Gardeners Cottage in the grounds of Newstead Abbey- home of the Poet Lord Byron
Stay in our Gardener’s Cottage at Newstead Abbey and you’ll be walking in the footsteps of the classical romantic Poet, Byron and enjoying the same stunning park vistas and surrounding countryside that truly inspired him.
Built in the 1860s by the Webb family, the Gardener’s Cottage is situated in heart of the Abbey grounds and is just a few minutes’ walk from many of the parks’ unique features, including the Abbey, Byron’s own Fort and stunning lakes.
Nestled amongst mature trees and shrubs and overlooking the original Rose Garden, this charming Grade II listed building has been sensitively restored to a very high standard, whilst still retaining some of the building’s original features, including wooden floorboards, floor tiles and beautiful stone mullion windows. The interior design has been influenced by rooms in the House and Abbey, which are also well worth a visit during your stay.
The cottage sleeps up to 4 people and has two bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and the other with two single beds. Off the landing there is a family bathroom with bath and separate “drench” shower cubicle.
Downstairs is a fully equipped kitchen with all modern amenities with a utility room housing a washer/dryer, along with a comfortable lounge and separate dining room. Accessed from the kitchen is your very own private walled courtyard, just perfect for an alfresco breakfast or relaxing with a glass of wine after a busy day sightseeing.
The cottage is available for week long, weekend and mid-week breaks and is perfect for exploring the wealth of history and culture that the Robin Hood’s county has to offer and is also available to hire for pre and post ceremony accommodation for our happy couples who marry at the Abbey.

It's was a very cute quiet cottage. Well stocked kitchen and very helpful staff. The only thing that would have made it better would be Wi-Fi. Highly recommend
The cottage is delightful. No problems with the kitchen, bedrooms, heating, access or TV. It would be hard to find a more beautiful setting enclosed amongst the trees, surrounded by parkland and gardens that are yours alone after 5 pm

What a magical experience to stay on the grounds of Newstead Abbey! Gorgeous property all to yourself after hours, with loads of birds and natural beauty. The cottage is clean and comfortable, very quiet and relaxing. You will need a car. I hope to stay here again!

Wedding weekend
Newstead Abbey is beautiful. Instructions to get to the property were very confusing, sent different directions to bridal party. The mould in fridge door (cleaned myself) and dust didnt put us off from having a really special few days celebrating our wedding

We were unaware of the issues you mention and wish you had brought it up during your stay. We will be checking any issues with our Housekeeping staff. We have a rigorous cleaning schedule and the Cottage is cleaned before each guests rental.
The Directions issued by Vrbo are given directly to the client, so we are unsure how they were unclear to other guests as we are not responsible for passing these on...
Good to hear that the wedding went well.

Thanks for staying with us Brian.
Vrbo automatically sends out the self check-in information, so we don't know why you didn't receive it, as we've had no other issue with this.
We will check the website settings though, to make sure other guests are well informed.
Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay otherwise.
Tempted not to leave a review, as this place was so lovely I'd quite like to keep it to myself. Isolated deep inside the wonderful Newstead Abbey grounds, it was utterly fabulous. The listing doesn't do it justice.
There were only two of us, with the rest of the family visiting one day, but you could easily have a family of four. Very well equipped, and with the lovely enclosed patio which is quite the sun trap, and with a bbq. Great to have the separate living room and dining room. Everything worked seamlessly. We had a long weekend and had wondered about visiting Sherwood Forest or Papplewick Pumping Station, but in the end we never left the grounds!

A unique opportunity for our family of three to stay in a remote cottage in the grounds of an Abbey . The cottage was beautiful, bigger than it looked in the pictures. It was very clean and had everything we needed for a two nights stay over New Year. It was nice to walk around the grounds at our leisure and to tour the Abbey for free. A few visitors to the Abbey/ grounds did walk close to the cottage front door but not close enough to look in, they were respectful and didn't intrude on our space.
All the staff we met were really nice and helpful.
A little hard to find in the dark on arrival although clear directions were provided but we couldn't get service on our phone to read them! Wifi in the actual cottage was better upstairs but it wasn't a problem not being glued to our phones.
We would love to return.

beautiful little place
as a fan of one Lord Byron I was excited to stay here. the staff at the museum and the surrounding neighbors were so helpful, and thank goodness for that! as someone who came by cab and unfortunately arrived later than planned because both trains I took to get there arrived late - finding the keys after a 20 minute walk from the front gate to the Abbey was nearly impossible! first of all the check-in instructions have no code for the main gate in order to access the grounds. So it is impossible to access the cottage itself, I was literally told by neighbors to jump the gate! Thankfully, the warden Tracy, was around and was able to help me, and I didn’t have to jump anything. However, the instructions to getting the keys from the lockbox are near impossible to understand. I would ask the people in charge of this listing to be more specific and not just say “parking area.” when it comes to finding the lockbox – as there are exactly 3 different parking lots. Simply saying something along the lines of the parking area at the cottage would’ve cleared up things immeasurably. Instead, I was left wandering around with my suitcase in the blazing heat.If it wasn’t for the friendly neighbors, I would’ve ended up sleeping under an oak tree. I would also suggest giving anyone who rents this cottage not just the key code, but also the code to opening the gate. I cannot imagine what would happen! besides that, I had a wonderful time! and kudos to the staff being so lovely and helpful.

