We were in town for a wedding and this house was perfect for our group of friends. Each room is very well appointed and beautifully decorated. The location is perfect for getting in and out of town. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
We stayed in this house for two weeks and really enjoyed it. It was well furnished, clean, close to town, a beautiful street and the perfect place for our family to spend our time. Our local contact was easy to reach and was very helpful. Can’t wait to come back!
Had a great time! House is right down the road from Damariscotta. Plenty of places to eat and shop within walking distance. Beach and lighthouse only 20 minutes away.
House is stunning and very uniqiue. It has plenty of charm.
We enjoyed our stay at the Captain’s House. It’s quaint and quirky. It was clean and comfortable. We were able to easily walk into Damariscotta for the pumpkin festival and other local sights. There’s a fantastic playground near the local Y and Great Salt Bay community school that’s worth the visit if you are traveling with kids. When we were in the house, it was cozy to hang out near the kitchen and living room combo
Nice stay, plenty of room for everyone. The house was nice. There are quirks, like the layout and floors that are a little uneven, but that's expected in an older home. The hot water faucet in the upstairs bathroom should be looked at as it was lose. Overall we were very happy and would stay again.
We had a very nice and comfortable stay this past weekend. The house was ready and inviting fir when we arrived. The house was huge! Definitely enough space for everyone to spread out! Thank you!
We were attending a family event in Damariscotta and this home was perfect for our visit. On a beautiful, quiet street and and walking distance to downtown. Also close to other great midcoast Maine destinations like Camden, Pemaquid and Harpswell. The house is cozy with plenty of room and a very historic feel. The beds were comfortable and the wifi good, so no complaints from our a youg adult childern.
Wonderful location - easy to walk to restaurants and quaint shops. Large home with 5 full/queen beds and at least a few new mattresses - very comfortable. No central air - window units in most bedrooms.
Our group of six friends came up from Massachusetts for Pumpkin Festival weekend. The location of the Captain’s House can’t be beat for access to downtown Damariscotta. It’s about a 10 minute walk. The whole street is lined with beautiful old homes and across the street from the house is a lovely cemetery right on the river.
The house is huge with multiple living-rooms and sitting rooms - plenty of space for a group of people to spread out and relax. This is our third visit and we hope to return!
This was our second visit to this house which is a really lovely old home in a wonderful location. It’s on a very quiet dead end street but just a short walk to downtown Damariscotta across the river.
The plumbing is not modern but is completely functional. The kitchen is well furnished with cooking equipment but there is no salt and pepper or other spices and condiments.
We love this old house and would highly recommend a stay there. It’s great for two couples - plenty of space to spread out.

Great location but somewhat lacking inside
This house is on a charming road and has a great overall location to be sure (short walk to downtown Damariscotta), yet there is much mustiness and many furnishings that are in need of repair or replacement. The one shower is tremendously small, scarcely over 2' x 2' wide. (The claw foot tub has old world charm but no shower.)

Overall a good stay!
Overall we enjoyed our stay - house was clean and comfortable - we did have a slight issue 're parking as it is on the road and on one of the days we returned to find several cars already parked there! (A minor irritation as one of our party has mobility issues) Great location with easy access to the village/town. Would recommend the property. Only downside is the need to make up beds upon arrival and the expectation that we launder all linens and towels prior to leaving. (It begs the question - what is the cleaning fee for?)
We enjoyed our stay in this quiet neighborhood. Lots of room to spread out and a lovely front porch to enjoy a cup of morning coffee. Close to downtown Newcastle and Damariscotta, excellent restaurants and shops, and short drive to beautiful nature walks, the ferry to Monhegan and swimming in nearby Damariscotta Mills (freshwater pond). The property manager was very responsive. We were disappointed when the DVD player did not work (frown) since there were many movies we wanted to watch, but whoever stays here next time will have a new one. Kitchen window did not open and the kitchen fan wasn't working, but there were portable fans in other rooms, so we used them instead. Old windows especially in the bedrooms needed sticks to stay up, but all in all we enjoyed our stay in this grand old home. It was terrific having a new W/D to use. Thank you!

Not as advertised or expected!
My first impression entering was so bad that I really wanted to turn and leave! What I saw was a room with very dirty curtains, windows ,a stained couch ,a well worn rug ,and a chandelier that hadn’t been touched with soap and water in a long time . Upon entering the main rooms that would be my living space I noticed broken furniture, and a couch that needed to be covered as it was so dirty. Ironically , the dishes ,appliances were clean and in working order. It would have been helpful to have a folder with hints as to tv channels and how to operate, maybe a list of local restaurants, and places of interest. I recognize that this is a very old place and it takes more money than the owner has to restore this place to its original beauty but I find Little sympathy for the lack of deep cleaning this home annually. The street and the people who live there are just wonderful! Many people I talked with were not surprised with the condition of this place as it’s been this way for yrs ! Overall, the place is just a wonderful peak at what these stately homes were once, the beautiful wide wood floors upstairs ,large bedrooms and not so adequate bathrooms. I must add that the cleanliness is not the fault of the Saturday maid .she did exactly what would be expected. It must be so frustrating for her !

