Thank you so much for staying with us in the Wise Old Hunter Lodge. It was wonderful having you as our guests.
We only got to stay one night but it was perfect for our group of 5. The back deck is great for relaxing with a cold one after a day of sightseeing. The beds are comfy and the kitchen well stocked!

Thank you for staying with us. Hope to see you again soon, and that your schedule will then allow you to stay longer and enjoy our unique property. John
This cabin was in a great location for all our day plans in Homer. 4 of us stayed in the cabinet, but we had 4 other friends over in the evenings for dinner. The space was comfortable and the deck was an added entertaining space that we loved.

Thank you for staying with us and glad you enjoyed the Wise Old Hunter Lodge.
This was a great location for everything we wanted to do on the peninsula. We traveled to Homer a few dates and then to Seward. The cabin was rustic and had the feel of “true Alaskan Wilderness”

Thank you for staying with us in the Wise Old Hunter Lodge.
What sets the the Old Wise Hunter Cabin apart from the ubiquitous cabin rental is the owner and builder's attention to detail. The cabin has an eclectic interior with stuffed animals as well as the stories of their hunt all nicely narrated in the cabin's manual. The cabin is also filled with everything you need for a few days stay, including coffee, teas, snacks, as well as a very nice laundry machine and dryer. We had 8 people stay there and we really loved the experience.

Thank you so much for the kind comments. It is wonderful to have guests express their sincere appreciation of our homes and of our style. Hope to see you back soon. John
Beautiful cabin with absolutely everything we needed and then some. We stayed as a family of 7. We only stayed for the weekend so we made the most of it . On the way to the cabin, we fished the Kenai river for silvers. Grandkids had a blast. The next day we spent most of our time in Homer, eating and shopping. We also did some fishing in Homer, but not much luck.

Thank you for staying with us and glad the internet speed wasn't a significant problem for you. We do have the best ACS has to offer.
We loved our stay at Wise Old Hunter Cabin. It is a beautiful log cabin about 20 minutes outside of Homer. Filled with the owners taxidermy which we loved but others might not. Has a great deck with a bar and grill to rest on after a long day. John was great to deal with and helped us book our fishing trip and an ATV tour. Only feedback I would share is that they have a water softening system that goes off whenever any water is used. It is VERY loud to the point that it woke us all up. Outside of that the cabin was really great and I would stay here again.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. The Alaska mounts there in the Wise Old Hunter Lodge are a big favorite of our guests. Some travelers may choose not to stay in the Lodge because of the display of Alaska wildlife, and we respect that. Regarding the water system, the injection pump on the water system operates for a few seconds (3 or 4 strokes) when water is being used, such as for bathing or flushing. The sound can be minimized by keeping the door to the water room closed. But we appreciate this comment and we will adjust or add more soundproofing as an additional measure. John
Cool place--been to his property before, would not hesitate to return
Overall, very cool place. Simple. Clean. Everything worked.
There are always little things with places like these--but its all part of the charm. Only thing that brought down the rating to a 4 star instead of 5 was the water heater/expansion tank (we assume) made a very loud knocking noise about every 5 minutes...24 hours a day. So if you are a light sleeper--you'll hate it.
Otherwise, cool place. Alaska is always fun

Thank you for staying with us and happy that you enjoyed your stay.
The clicking noise that you heard from the utility room was likely the injection pump which adds a small amount of chlorinated water to the well water. Normally, this generates a very low-level sound or click. The pump only operates when water is being used, so it should be quiet during sleeping hours. If that pump was running 24 hours a day, it indicates water was left running somewhere in the house, which of course is wasteful and is to be avoided. We are on the property, and we would have very much like to have known of the described situation. We didn't find any water leaks and the pump was not running and all was quiet after your check out.
When the water treatment system regenerates, which happens every 3 days and lasts about 20 minutes, the injection pump operates frequently. Perhaps this is the sound referred to - but it lasts only 20 minutes and is a very low-level sound. There is sound insulation around the pump and another good measure is to close the door to utility room at night. But thank you for the comment. We will look at modifying the regeneration cycle timing so to minimize the occurrence of regenerations during guests’ occupancies.
We enjoyed staying at the cabin. We had everything we needed and the washer and dryer was a lifesaver after being in Alaska so long. We were able to relax, cook and play cards with plenty of comfort to stretch out and enjoy the accommodations.

Glad you enjoyed your stay in the Wise Old Hunter Lodge. It was great having you as our guests. John
This was a beautifully crafted log cabin that was well appointed and had great resources. The binder of information was very appreciated. It was fantastic to be able to speak to John who grew up in the cabin and gave more history to the Bear Paw development. The location in anchor point was perfect for our fishing trip in Ninilchik and visit to Homer.
Thanks John

Old Wise Hunter lodge
We were lucky to find this amazing place to rent for the week in July 2016. The cabin was just perfect! We had never been to Alaska and planned the whole trip on our own so that we were able to do what we wanted. We went to Homer and went out fishing with Falcon Charters Captain Tony and had a blast. We did meet John Ogle and his wife that were both very nice! Alaska is a trip of a lifetime and so blessed our trip was perfect! Thank you John! Hope to be back to see you again soon! Log cabin lots of charm and warmth
What a wonderful place to stay! Lots of room for a large group or seclusion for a romantic getaway. Close to Homer and the Kenai Peninsula. The deck and covered BBQ were great gathering places. The owner was very accommodating even when we had to cancel and re-schedule. Could not wait to show pictures to friends of the wonderful place we found at the Wise Old Hunter.

Bear Paw Adventure is a family owned and operated lodging and adventure service. Your host, John lives on the property and he is at your services during your stay. John has lived in Alaska since 1984, has operated both commercial and sports fishing services, has extensive experience in the Alaska outdoors, and is a great Alaska adventures resource for guests. Reservations for Bear Paw adventure are managed by John, SR from the Bear Paw Adventure reservation office in Texas. In addition to operating Bear Paw Adventure, the family has interests & hobbies that include hunting & fishing, camping, hiking, boating, wildlife viewing, birding, gardening, log work (both log building construction and log furniture making), photography, geology, the environment, hunting for gold, snowmobiling, traveling Alaska, art, collecting (coins, rocks, stamps, fossils, etc), Alaska Native culture, and just about anything else associated with the outdoors or Alaska. Bear Paw Adventure engages in environmentally conscious cleaning practices and is a member of Adventure Green Alaska.
Why they chose this property
Bear Paw Adventure’s unique log buildings are situated on 14+ acres of an old homestead site. This use of the property is the first since the homestead days. We have attempted to keep the site, to the extent practical, as we found it. Evidence of the homestead activities can still be seen on the land. The slope of the land protects the property, to some extent, from the brisk winds off Cook Inlet. It is a nearly wild site with lots of spruce trees, alders and wildflower and a great place to watch for moose, eagles, ravens and other wildlife.
What makes this property unique
The 14+ acre property offers are a great sample of real rural Alaska and the full-scribed log buildings with their Alaskan décor provide interesting and comfortable one-of-a-kind lodging. The busy tourism centers in nearby communities are within easy reach so that guests can enjoy those activities and then retreat their own private Alaska at Bear Paw Adventure. For those who come to Alaska to enjoy nature, this is the place to stay.