Beautiful grounds
The property was situated in beautiful grounds, but the actual property was far from what was advertised. There were a few issues and the major one was the leaking toilet and the shower where you could not really take a shower for longer than 10 seconds. It would go scorching hot and then cold within a few seconds. We also arrived on time but the people who were supposed to get the property ready were not made aware of us coming. We had to wait for over 45 minutes to get into the property and even then, it wasn't ready. We left the property cleaner than we found it.
On a positive note, the grounds the property was on were really lovely. The staff that worked at the Abbey were really nice as well. We were given so many different directions on how to get to the property, it was really confusing. One staff member told us to go down a road that took us into other people's properties and another staff member told us we couldn't drive down to the actual cottage and had to walk and carry our cases to the property.
That wasn't correct, obviously, and we were glad we didn't listen to that advice.
It was a bit of a let-down with the cleanliness and the hot water issue. If this was fixed, the property would be amazing. The price we paid for what we got was a bit too much. I would really look around for other properties and go and visit the grounds separately without having to stay there.

Hi Thankyou for your review.
All issues with heating, hot water , were down to the boiler, which has now been fixed.
We apologise for the delay in getting you access to the Cottage on your arrival, which we put down to your late minute booking, which caught us on the hop.
We have now put protocols into practice to ensure this doesn't happen again.
We hope you received the access information, which is automatically sent before your visit by Vrbo, which should have confirmed directions, access codes etc.
Hopefully you will have confidence in visiting again, as we have remedied the issues you had.
It was a real privilege to be able to stay in the grounds of Newstead Abbey. Access to the gardens and house was quick and easy and all of the on site staff were super friendly. We had a relaxed and enjoyable time. Enough literature for adults to read and board games for children.
The negatives: no response from the house manager until we contacted VRBO directly. House was cold when we arrived after a very wet drive - it doesn’t take much to ensure a warm cottage for arrivals. We had to adjust the boiler temperature and the radiators ourselves to get warm. Don’t bother to bath - the boiler is unreliable and the water runs hot very briefly, and more often it is cold. We had luke warm showers each day.
The kitchen, although well-stocked, has no space to prepare food - it needs a console table to do so. The flat roof to the scullery leaked in the rain.
The man double bed was very hard, but the bed linen was super.
On a personal note, I do think that NCC have missed a trick here. The decor is modern and fairly cheap. Although the gardener would not have lived salubriously, there is so much reasonably priced period furniture about, that furniture could well be acquired to suit the correct period of the cottage.
No wi- fi or mobile signal, which was useful if you wanted to read, but no use if you wanted to share the fabulous photos on social media!

Thankyou for your review.
All the issues with heating, boiler etc have been resolved now, so we are sorry these fell below your expectations.
We value your objective opinions and will discuss some of the other observations you have made.
The location is amazing; beautiful slightly wild gardens, shimmering lakes, abundant wildlife, quiet corners, lush vegetation and majestic ancient trees. The cottage is delightful; warm, welcoming, immaculately clean, comfortably furnished and sympathetically refurbished. The enclosed courtyard afforded a sheltered spot to enjoy coffee and company.

Gardener's Cottage is a very special and a truly unique place. Set in the grounds of a former Abbey, which is steeped in history. When the grounds close at 5 o'clock, you are left alone on the estate with the rabbits, squirrels, swans and peacocks. Be prepared to never want to leave the grounds, unless it is just so that you can enjoy driving back in. There is no wi-fi, but we got decent mobile signal within 20 yards of the front door. I feel lucky to have had the chance to stay there. We are planning when we can go back.

Our little break was everything we could have wished for, and more. The setting was stunning with a 'wow' around every turn through the gardens and woodland. We left with the feeling that we must return. Thank you for this opportunity to comment as we didn't find a guest book. Each and every member of staff we encountered was so friendly and helpful.

We stayed for three peaceful nights in the beautiful Gardener's cottage. Coming from the U.S., it was so relaxing to hear the sheep at night and stroll in the breathtaking gardens. My two teenage daughters bought duck food from the gift shop and we sat by the pond and fed some baby swans along with Mom and Dad! We walked side-by-side with the most beautiful peacocks I've ever seen and even caught a glimpse of a Mother and baby! Our stay at Newstead will be a treasure for our family and my only regret would be that we didn't stay longer!
