About this property
Long River House
About this space
Brand new house on 17 acres overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. An open concept post and beam home with a loft and deck, modern kitchen, and convenient access to multiple ski areas, Putney Mountain, the West River Trail, and restaurants and shopping in Putney and Brattleboro. Guests have access to the whole house and yard.
The space
This newly built, solar-powered house is a beautiful post-and-beam home with wonderful light and views situated on 17 acres of old farmland. There are three bedrooms—a master bedroom with a queen bed and en suite bathroom with a bathtub on the ground floor and two bedrooms (one with a queen bed and one with two twins) upstairs with a shared bathroom (also with a tub). A pull-out queen sofa bed is available in the adjacent loft. The house features a fully appointed kitchen, a great room, picture windows and a deck overlooking the Connecticut River, a powder room, radiant heat, a whole-house air exchange system, a mini-split cooling system, and laundry facilities. The property boasts a stream and fruit trees, and is easily accessed from I-95 and Route 5.
Guest access
You have use of the whole house except the utility room and closet under the stairs.
Other things to note
Groceries
The Putney General Store is an 8-minute drive from the house and has basic staples as well as prepared foods, pastries, and coffee. Two minutes farther south is the Putney Co-Op which has a larger selection of groceries as well as prepared foods and an outdoor eating area with picnic tables. Allen Brothers Farm Market, 7 minutes north in Westminster, also has basic stables, and the Harlow Farm Stand 1 minute beyond it carries farm-fresh vegetables. The closest large grocery store is Hannaford, 18 minutes away in Brattleboro, and Brattleboro also has the Brattleboro Food Co-Op and a summer farmer’s market.
Restaurants
The Putney Diner, 6 miles away, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and uses lots of local produce and products in their food. Brattleboro has several restaurants, including Echo, Amys Bakery and Café, Peter Havens, the Marina Restaurant, and TJ Buckleys. Yalla serves excellent falafels and pitas, The Works has great bagels and other lunch options, and Panda north and Panasian serve Asian food.
There are many other restaurants across the river in Keane, New Hampshire. Little Zoe’s Pizza serves spectacular wood over-fired pizza to eat or bring back and bake.
Hiking, Outdoor Activities, Music
Putney Mountain is a lovely nearby hike. Black Mountain in Dummerston is another great, relatively short hike that is not too far. The West River Trail along the West River can be accessed behind the Marina Restaurant in Brattleboro and is an easy walk. On the other side of the Connecticut River from Brattleboro is Wantastuquet Mountain. Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro also has lots of hiking trails.
Vermont Canoe Touring Center rents kayaks or canoes for paddling down the Connecticut River or around the Meadows. Living Memorial Park has a public pool, a public skate park, and, in winter, a skating rink. Mount Snow and Magic Mountain are the closet ski areas, and Stratton Mountain and others are also easy to get to.
In season, pick your own blueberries at Harlows Sugar House or Green Mountain Orchards, strawberries at Harlows Farm Stand, and blueberries and apples at Green Mountain orchards.
The Retreat Farm holds The Food Truck Roundup on Thursdays from 5-8 pm during the summers with live music and food trucks. Many local venues such as the Next Stage Arts Center in Putney and the Stone Church in Brattleboro have music events, and Brattleboro holds an Art Walk on the first Friday of the month from May through October with live music, food trucks, and other attractions.
