About this property

Spacious Log Home on Secluded waterfront property

Tucked in the trees on a ledge overlooking McCauley Pond this lovely log sided home is ready for your perfect vacation. This non motorized pond is locally known as a productive spot to fish for pike, perch as well as large and small mouth bass and other species of fish. You may fish off the private dock or use the supplied canoe or row boat. It is always fun to stop on the island or just float around. Please be aware it's a short walk down some steps through the woods to reach the pond.

The house is very secluded with tons of privacy. There are only 3 or 4 houses on the pond and none are visible from the house. You can’t see or hear the road from the house. Several trails wind through the woods for short walks around the property. Just walking the well maintained driveway up to the road is a nice walk. If you prefer longer hikes you are not far from the ‘Saranac 6’ or the 46 High Peaks. The Visitor’s Interpretive Center at Paul Smith’s, about 10 minutes away, has many wide well maintained trails, programs and a butterfly house in season. There is also park land all around with countless trails.

Activities abound in the area. We are located close to the Saranac chain of lakes with several public boat launches. A 30 minute drive will bring you to Tupper Lake well known for the Adirondack Wild Center and its just opened elevated ‘Wild Walk’. You can also keep travelling to my favorite, the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Of course you must visit the village of Saranac Lake, ‘Capital of the Adirondacks’ and Lake Placid, home of 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics, to take advantage of the shops and restaurants. Minutes away, you will find Saranac Inn's golf course. Just started is a railroad bike trip that allows you to pedal a special bike on a RR track through the woods and past lakes and ponds(one being the pond our house is located on.)

The house itself is large, surrounded by deck on three sides, one covered, so you can enjoy the outdoors and the gas grill even if it’s raining.
The great room boasts a fireplace, piano, and large south facing windows looking out to the pond. In the great room is a couch with a pull out bed and also a futon. The first main floor bedroom features a queen sized bed, twin bed, and ensuite bathroom with a shower. The second main floor bed room has a queen sized bed and attached bathroom with tub/shower. Both main floor bedrooms have private entrances to the wrap around deck.
The master suite, on the upper floor, has a king sized bed and a loft overlooking the great room. On the loft is a pull out sleeper couch. The master suite has a private balcony. The master bathroom has a large shower and Jaccuzi tub with windows facing the woods.

The kitchen is well equipped with a large refrigerator, through door ice and water, dual fuels stove, dishwasher, and 2 microwaves. Small appliances include coffee maker, waffle iron, blender, crock pot, toaster and toaster oven. Plenty of cooking utensils are supplied as well as a full set of dishes and silver ware. The dining room table seats 10 or there are 2 picnic tables on the pond side deck and one on the covered deck not to mention 4 stools at the kitchen island.

The large well lit downstairs is a work in progress. Be careful around the building supplies and equipment but feel free to enjoy a game of pool on the 8’ x 4’ slate pool table. Paddles and oars are kept by the door that leads to path down to the pond.

On those hopefully rare indoor days checkout the entertainment center in the great room. It’s equipped with cable TV, DVDs, puzzles and games for all ages.
Winter brings many other activities for you enjoyment. You can ice fish out on the pond. Snowmobile trails are located nearby. Opportunities for cross country skiing and snow showing abound. Whiteface ski area is about 45 minutes away, the local Mount Pisgah and Big Tupper ski areas are closer and more accessible. Afterwards return home for a soak in the Jacuzzi or relax in front of the fireplace.

All in all we hope you enjoy your stay in a most beautiful area nature has to offer. Do as much or as little as you like, it’s your vacation!

Adirondack vacation 2024

Beautifull spacious log cabin home. Booking went smoothly. Used the kayaks and fished everyday. Caught some small perch. My favorite was listening to the breeze rustle through the trees while relaxing on the huge deck.

Perfect house for our ski trip.

This house was just what we were looking for. Big enough for 2 families. Close enough to the slopes but far enough from all the hassles of lake placid. Very clean and perfectly appointed. Being pet friendly was a very important to us and very accommodating.

