The property is listed as having 2 bedrooms, visitors should note the second 'bedroom' is the dilapidated sofa bed in the sitting room.A safe is mentioned in the property amenities but there isn't one.For a 2 week stay, we were offered the use of only one drawer in a chest of drawers. The location, however, was great.
Beautiful apartment in a beautiful location. Therese was so helpful and kind. Staying at her place felt like staying at the home of a favorite relative.
This is just as shown in the photos, lovely, well equipped, everything one could want for exploring the area. The owner is attentive to txt messages and most helpful. Thank you
This rental fit our needs to the tee. This beautiful house is in the heart of Boston. Great location to everything, with ease of access to food, fun and transit. The back patio was the cherry on top, a great place to sit and relax after a fun filled day.
The location, the home and the host were fantastic!
Newbury street with its hustle & bustle, little shops and restaurants are just a block away. Do not miss La voile with its truly French cuisine or the salmon bagels at the thinking cup. After coming back in the evening from a long day out you can relax in the patio of the house and enjoy the serenity of the evening. In the morning get yourself some juice or coffee around the house or jog in the park that starts at your doorstep. Everything is near, museums, metro stations, Beacon hill, the freedom trail...We highly recommend!
Loved our stay here during the Boston Marathon. Centrally located for an easy walk downtown or to enjoy shopping and restaurants a block away. Therese met us the night we arrived. The stairs down to the bedroom were well designed and always felt safe when holding onto the railing to make it up and down. Also loved utilizing the kitchen for some meals.
A great pleasure to stay in this clean, spacious, quiet apartment on a storied street in Boston. Fully stocked with linens and kitchen supplies. Repair to downstairs toilet needed and noted by owner. Her warm welcome and patience with our late arrival (due to heavy traffic) are much appreciated. Every reason to recommend.
Like our own little slice of Boston for a few days
So happy I found this place! The location was great - Boston Public Garden and Boston Commons were a short stroll down the pretty promenade in the middle of the street, plenty of dining options, T station, and even a 7-Eleven close by. Very quiet at night, although things seemed to get an early start in the mornings.
The lodging itself was quite comfortable. Much more flexible than staying in a hotel. We even rescheduled delivery of a meal prep box so we could cook a few times, instead of eating out every night.
Therese, our host, was very pleasant, helpful, and easy to communicate with. I wish we could have heard the stories behind the pictures in her home. (but maybe that's just my own curiosity...)
All in all, I would absolutely stay here again. I only wish it could accommodate two couples, since our next trip will likely be for four.
This is a very nice apartment that occupies part of the ground level and the first level above ground. The front of the building is beautiful and bustling Commonwealth Ave., just a block off of the attractions of Newbury St. This apartment is in the back of the building, overlooking a classic Boston public alley that's absolutely silent at night.
The apartment is as pictured here, larger than we expected, with everything you need -- full kitchen, washer/dryer, 1.5 baths, lots of seating, and a nice dining area in the bay window. There's access to either floor from outside. Once inside the apartment, there's a circular staircase that connects the two floors, which could be an issue for someone with limited mobility. There is a standard (non-circular) staircase that can get you to either floor, which requires going into the common area. The hostess was excellent, meeting us at check-in and showing us around, and was available by phone for the one minor issue we had (burned out bulb that left the bathroom dark, promptly remedied by me once she told me where the spare bulbs were). I will definitely stay here the next time I'm in Boston for a week.
This is a beautiful , old and historic townhouse (brownstone) in the heart of the Back Bay of Boston. It is located on Commonwealth Avenue..a few blocks from Boston Commons. You can walk just about everywhere....and it is a mere few blocks to a T station. Just 1 block away is Newbury Street...packed with coffee shops, great restaurants, as well as a lot of variety in shopping..to fit most budgets!
Therese met us at the door, as promised. She did a quick tour of her home, pointing things out and explaining how to operate the TV, etc. She was responsive to our texts with our questions as to how to do this or that....A suggestion would be to have more detail in the "House Rules": how to turn on the power for the dishwasher, directions to operate the stove burners (the markings for HI, Med, simmer, etc. were worn off!!
It worked, but a guessing game ! None of it a big deal...just save some questions for her. Also , Therese mentioned a few restaurants and grocery stores...which was great! However, it would have been really really helpful to have had the information written in the "House Rules" with names and addresses for a reference. STAR market is stellar!! A good walk away , but worth it. Trader Joes is nearby. There is a spiral staircase to the ground floor , which is the bedroom. It is narrow and steep...depending on your agility and width ....it could present a problem.
Perfect location for the luxury of selling off the car, living somewhere you can walk to anything and everything.
The house is beautiful, clean and comfortable, and the host is welcoming, respectful and extremely helpful.
Boston’s engaging Back Bay was made even more special by being able to enjoy it from 116 Comm Ave. Not only a lovely private and quiet space, but accessible to all the Back Bay has to offer. Highly recommended.
What a beautiful home! Terrific kitchen. Quiet. Beautiful high ceilings and lots of light. Excellent location. The owner was terrific and easy to communicate with and eager to help. I would definitely stay here again:)
High ceilings, bay window, tasteful furnishing --Ms Byrne's house was a perfect setting for a long stay in one of Boston's most beautiful streets. The historical buildings of Commonwealth avenue are close to Boston Commons, a wonderful park, and to Newbury St, a charming street full of restaurants and shops. The appartment has all conveniences, no noise at all, and with 2 bathrooms and plenty of space. Couldn't be better. Ms. Byrne is a very kind and cheerful host.

