, comfy bed, sliding window opens to patio, very fancy bathroom, walk-in shower, etc. The other side has a matching larger bedrm w sliding window to patio, and another bedrm in the middle of the hall w just windows above the queen bed. There is the guest house next door. A nice couple was there for 1 night while we stayed. It's far enough one the side and away to not be a intrusive. There's a laundry room that they had a key to to do laundry. Locked doors on both sides. Lots of supplies in the laundry room too. Last, we met Scott a couple of times. Really nice guy, lots of info and basically an interesting person I could have talked with for hours. But both times we were on our way and my wife was tapping her foot waiting on me to stop the chit-chat. If I was there much longer I probably would have offered to help with his garden work. This is the longest review I've ever left, for good reason though. This place couldn't be much better, really. Ok, well, the cable TV was tough to figure out even thoguh they had very detailed instructions--photos, arrows--still I ended up just using my roku box. We only planned 3 nights here but upon leaving thought how it should have been longer. It's a special place.

About the host

Host profile image
We fell in love with the Big Island in 2000 and built Hale E Komo Mai in 2011. Now we are building new memories with our family, friends, and especially our grandchildren. We look forward to coming back to Hawaii each year while continuing to explore this vast and beautifully diverse island.

Why they chose this property

We are excited to share our 'impractical dream' with you, with a relaxing home to return to after a full day of activities and exploring. You will be surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation and a peaceful neighborhood. We looked at many areas on the Big Island and chose Hawaiian Paradise Park for its acreage that provides quiet and privacy, while still being central to the ocean, trails, parks, restaurants and nearby shopping.

What makes this property unique

A unique and modern home designed with covered walkways that connect all areas. Impressive lava rock columns, circular planter with seating, and an outstanding outdoor shower were all hand shaped by a local craftsman. The home maximizes light and captures the trade winds and breezes, with sweet scents drifting indoors from the professionally landscaped gardens. The home is large, yet very comfortable for a couple or a large family. The grassed yard is great for the kids to play, to have a game of bocce ball or croquet, or to just relax on the lounge chairs while enjoying all the tropical trees, fruit trees and scented plants and flowers.