We love it here…

It’s the most perfect retreat! We have now stayed here two years in a row. The hosts are wonderful—flexible, gracious and respond so quickly when we have questions. It’s so private, the driveway itself is a wonderful walk in the wintertime. We ice fish and then come right back into a warm cozy huge cabin. Just love it here.

Another start to Summer in ADK

This was our 3rd stay in the cabin and once again it did not disappoint. The weather was calling for rain all week but as they say up here, "just wait 5 minutes and it will change." We hiked every day, fished the pond, canoed, kayaked and relaxed. A few jaunts into LP and before we knew it the week was done. Already planning for next year.

Secluded house in the woods

Very large and beautifully built house. Modern appliances in good order; there is even a piano that we enjoyed. Comfortable and spacious master suite. Overall, we had a great time! Thank you! Suggestions for improvement: (1) The dock is not equipped for swimming. One has to wade through muddy bottom. We suggest installing longer dock with a ladder at the end to make entering water more pleasant. (2) There is no view of the lake as it is covered by trees. We suggest clearing out deciduous trees between the house and the lake to open up the view. (3) Request to remove bedding and start laundry before departure is unusual for a house at this price point.

Wonderful home and spaces. Location for nature, hiking and kayaking was perfect.

Everything as advertised. Perfectly stocked kitchen, utensils and supplies. (Could use a new TV but not a huge issue). Big common spaces yet places to "hide" if we wanted. McCauley pond was a terrific morning spot for coffee and nature. And just down the road in two directions were the most beautiful kayaking trails we have experienced. All agreed that we would come back here in the future without a second thought. Thanks to Chris and Elizabeth for making this a perfect week for us.

Best VRBO for Outdoor Lovers

This property is perfect for a family getaway! The communication with the host was great and checking in was super easy, he even let us check in a few hours early. The property far exceeded all expectations and the pictures did not do it justice! The property is well maintained and the home was spotless! Should be noted that the home kitchen had everything we could have possibly needed for our stay! There is a well maintained trail down to the dock, which had a canoe, kayaks, and a paddle boat! We used all of them and had a blast! They have tons of life jackets available and fishing poles for use too! The lake is gorgeous and is only shared with a few very distant homes, so it feels like you have it all to yourself! The basement was also fun with foosball and pool! We also enjoyed the wrap around patio and all of the seating! The piano upstairs was fun to play too! Highly recommend to any family - we had 6 people but it could definitely sleep up to 10 comfortably! We loved our stay and will definitely be back! Also not far from Saranac and Lake Placid which was great! Definitely a gem, you won’t be disappointed!

Outdoor paradise!

This house was a perfect fit for my super active family. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking, biking and hiking on the surrounding trails. It is nestled back in the woods so you feel completely secluded. Plus it's only 3.7 miles from Donnelly's Ice Cream, very convenient if your like my family and like to go 2 times a day! It's close to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. This house is absolutely beautiful. Tons of space and all the amenities you could ever need on those rainy days. My family will definitely be back. I would recommend this place to anyone, although I'm tempted to keep this gem a secret! The owners' response rate to any questions before, during or after your visit is amazing. Very accommodating and generous.

Wonderful week!

My family stayed at this Adirondack cabin July 1-8. We found it to be one of the nicest VRBO rentals we have used for a vacation. The cabin is beautiful, spacious, and comfortable and easily accommodated six adults. It was close to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, but secluded and peaceful. The bedrooms each had its own bathroom, the kitchen was well equipped, and the deck had more than enough space for activities under cover and open. The water was a short walk away with a dock and kayaks, canoe, and a rowboat available for use. Fishing was great! For those times we couldn’t be outdoors due to rainy weather, there were board games, jigsaw puzzles, books to read, and TV. Our favorite indoor activity was the pool table in the basement along with the best album collection ever! The only down side was that we had to leave after a week, but hope to return soon!

