About this property

Luxe Vintage Captain’s Quarters Suite Steps From Historic Old Charlottetown

*Please Note Our Captain's Quarters Suite Is Available For Stays Of 28 Days Or Longer*

Located centrally, just steps from the heart of old Charlottetown, our legal luxury triplex is a former traditional centre-hall shingled house (originally built circa 1880) nestled on a professionally designed recently landscaped lot gently shaded by a stately century-old white ash tree.

Situated on the second level, with its original centre hall private entrance opening formally to the street, our 'Sailor's Suite' retains authentic vintage detail dating back to the late 1880s when the house was originally constructed. With the patina of old wood floors, wide baseboards, original mill-work window surrounds, beadboard trim and hand-crafted panel doors, this suite has been thoughtfully and sensitively renovated to respect the integrity of the beloved family home it once was, while offering all manner of contemporary comforts including luxury appointments and furnishings.

From the gracious foyer up the vintage staircase, the suite’s rooms radiate off the centre hall. Having a split bedroom plan, each sleeping sanctuary offers ample proportions and high ceilings, with the rear bedroom opening to a covered porch which overlooks the landscaped garden. The separate living room can be converted into a third bedroom as required, and the enchanting renovated kitchen boasts a sun-drenched balcony perfect for morning coffee or barbecuing. This endearing suite has that special patina unique to a well-loved vintage home, with all the laid-back comfort of a country-escape. That it’s within steps to the heart of Old Charlottetown makes it magical!

The property is situated on Upper Hillsborough Street, and is a brief ten-minute walk to Charlottetown Harbour, and the shops and restaurants of Water Street, Peakes Quay, Queen Street and Victoria Row. It's a few blocks to historic Great George Street and Province House, and an easy stroll to the waterfront boardwalk of 100+ acre Victoria Park with it's walking trails, sport fields, tennis courts and outdoor swimming pool. And we can't resist recommending our favorite independent coffee location, Receiver Coffee, on Water Street!

I own Upper Hillsborough with my long-time friend and business associate, Steven. We're both Realtors with Bosley Real Estate Brokerage in Toronto, Ontario. Steven, who operates his urbaneer division, has been with Bosley for many years, and myself, many fewer! We've been fast and fabulous friends since meeting while attending the University of Victoria. I'm originally from Summerland, British Columbia, having moved to Toronto in 1988 to pursue my education and my career as an orchestral musician. In the time since, I've performed with many of Canada's finest ensembles including the Toronto Symphony, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company, and played music in places as far flung and varied as Charlottetown, Hong Kong, and Edinburgh. Since 1999, I've been lucky enough to call Charlottetown home during the summer months thanks to my long involvement as a musician at the Charlottetown Festival.

Why they chose this property

12 Upper Hillsborough at time of purchase in 2008 was a true diamond-in-the-rough: solid, tons of character, and well-situated to Old Charlottetown on a wonderful street shared with many fellow artists and artisans! We fell in love with it's quirkiness, it's history, and it's outstanding potential. The Black House boasts close proximity to all the things nearby that make Charlottetown a truly wonderful place to visit. It's our hope your stay with us will be one of your most memorable!

What makes this property unique