Perfect location
We enjoyed our stay very much and would gladly stay again, however there were a few downsides. It was unusually chilly this spring and the heater was off for 9 of the 10 days we stayed. Also there is only one bathroom and it is down the spiral stairs.
The upside was the roominess and the location, which was perfect for taking the "T" to explore all of Boston.

Marathon
I very much loved the location for our day during the Boston marathon. I brought my parents Long and it was great to have an easy walk to the finish line for them. They also very much appreciated in the morning our host meeting us at the door when we arrived. It helped them feel at ease to be shown around the place. It also was a very quiet place and even though I had a pull out couch to sleep on, it was surprisingly comfortable. I only wish I would’ve brought my facemask as the windows didn’t have shades at night but it really wasn’t as much of a problem as I thought! Our host was always available I Phone if needed so we never felt there was a problem!

Excellent All Around.
The condo itself, the location, and the owner are all top shelf.
The owner is very welcoming and personable.
The large , beautiful condo is two levels with the large living room w high ceilings (with pull out sofa) , eating nook in front of bay window, half bath, and full kitchen on main floor. Downstairs is a large bedroom, office, and full bath. Also just off the bedroom is a convenient outdoor patio. Everything you need is there at the condo (ie sheets, coffee maker, iron/ironing board etc etc)
Location is perfect on comm ave 3 blocks from the public garden, two streets from the esplanade, Newbury is right there out the back. Can enter building from front on comm or from the alley.
We were very comfortable there and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. (We were there for ten days).

Perfect for Two + Teenager/Young Adult
This was perfect for us. Plenty of space for three, clean, complete kitchen, living areas, bedroom, baths and laundry. Comfortable beds. Crazy quiet for the center of the city. Boston Commons 7 minute walk, Charles River 6 minutes, metro 2 minutes, Boston Marathon finish line almost 4 minutes, shopping and restaurants - everywhere. We could go out for the day and return for a good rest then repeat. Owner most pleasant and professional and left nothing to chance or our worry; even the neighbors welcomed us! If I have failed to review an area, you should assume that it was still part of our perfect stay. Best price for accommodation that we have had in eight Boston trips over the past ten years. We hope to repeat.

Not What We Expected
My wife and I were scheduled to stay at this property beginning September 21st through October 1, 2017. We left (4) days early due to the following reasons: 1) Stifling heat in the unit due to very minimal A/C and no window coverings on Western windows. These windows that looked onto the alley are the only windows in the unit. This also provided no privacy from the apartments directly across the alley. 2) The only bed was only a Double, not a Queen. 3) No room in any of the closets for our belongings. 4) The kitchen was sparsely equipped and the oven had been left with a cookie sheet with burnt aluminum foil prior to our stay. 5) The commodes were loose at their base or seat. 6) The bathroom sink needed to be repaired or replaced. 7) The shower tiled walls appeared to have considerable mildew. 8) The very extensive personal items and family photos throughout were a constant reminder that this was the owner's home full time and not primarily a VRBO.
By contrast, we had friends from Seattle staying in a comparatively priced VRBO near us that had none of the above problems.
The only thing that we found to be favorable is the location of the building in Boston's Back Bay.
The owner was made aware of some of our reasons for leaving early but we were not reimbursed for the (4) days that we did not occupy the apartment even though we suggested to the owner that this would be the fair thing to do.

Lovely brownstone in a great location !
The property was exactly as we had expected it to be. Thérèse had stayed up to meet and show us around, despite our arriving into Boston rather late into the night. The brownstone was well kept, with a large foyer that leads into a spacious drawing room with large windows. The kitchen was well stocked with a coffee machine, oven, dishwasher. The washer and dryer (common) were an added bonus. Proximity to Newbury Street, with its shops and restaurants was great. Would love to stay again some day !

About the host
Hosted by Therese Byrne
I'm very cordial and responsive to questions and needs. Reachable during the stay. Hear to greet you when you arrive and give you a lay of the land, keys, etc.
Why they chose this property
The character, Victorian brownstone architecture and history of Back Bay drew me to this neighborhood (similar to where I had lived in Manhattan), this distinguished brownstone and elegant, spacious duplex condo.
What makes this property unique
Back Bay -- considered one of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century urban design in the United States — is in the heart of Boston. Commonwealth Avenue, Boston’s grand parkway, just blocks to the beautiful Charles River Esplanade and activities (boating, concerts, running, biking), Public Gardens (first botanical garden and swan boats), chic shopping and cafes along newbury as well as historical sites and architecture. Take a sail or an amfibious Duckboat ride around historic Boston, North End, Charlestown. Walk the Freedom Trail. Walk or take the T to take in a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or go to the Waterfront to tour and dine waterside. Enjoy the best Boston has to offer like the locals, without a car.
