About this property
Keanes' Cottage (A Special Holiday Rental)
Keane's Cottage (a restored ruin) is a special holiday rental offering it’s own unique experience that has been recently approved under the new 'Welcome Standard' by 'Failte Ireland' (the Irish tourist board).
The River Blackwater creates the boarder of Waterford and Cork Counties. As it approaches the town of Youghal it opens out into a large bay and then narrows before opening out to the ocean. On the West Side, the town of Youghal runs up a steep hill from the waters edge; on the East side of the bay are the fields dotted with houses of Kinsalebeg. Keanes Cottage is nestled on the Kinsalebeg side with a view of the town on the other side of the water and just a four minute walk to the bay. It is an excellent and central location for traveling to many landmarks and tourist attractions. An excellent walking or cycling location, the cliffs of Ardmore are only a 10 minute drive away. At least six beaches are within a ten minute drive. The main road (N25) between Cork and Waterford is only five minutes away. There are many golf course nearby.
But it is also a wonderful Cottage to just relax and enjoy, put your feet up in front of the fire. It has a spacious living room, dinning room and and kitchen and all the modern convinces. Large teak windows and skylights keep everything bright. We have done much to make your stay comfortable. We want for you to have a great stay and if there is any way we can help you with your planning or questions you may have please let us know. We are more than happy to help.

Hi Olga, I am happy to hear that you had a good stay. Bridie said that it was a joy to have you and your family. I hope that you are able to come and stay again. Thank you, Rowland Orr, Keane's Cottage.
I had a wonderful and restful time at Keanes Cottage. It was a good central location to a variety of places to go to and things to see. Bridie was a doll and supportive with a hiccup or two, that were quickly resolved! Rowland was great at communication and has a lovely home. I walked to the beach everyday and visited with the cows too. It’s just a gem of a home.
My husband and I, along with out two daughter's (9 and 14) enjoyed about 2.5 weeks at Keane's Cottage and had the best of times. The cottage was a dream, very clean, in the perfect location for our needs, and leaving to come home was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I could not imagine staying anywhere else as the cottage had everything we could have possibly needed. I'd highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a place to stay while visiting the area.
We stayed about 10 days. Cottage is centrally located between Waterford and Cork within 45 minutes each way. Town of Youghal is just accress the bay with shops and a few restaurants. Dungarvin, a bigger town is 20 minutes away. Cottage is a 5 minute walk to the bay. Owners were great and responded immediately when the refrigerator died. they arranged a temporary refrigerator from their efficiency nex door and got a new refrigerator within a few days. we only had to use our cooler for one night. Very friendy and responsive owner.
This is a lovely property in the quiet countryside. The cottage was amazingly clean and cozy. Chris and Marie met us there upon arrival and showed us around the place. Rowland was wonderful in checking in on us via email and text. The cottage is only minutes away from the town of Youghal and the views from the cottage are amazing. The house was plenty roomy for the three of us and could easily handle one more person. I would definitely stay here again!! Absolutely beautiful. The locals where very friendly! Bridie checked in on us and made sure everything was working. They even provided us with some basic necessities. Great place and great people!!!

Heavenly, peaceful retreat
We were phoned by the owner prior to the holiday and enjoyed a chat. He also rang from USA to ensure all was well on arrival.
We were welcomed to Keane's by the owner's extremely helpful custodian, Chris, into a beautiful home prepared by Bridie who is the housekeeper - a welcome food pack and fresh flowers. Both Chris and his wife, Marie, and Bridie were all readily available to answer any questions. Inside, the house is spacious and comfortable and tastefully decorated with antique furniture and collectables (I would not take my sister who is a handbag-swinging type of a girly). The sitting room is lush.
Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, we were not far from the lively town of Youghal where we chose to eat in the various, good restaurants - there is an excellent Chinese restaurant and Aherne's is really worth a visit as is The Old Quay. No, we didn't cook much but everything needed was there in the well-equipped kitchen. There is a utility equipped with washer and dryer which we made use of. The shower room and separate bathroom are spacious and well equipped with towels. Comfortable beds completed the pleasure.
The garden was tranquil; barely a car, or person for that matter, passed by but those that did gave us a wave and had a short chat. This is what we love about Ireland, people always have time. We spent many an hour sitting out enjoying the peace and the birds.
In conclusion, Keane's is quintessentially Ireland in a capsule, to us. Would we go again? If I tell you that I considered, in a flight of fancy, of squatting in the house (the owner is far too nice to inflict that on him) that should give you the answer. On the day we left we were invited for tea by Marie and Chris, where we said our goodbyes with slightly heavy hearts. Oh, yes, the Wifi works very well.

My Mother's grandparents lived in the little town of Tallow just 20 minutes away from Keane's Cottage. She purchased and restored the cottage some twenty years ago. She used to stay for six months here each year and six months in the US. It was really all her efforts and Love that made Keane's Cottage what it is today. When she was restoring the Cottage she met Chris and Marie, a wonderful couple who live just a mile away in Piltown. They became my Mother's best friends and all these years they have looked after the house when ever she was not there. They are the caretakers of the house and with out them the Cottage would not be here. When Guests have come to stay, they have always received them and stopped by to check that they are ok and that every thing is working well. When they come by please feel free to invite them in for tea. The photo above is of Chris and Marie taken a few years ago. They are sitting just outside the front door. A lovely place to sit with a cup of tea.
Why they chose this property
The Cottage is located in the center of the southern coast and is only five minutes from the main road between Cork and Waterford. It is only a seven to ten minute drive around the bay to the town of Youghal. You will find all your grocery needs there and there are numerous bakeries to find your Irish soda bread. I also recommend the Smoked Salmon from Youghal Bay Seafoods. It is made daily on location. I also recommend Jack O'Patsy Pottery from where the plates and bowls that are in the kitchen are made. They also have a very nice cafe and the Youghal Craft and Design Center is located up the stairs. There are plenty of places to eat as well. Also in Dungarvan 20 minutes away and Ardmore 10 minutes away.
What makes this property unique
Others who have come to visit have said Keane's Cottage is a unique experience unto it's self. With its teak windows, and deal wood floors and vaulted ceilings, and the wavey plaster walls. It is decorated with antiques that my Mother collected over the years. Much care has gone into making the house comfortable for your stay. It is for those with a historical appreciation and are looking for something a little different. It is our hope that the Cottage will not just be a place to stay but an integral part of your holiday or vacation experience. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do.