Like coming home…

This was the second time we stayed here! Chris allowed us to arrive earlier to check in - which worked out great for us since I was traveling with my family (husband, four girls ages 6, 4, 4 and 5 months) and my brother and sister in law along with our dogs. As soon as we walked in the door - it was like coming home- the log cabin is BIG, but they manage to make it feel so cozy. Everything we needed was there! We LOVE the heated floors and the fireplace!! Despite an unseasonably warmer week, we still managed to go sledding one day on the driveway, explore down near the lake, take the horse drawn sleigh ride at Lake clear Inn, and make our annual visit to downtown Placid (20 min drive) and the brewery! All this whole coming back to home base! We’re so grateful for Chris and his family to share their beautiful home!

Exceptional. Beautiful. Spacious. Feature-filled. Convenient.

We walked into the Great Room and said, "Wow!" This from experienced HomeAwayers and our even more experienced family of friends from Germany. We didn't have a chance to meet the owners, Chris and Betsy, who live off-site, but Chris responds quickly, fully, helpfully, and congenially to all inquiries. The home, the location, and the pond (actually a small 76-acre lake) are just plain wonderful. Not accessible for mobility impaired, but superb for everyone else. The path down to the pond is rustic, well-maintained, and easily walked. The house is bright, spacious, comfortably furnished, well-appointed, and truly beautiful. On the outside, there is more deck space than one would hope, both open air and covered in case of rain. Thanks, Hummes, it was wonderful.

Quiet slice of heaven....

This property couldn't have been much better if I had imagined it myself. The house is spacious, the area is very quiet, and the lakefront dock area is a nature lover's dream. The description as provided is exactly what you find upon arrival. The house is clean and attractive. It is spacious and cozy at the same time. The basement is unfinished (as the owner stated) but we had a great time playing pool and listening to music from our youth on the record player. The kitchen has everything you could want, and is great for a family who wants to cook and socialize at the same time. If, for some reason you don't know where to find something, Chris and Betsy respond promptly to questions. We spent days hiking, paddling, and relaxing. One day we went to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and learned while having fun. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a get away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. This property is a little slice of heaven to those who enjoy the peace of the natural world.

Wonderful home, property and location

We truly enjoyed our stay on McPond, as McCauley Pond is affectionately nicknamed by the hosts. The home is open and spacious, modern with lots of nice touches, everything you need to stay in and be cozy. Kitchen very well equipped, we cooked at home nearly the whole week with ease. Secluded and private, very quiet, dark nights. Tons of windows bring the outdoors in. Comfortable beds and furniture, lots of good places to hang out. Foosball and pool tournaments were held nightly in the basement. Canoe, rowboat and 2 kayaks down by the dock. Plenty of hungry little sunfish in the pond. One loon family inhabits the pond, and we also saw grouse, warblers, and brown creepers in addition to the more typical chickadees in the trees around the house. Less than 15 minutes to the town of Saranac Lake, great location for outdoorsy folks (we finished the Saranac Six and my family also hiked some High Peaks), and also easy access to many nearby lakes and wilderness areas. Also absolutely comfortable if you just want stay at the house and hang out. Books, movies, puzzles and games available for evenings/rainy days.

Quiet Paradise

I can't say enough great things about this property. Booking was quick and easy-and we submitted a fairly last minute request. The pictures don't do the property justice. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax, but still have outdoor activities, this is the place. The inside was beautiful and very clean. I feel like the owners thought of everything-menus, first aid kit-you name it. It was a great location for my husband, myself, and our two dogs. There was plenty to do outside in the snow with them, and the long driveway was perfect for getting in our regular walks. My husband and I brought our snowshoes, so we were able to explore in the woods with the pups as well. We always bring our dog crates when we travel, and the layout of the home was perfect for setting those up. I can't tell you how much I appreciate a clean, well kept, dog friendly home where my dogs actually feel comfortable! We booked this house primarily just to relax and get back into nature, and we were definitely able to do that. The quiet was perfect-we didn't see anyone-and that was exactly what we needed after the crazy holidays! We can't wait to come back in the future-we are already trying to figure out dates!

Spacious, clean, and in a great location!

