RENTALS FOR NEXT YEAR BEGIN OCT. 20.
PREVIOUS GUESTS GIVEN PREFERENCE.

THERE IS NO CENTRAL HEATING, MERELY FIREPLACES AND SPACE HEATERS.
MAXIMUM OF 8 GUESTS.
NO PETS.

This rustic, shingle-sided cottage is one of the last of its kind in Leland. The beach is literally out the back door and Lake Michigan is a constant presence. Nearly all the rooms, including both the dining room and the deck where we take our meals, overlook it. No matter the weather, you'll hear the waves and sometimes the wind in the surrounding pines.
With five bedrooms — three in the main house and two in "the annex" just across the deck from the main house — as many as 8 adults can sleep comfortably. There are two-and-a-half baths, with a clawfoot tub in the main house and a shower in the annex. There are canoes, kayaks, a paddleboard and bicycles for your use and we provide linen and towels, so there’s no need to bring those.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

About the host

The cottage has been in our family for four generations. A pair of great-grandparents rode here on horseback from Indiana to celebrate their honeymoon.

Why they chose this property

It's as if Pineacres has been preserved in amber. It is a rustic gem that conjures up a time when things at least seemed simpler than they are today. If your childhood included summers at a treasured lakeside cottage where the days were long and the nights were gentle, then Pineacres will rekindle those memories. And if you want your children to experience the same, then Pineacres is for them, as well.
For years our cottage has been a place to connect with family and friends, a place to while away the hours in conversation, or catch up on our reading, or play a game of cards. If you like, it can be a respite from a world of incessant demands for your attention, a respite from the world of pixels and tiny screens.
It's a place where sunlight drifts through the pines and the white birches sway in the breeze. A place where the sound of children's laughter competes with the waves rolling in on the beach. A place to gather stones and cook good meals and be present for one another.
If it's true that for everything there is a season, then the summer is for Pineacres.

What makes this property unique

It's undeniable that the cottage's location is its prime attraction. Lake Michigan in all its moods is a giant presence there. But for some visitors, the cottage's charm rivals the lake as a reason for a journey. Little has changed at Pineacres over the decades. The fieldstone fireplaces are as solid as ever. The delicate paper lanterns that hang from the living room's exposed beams have survived. There's old, wavy glass in some of the multi-paned windows and for generations the cast iron, claw foot tub has been the place for children to take their Saturday night bath.
Admittedly, the cottage is not to everyone's taste. The kitchen is well equipped but lacks a dishwasher. And the shower is perfectly fine but nowhere near luxurious.
Pineacres harkens back to when Leland's Fishtown was not a tourist attraction but a genuine fishing port; a time when the boats were made of wood and the men were made of iron, rather than the other way around, to quote an old-timer. It's the cottage's similar lack of pretension that we love.