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness
Great location, many positives
First the positives! This property is on an unbelievably cool street located just up the hill from the Damariscotta River and the town. Easy walk into town.
The beds were all very comfortable as were the pillows. There was enough space to spread out, this property seems ideal for a family. The porch is a great spot to hang. The little window A/C units actually did a very good job as long as you shut the rooms they were in up.
This property is attached to another building that someone is living in. No big deal for us, other than essentially the parking is on the street rather than off the street. No noise issues or anything like that, but I think it’s is good to mention this as it isn’t really a stand alone house, even though it’s huge, it is part of a larger house.
The negatives? First and foremost the house needs a deep clean badly. The floors are all very clean and the bathrooms were clean. No issues there. The kitchen was not. All of the glass knobs were really sticky, we immediately wiped them all down a couple times to get them clean. The fridge isn’t gross, but it’s definitely not clean. The freezer really needs to be cleaned. If we had been staying for more than two nights we would have cleaned them. They were not great. We did wipe the handles down as they were also very sticky. Other areas were not dirty per se, but just really need a good cleaning. Generally not a huge deal, but when paying a cleaning fee in addition to the nightly rate we sort of expect stuff to at least be mostly clean. It was not.
One of the bathrooms has a claw foot tub and the shower head needs to be changed to one that will throw the water, it essentially just runs out and straight down. Otherwise this bathroom is great. The other bathroom doubled as the laundry room and had a bunch of stuff(vacuum cleaner, broom, etc) just sort of thrown in the corner. Seems like that could find a better neater place. The shower is a small stand up and is pretty hard to shower in if you are over 5’10” or a bigger person. Sucks to not be able to get a decent shower. For most people maybe that isn’t an issue, but we like to have a good shower.
The mowers showing up at 7:20 AM and running mowers and string trimmers loudly on one of the two nights all year we are away from our 5 year old and could have slept in wasn’t amazing. Also they coated our cars down when they weed whacked one foot away.
Overall a nice place that could use a bit of work and cleaning.
What a great house, and a great area to explore. Very peaceful and beautiful. Birds right out front on the porch! Walkable to all of Newcastle and Damariscotta. Very comfortable and homey.
This is a great old house in a beautiful quiet neighborhood. Beds were comfortable, porch was inviting, and the location couldn't have been better. It does have old bathrooms and no AC, but there were window units and fans. Host communication was good.
We really enjoyed the house and the location was perfect. The front porch was great for a morning cup of coffee and afternoon snack. We enjoyed walking into town for a bite to eat and visit the shops along the way. The house is perfectly located for easily getting to the many great sites in the Boothbay area. We headed out for a different adventure every day and the location made it extremely easy.
We really enjoyed this house during our short stay in the Newcastle area. As the owner mentions, it is old which adds to its charm. Beds are comfortable, we had no problems with anything. The location is perfect, a short walk to Main St. in Newcastle/Damariscotta. It was also surprisingly quiet being so close to the Main St. and Rte. 1. It looks like the rear of the huge house is used as rentals, and the driveway is meant for their parking. We parked on street along the porch side of the house as requested, which was not a problem as this is a dead end street with very little traffic. We also enjoyed using the porch with friends who came over to celebrate a birthday after a puffin cruise out of the dock by Shaw's Lobster Pound in Bristol.
Great property for our family to use as a base for exploring the Maine coast. Eclectic home with plenty of room for everyone. Very clean and comfortable. We didn’t cook in the kitchen, but it was stocked and ready.
This was exactly what my family was looking for on our vacation. The house was comfortable, with more than enough room for all 6 of us. It was just a short walk to downtown!

About the host
Hosted by Property Manager/Owner
I am the great great granddaughter of Ebenezer Haggett who owned this property with his children and it is titled, "the Haggett Homestead". Ebenezer was famous as a shipbuilder who built the five masted schooner. Ebenezer had his ship building company in Newcastle which is now the Lincoln Home and built such beautiful ships as "the Elizabeth", "the Josephus", "the State of Maine". The craftsman in the home is mirrored after the ships with wainscoting and maple flooring.
Why they chose this property
Grear weekend getaway. The property is part of Maine history - with the wide pumpkin pine flooring, lovely architecture, quaint parlor and ballroom. Glidden Street was captured in DownEast Magazine as "Newcastle's Lovliest Lane". The countryside and beautiful federal homes provide the setting for Jane Austen's "Emma".
What makes this property unique
Close to town and shops, yet quiet and private; lovely sitting rooms for conversation, reading, quilting knitting; Porch setting which overlooks the Damariscotta River-- great for having coffee in the morning. Spacious rooms for friends and family