We enjoyed the house and property very much. The property is beautiful and over looks a small lake. We enjoyed snowshoeing in some trails around the property. The nights are incredibly quiet and peaceful and the summer evenings must be beautiful out on the deck... It was very cold during our stay (-4 to 20 degrees) but the house was tight and warm. That wood stove puts off some heat! The common area is large and great for a group, but also allows for privacy if you wish...there are many great sitting spots to curl up with a book or just have a cup of coffee while enjoying the large windows and in our case, watching the snow fall. They have a great set up here and we especially liked the entry in the basement to leave all our snowy gear. The property is very close to many trails and outdoor activity centers. Or if you want to go to town, lake placid/mirror lake is about 25 minutes. It was our first visit to this area and discovered there are so many things to do we didn’t have enough time for them all! The only amenity we would add is a hot tub!!! They have a great jacuzzi in the master bathroom, however... Overall, the stay was our best HomeAway/Airbnb stay yet!

Great for all ages!

We were a total of 6 people (4 adults, 2 tweens) at the end of June. Although it rained quite heavily during most of our stay, we still enjoyed staying at this house. If you have kids that can hold a fishing pole (even a simple bamboo pole with line and hook), they will be sure to catch fish right off the dock! The fish are very naive. The house is huge and has everything you need. The lake might as well be a private lake because we couldn't hear anyone else and we only saw one guy on a paddleboard during our entire stay. It is pure relaxation with no one around. We would definitely come back. If you are a hard-core fisherman, bring your own gear (pole, worms, hooks, pliers, sinkers and bobs) There are plenty of fishing poles in the basement, but many of them did not work well. That is not the fault of the owner though! I'm sure people come and use them and don't bother fixing them. The only thing I would recommend to the owner is to get one more inexpensive one-person kayak so people can go out in pairs with the kayaks.

Beautifully Appointed Lakeside Retreat

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this home. It is open and bright, very comfortably furnished and extremely well equipped. The combination of the location deep in the woods, the many doors and windows and the ceiling fans allowed for easy ventilation and a very comfortable environment, day and night. This home is exactly as advertised. The owners are most accommodating and were incredibly fast to respond to any questions that arose both before and during our stay. The lake is beautiful, very peaceful and larger than you would anticipate from looking at pictures or maps. The importance of the restriction against motorized watercraft is not to be underestimated. The only sounds came from the Loons nesting on the small island and the hundreds of splashes from our dog diving off the pier to retrieve her decoy. The wrap around deck is open to sunlight in sections and covered in others making it very flexible and comfortable for a variety of uses. The gas grill is positioned in the covered area so one can cook outside in any conditions although we experienced perfect weather all week. We used the grill extensively and it worked very well. You don’t need to bring anything, including your pool cue or your fishing pole (although we did in both cases) as everything is provided for you. There are even tree branches strategically positioned to make putting the boats into and out of the water an absolute snap. These owners have thought of everything and their thorough preparation made for a very enjoyable and carefree vacation week. If there is one caution, it would be the vertical distance from the house to the lake. The perspective inherent in photographs doesn’t really allow that aspect to be illustrated. The owners have very thoughtfully cut a gradually sloped path into the side of the hill to mitigate the issue but it is still a long way down. Families with elderly parents or those dealing with other mobility issues might want to consider that aspect in their planning. Our family enthusiastically recommends this home for your Adirondack vacation. We had a great time!

About the host

Hosted by Chris Humme

Host profile image
Chris and Betsy currently live in New Jersey but hope to someday live in upstate New York permanently. Chris works in engineering and computers and Betsy works in the health care industry. We both like to cross country ski so we take advantage of all the trails available in the area. We love to take our boat out on the chain of lakes or just float around the pond with our fishing poles.

Why they chose this property

Fell in love with the location.

What makes this property unique

We love to be able to walk down to the pond to enjoy the view from the dock. We also love the seclusion of being tucked in among the trees surrounding the house. It is also wonderful to sit in the hot tub in the master bathroom and watch the snow fall.

In the summertime, we always add a stop at Donnelly's ice cream located by the "blinking light" at the intersection of rtes. 86 and 186. Their ice cream is an extra special treat!
