About this property
Country house in the walled garden of historic West Stow Hall
Offering total privacy in the unique setting of the old walled garden of West Stow Hall, Gardener's Cottage is a charming base from which to explore the beautiful towns and countryside of Suffolk. With six acres of gardens, woods and paddocks of the Hall to explore and within walking distance of the king's Forest it is ideal for those wishing to ride, walk, fish, golf and enjoy the many country pursuits offered locally while Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham , Long Melford, Newmarket and Cambridge are all within easy reach as are Aldburgh and Southwold making day trips to the coast an easy option. Local pubs offer good food whilst Bury St. Edmunds, a 15min drive, has a wide variety of restaurants.
Recently renovated to a high standard the cottage offers two double bedrooms, one with a king size bed, the other with twin, zip and link, beds. There is a family bathroom with shower over, a well equipped, eat- in kitchen with views over a paddock, and a large open plan living dinning room with French windows on to the sun trap garden.. As well as oil central heating and modern cooker, there is a solid fuel Rayburn in the kitchen and a wood burning stove in the sitting room. Comfortable settees and good quality furnishings make the cottage a very cosy home from home in all weathers and at all times of the year.
Larger groups of up to 10, could also be easily accommodated by booking Orchard Cottage, which sleeps 4, as well.
Dogs are welcome but please note that, as we are surrounded by fields occupied by mares and foals, they must remain on leads at all times when in the grounds. The cottage garden is secure, so it is fine for dogs to roam at will there.
Please note that although the cottage is all on one level parking is a short walk away in front of West Stow Hall. It is not possible to park next to the cottage. There is plenty of space for several cars and the walk only takes a couple of minutes over flat ground. Pets are welcome but we ask that guests let us know in advance. Although we normally only have one pet at a time we are open to more staying but this would only be after discussion at the time of booking.

We had a lovely few day's. Great location. 10 minutes from the A14.completely safe enclosed garden for our dog. Lovely veiw of the sheep from kichen window. We definitely recommend. Thank you.
Had a wonderful and relaxing stay in this beautiful cottage. We loved every minute. So much that we’ve booked again for November!! The hosts were great and the location was stunning x
House was spotless, location is beautiful! Have stayed here before and will stay again. Hosts were on hand if needed but left us to our own devices. Lots of lovely walks in the woods nearby with our dog-she loved it. Highly recommend a stay here
The cottage was just beautiful. Cosy but spacious, very well equipped kitchen, and so many thoughtful and helpful touches - including a Christmas tree and decorations!Thank you, Eileen, for a really special holiday.
West Stow is close to the Kings forest which is great if you have dogs or great if you don’t. The cottage was perfect and wildlife is all around. The horse in the field whilst washing dishes, the munkjac deer crossing the field and all kinds of birds made the trip memorable. A lovely place for a restful stay but with plenty of fun trips on the doorstep.
The house is spacious, very well equipped and with a lovely country-house style decor. Fabulous setting in the grounds of a beautiful Elizabethan manor house. The cottage has its own enclosed and spacious garden. A very special experience. We really loved it.
If you are looking to stay in a quintessential Suffolk cottage in a very quiet country setting, this will take some beating.
It was bitterly cold during our stay and it was fairly difficult to keep warm in the cottage. Staying during a warmer month of the year would have made our time more comfortable, but it's a lovely place to feel at home in.
Eileen is a great host, who is extremely attentive, friendy and helpful.
A wonderfully old-school, dog-friendly, comforting home from home, offering incredible peace and quiet. Comfy firm beds and soft pillows, a little hall for boots, coats and dog paraphernalia, a cosy farmhouse kitchen that can be closed off to keep dogs from the sitting room, every form of coffee-making equipment offered, large fridge (with welcome bottle of milk) and separate freezer, lots of hot water (it takes a few minutes to come through!), efficient heating (though bedrooms were hard to heat in the dead of winter during our visit but that makes for a good night's sleep), good wifi and TV with all the streaming channels available to log into, and a super-efficient wood burner, along with board games in the snug area. Wouldn't change a thing!
The cottage was everything I would expect in a historical English cottage with vibrant walled gardens and cozy accommodations. (The living room furniture could have been more comfortable). It was a perfect location to visit the many small towns, parks, cathedrals and castles. Our hostess, Eileen was very accommodating and even gave us a tour of the old (originally built in 1530) West Stow Hall. I would definitely stay again. I even got to get her raspberries and rhubarb from the garden and put cut flowers in the cottage!
Fabulous from start to finish, the cottage was as described, surprisingly spacious, clean and cosy. Eileen is a welcoming host, friendly and helpful. The garden is gorgeous, such a lovely space to sit and relax in the morning with breakfast and of an evening with a glass of wine! The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed blissful, undisturbed sleep in them. I’d recommend Gardeners Cottage to anybody looking for a place to stay in the area, its countryside setting but with close proximity to Bury St Edmund’s and all it has to offer make for the perfect stay.
This cottage looks like it’s been taken straight out of the Secret Garden. The grounds are so beautiful and peaceful and a wildlife spotters dream. My two children (8 & 13) loved the bedroom they shared and had so much fun in the gardens. It’s perfectly located for some many things. We enjoyed a day at Southwold and a day at Thetford Forest. Eileen and Andy were fantastic hosts and would do anything for you. We will definitely be looking to book again
The Gardener’s Cottage was amazing! It is perfectly located to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to Bury and other locations. West Stow Hall is beautiful and full of history. Waking up to watch the horses was also nice amenity! Many thanks to the wonderful owners. We hope to be back one day.
Although Gardener's Cottage is in the garden of our home West Stow Hall it is totally private. We will not be breathing down your neck but are on hand if any questions or problems arise. I run the Hall as a Wolsey Lodge B&B while my husband works in London. We love the history and beauty of the Hall and Suffolk in general and enjoy seeing others discover how lovely this part of the world is and how much there is do.
Our dog, Monty, a border coliie cross is great. Very friendly and happy to accompany everyone every where. He is great when taken for walks as very obedient and - so far- has always returned when called! New hens will be arriving shortly and we are happy for children to help with the egg collecting while there is apple picking in the autumn!
