About this property

Huge Beautiful 2-Story Apartment in a Great Neighborhood.

Covid19 Note: This apartment is professionally cleaned and disinfected prior to each new guest check-in.

Just coming back onto the short-term rental market after a one and half year hiatus. I sold the building about a year and half ago and bought a new place a few blocks away. I have now reopened this wonderful B&B and am again taking reservations. I am still the host and property manager, and look forward to welcoming you here.

We've also recently installed a large solar array on the roof, which provides more than enough electricity for the entire building. It uses "net metering", which ensures a totally seamless electrical supply for the property at all times, regardless of how much energy our array is producing.

This very large two story apartment is truly unique. It occupies two floors, with three bedrooms and one bathroom on the second floor and a kitchen, dining room, bathroom and great room on the first floor. The great room is two stories high with an exposed wraparound staircase. The building still retains it's original hardwood maple floors, with the exception of one of the bedrooms, which is carpeted. Both floors have private 4-season porches on the front of the building. The back door leads out onto a beautiful and rather large split level cedar deck. Some off-street parking is available at the rear of the building as well.

There is one master bedroom with a king size bed, cable TV and it's own private 4-season porch. The other two bedrooms are substantially smaller and feature queen size beds.

Both bathrooms have recently been redone and feature some beautiful custom stonework and cabinetry. The kitchen received granite countertops around the same time, and features a full size refrigerator/freezer, gas range, microwave, coffee machine and toaster. It is also equipped with cookware, dishes and utensils. The apartment has it's own laundry machines, which are located off the kitchen. The dining room is immediately adjacent to the kitchen and has a private 4-season porch attached.

The great room is part of what makes this rental so unique. It has a 20 foot ceiling with an open staircase that wraps up to the second floor. It's the living room of the apartment and features comfortable seating with a large flat screen television. It also has a queen size hide-a-bed.

The apartment is equipped with free wireless high speed internet access, cable television and a dedicated forced air heating and air conditioning system with it's own thermostat that the guest has control over. (Note: this forced air system is exclusive to this B&B and is not shared with the other unit in the building.)

This rental occupies both floors of the South half of the building, and was originally two apartments, which have been converted into one extra large single unit. Guests have three private doors to the apartment: First and second floor front doors, which lead into a common stairwell shared with the other unit in the building, and a back door, which leads out onto the cedar deck.

About the host

I grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and moved to South Minneapolis when I attended the University of Minnesota. I've lived in this area ever since. It suites me. I'm what you might call an artistic type. I actually made the door in this photo. I'm a Classically trained composer and have strong ties to the arts community here. I've made a living as a composer and audio producer for over 30 years. I'm also rather "outdoorsy". I am intimately familiar with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota and have biked hundreds of miles of trails in the state. I love exploring and am always looking for new bike trails and restaurants. I also love to cook.

Why they chose this property

I chose to live in this part of town because it just feels right to me. It's old. It has character. The boulevard trees are large and mature. Great restaurants. Beautiful old parks. The lakes. The bike trails. A vibrant arts scene. Many small independent businesses. Close to everything. The building is original to the site and is over 100 years old. I like that it's large. It was originally constructed as a 5-plex and has been many things over the past century, including a rooming house. It was converted to a duplex right before I purchased it, at which time it received all new wiring, plumbing and heating/air conditioning. This neighborhood has many old large houses and mansions. Most of them had been all broken up into multiple units, but as the area gentrified, these stately old homes have gradually been bought-up and converted back to single occupancy residences. I was fortunate to have gotten in near the beginning of the gentrification upswing.

I sold the building to it's current owner in the Fall of 2019, and moved to my new home, which is located about eight blocks away. So, I'm still in the neighborhood and close by if there is anything your require.

What makes this property unique

Close to Downtown. Close to Uptown. Close to the Lakes. It hits the sweet spot. People throw around the word "unique" pretty loosely, but this property truly does earn that description. Just ask any appraiser I've had look at the property. They can never find comparables to include in their appraisals. That uniqueness is part of what attracted me to the property. Though it is conventional in many respects, it's size and layout do make it stand out – particularly the large two-story great rooms in both units. If I had to choose one attribute of this building that really made me want to acquire it, other than the neighborhood itself, it would be the great rooms. They are not original to the house. They were created by removing the second floor and some of the interior walls in the back part of the building. It's a rather striking effect.
