This place was magical. Lovely cottage with nice decor and great outdoor space. The beach is right there and we got it to ourselves most of the day. Would come back for sure!
Our multi generation family and dog enjoyed this property for a fall getaway. We didn’t need to contact host for anything. A nice attention to detail was the bag of local coffee shop coffee supplied.
This property was so clean and so adorably decorated. The large group areas like the very large kitchen table were perfect for us. All of that was great, but the view was breathtaking over everything else. We had a wonderful stay!
What a great location and great set up. We had young kids, middle age, and seniors staying and found the cottage accommodated for all. Very enjoyable stay and easily accessible to all amenities like grocery, bar, restaurants and sightseeing.
We enjoyed our stay very much! The location was awesome and we were able to have an outside gathering for team mates that did the XC ski race that day. We will be back in the summer!
Our extended family of 11 (including kids, grandkids, and parents) stayed here for a week at the end of August for our annual rock hunting / beach relaxing vacation. We could not have asked for a better vacation. Easy to understand check in instructions, great location, and the beach was awesome. There was plenty of room for our 11 people and a roomy back deck with propane fire pit for nightly relaxing session. The house was in great condition and it had everything we needed already there including air fryer, toaster, microwave, etc..I talked with Philip the manager/owner a couple of times and he couldn't have been nicer. The beach had great access for our older guests, and the kids enjoyed the miles of beach in each direction to look for those rock treasures. The kids also enjoyed boogie boarding, swimming, and snorkeling. We took advantage of the free kayaks and paddleboards that were offered. I'm off now to re-book this house for next year. If you are on the fence about renting, book now, you won't regret it.
If you are looking for a secluded getaway with direct access to Lake Superior's majestic shoreline, time with family spent in an accommodating kitchen and cozying up to gaze at a cozy fireplace -- this is the place for you. We were able to gather our whole family for dinner - 14 people at the kitchen table -- such a nice blessing as we all congregated from different states.
North Shore Cottages are located on a private beach on Lake Superior. Beautiful sunsets, rises and if your lucky,
northern lights. Cottage and grounds filled with family fun house games yard games, boating, kayaking, with lots to do close by. Rock hunting, waterfalls, hiking, museums, shopping. Fun for whole family all week. Our second time there can't wait to go back again.
The entire family from our 1 year old granddaughter all the way to my 72 year old husband loved the cottage and location. Quiet, beautiful view of Lake Superior and fantastic rock hunting. Close enough for short day trips to Copper Harbor to Houghton. Would love the owners to include some history on the McNaughton Cottage. Great time. Would highly recommend.
We stayed with 2 other families for a ski camp and all agreed that it was great! There was plenty of space for all. The house great gathering space with an amazing view...plus there’s a sauna! We did have an issue come up with the heating system. Philip was immediately responsive and it all worked out. We hope to be back!
The home was very beautiful , spacious and clean. Our family of 5 only used the main level and had plenty of space. The views of Lake Superior were absolutely stunning. Communication with Phillip was outstanding-he responded very quickly to all questions. We managed to lock ourselves out of the home and also came over very quickly with a smile and spare key. Highly recommended home!
The location of this rental could not be much better. Views from the house and deck were spectacular and walking along the shore each day was a treat. Two areas to review: We definitely could have used more dinner plates as there there only 7 and some nights we needed plates for serving as well at dinner. Upstairs bedroom door would not stay closed, had to wedge a washcloth in the door jam to keep it closed.
We loved our stay at MacNaughton's Retreat. The house is exactly as the pictures and very comfortable! Amazing views of Lake Superior and great location on the peninsula as a jumping off point for exploring. Cottages are grouped together to create a little village of sorts but spaced far enough apart with walls and landscaping to allow privacy. Phillip and Sara are very welcoming and responsive for any questions you might have. Super close to Calumet for groceries, etc. but far enough away to feel remote. Perfect getaway for Labour Day weekend and we will certainly be back!
We had a mini reunion with my siblings to inter our parents’ ashes. We were supposed to do it in 2020 but had to cancel due to Covid-19. My daughter and her family and my husband and I stayed in this cottage. It was perfect for our family! All of the kids got to have their own bedroom, which they were delighted about! It had everything we needed. Plenty of room at the kitchen table for my whole family. The deck was big enough for all of us to be together. We had a wonderful time and would definitely come back again!
Our family very much enjoyed our time here! Plenty of space both inside and out for our small family to play and have their time to themselves as well. We loved the close proximity of the lake/rock beach. The only thing to note is while there is AC in the house, it is a wall unit on the main level. If you have people sleeping upstairs (which we did not), it might get a little hotter up there. Normally this is not a problem as it doesn't get that hot along the shore anyway...we just happened to have a couple of hotter days during our stay. Over-all...mutliple family members have requested that we come back to this same spot next year!

