Ask a questionAbout Jason
I inherited this unique, beautiful place a few years ago and decided I would like to share it with people who love the same things as I do – the history of this quirky rustic cottage, its beautiful garden and the stunning countryside around it. It is a genuine pleasure to hear from guests who have discovered and fallen in love with this magical corner of West England.
Why Jason chose Old Cleeve
The building St Pancras Chapel is a converted 13th century Chapel, built by the monks of nearby Cleeve Abbey. With extensions built in the 17th and early 20th century, it is a uniquely historic building – with its stained-glass window and English Gothic arches – that combines the charms of a rustic cottage and the conveniences of modern living. The garden The Holy Well in the garden predates the Chapel and runs into a stream joining the Washford River, which runs its course within earshot along the floor of this secluded river valley. Set in an acre of private, mature gardens – comprising lawns, a kitchen garden, mature shrubs and flowerbeds, orchard and paths and bridges, the Chapel sits below the stunning countryside of the Brendon Hills and is ideally located for dog-owners and ramblers.
What makes this Cottage unique
St Pancras Chapel combines everything you'd expect of a traditional English country cottage with a history more commonly associated with National Trust and English Heritage properties. The property is set in a remote part of the West Somerset countryside and the enclosed garden is an oasis of peace and quiet, the silence only broken by the tinkle of the spring in the ancient well and stream running into the nearby River Washford.