Incredible beach location
Our group of 10 enjoyed the private beach and proximity to activities in the Keweenaw peninsula. The house was tight for 10, and wasn't really setup for more than 6. It would be good to have place settings and seating to accommodate everyone in the group. The house could use some TLC - a thorough cleaning, repairs to doors and windows, paint, and furniture. It was not clear that the outdoor space is shared with several other rentals - though the other guests were great, and it wasn't a problem. A toilet in an unfinished stone basement with steep stairs and no handrail is generally not considered a "bathroom," this is a two bath house. The owner promptly provided missing bedding and towels. The sunsets on the beach were amazing.

HA! Most of this is a lie... This entitled guest's ego was bruised when reminded of firework laws on July 5 and after trying to force a lock to a private garage that he assumed should be available to him despite no mention in the listing. As far as seating and place settings, the dinning table (also pictured in the listing) seats 10 as well as an additional table on the patio with another 8 seats plus folding table available with additional seating to accommodate 20 or more total. This historical 120 year old home has been very well maintained over the years however we apologize if you found a peel of paint. Had that bothered you so bad I would have appreciated hearing about it from you so I could paint it for the next guest to avoid such criticism and ruin their vacation too. Clearly with renters who force locks you can imagine I have minor repairs that pop up all the time. If you find something, say something. Don't be that guy and stay silent until review time. Trust that it would not be in my own business interest to let things fall to pieces as this guest portrays and I'm sure my star rating would reflect that. As far as it being clean is such a stretch and you can read every other review of how clean our staff prepares the home for guests. There is also no shared space as you have your own yard in front facing the lake and the back yard of the house. Your budget could not afford you the privacy on Lake Superior you expected as it is not even a thing... 10 feet from the high water mark is public everywhere on Lake Superior and we have no neighbors (besides my other couple of rentals at this beach) for miles of undeveloped private beach. It really doesn't get more private with most vacation rentals in the Keweenaw having many neighbors or in lakeside communities. You did not rent the whole of Lake Superior, so ridiculous to think that at the low competitive rate you paid and for what you got. On to the basement half bath... again it is a 120 year old historical home and back then they didn't build finished "man cave" basements so the half bath off of the basement laundry room is listed exactly as that, a room, toilet and a sink. To imply I'm putting false information on my listing is rude but you are sad to lie about the effort put in before and during your stay by the housekeeping staff. Next vacation take a deep breath and remember just because you assume something does not make it law or how it is. If you are corrected, don't get upset and move on.

Lake Superior
Beautiful sunsets, nice flat lawn for games, nice deck, well-equipped kitchen. Beach access was good, fire pit was great. Local brewery in Calumet nearby was excellent (I think it was called Michigan Pub). It was very hot and windows would not open (many without screens); many non-working lightbulbs (in fairness, we did not contact owner to request any). Was not clear from description that there are cottages right behind and adjacent to this one and beach is shared. Also, 3rd bathroom is in unfinished basement (we did not use, though we appreciated the use of laundry down there). We were fortunate to have quiet neighbors but our peaceful retreat could have been much different. We contacted owner x2 prior to trip with question about internet connectivity and received no reply.
What an amazing location on the shores of Lake Superior. We loved our spot on the shoreline and were happy to find Yooperlites each evening. The firepit on the deck provided two nights of pure Michigan fun! My parents, grandmother, sister, nephew, and kids enjoyed the perfect weekend in this ideal home. We all traveled North to celebrate my oldest son's graduation from Michigan Tech. The house was clean and with 5 bedrooms, had all the space we needed. We ate breakfast each morning enjoying the sound of Lake Superior waves. We found great lunch options in Calumet and enjoyed takeout pizza from Calumet Works, a delicious dinner at Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub, and a graduation celebration dinner at Carmelitas, complete with thimbleberry margaritas. Delicious UP coffee was provided along with many other fun delights. The MTU colored and themed flowers on the table were the very best surprise! The owners are caring and the sweet message they left for us was heartfelt. Everything they did and provided only added to our celebration. We truly do hope to venture back often and with our second son starting at MTU in the fall, I'm certain we'll be back!
