About this property

Beautiful Year Round House On Sunset Side Of Elk Lake.

Our wonderful vacation home is on 135 feet of gorgeous Elk Lake. It is located on the dead end of a small private road and heavily landscaped to create maximum privacy. We have a small sandy beach perfect for the kids, spectacular swimming off the dock, the best sunsets, and what we feel is the perfect location. We are 6 miles from the cute village of Elk Rapids on Lake Michigan, 23 miles from the Traverse City Airport, and just over an hour to exploring the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore to the west, and Charlevoix/Petosky/Harbor Springs attractions to the north.
Our cottage is uniquely positioned just yards from the water. We love the close proximity of the shore, dock and hoist to our kitchen and deck as well as the sound of the water at night from our bedroom.
As our photos show our ground floor living space is completely open between our large family, kitchen and dining areas. This has facilitated so many great memories with everyone of all ages congregating in the same area whether playing games, watching tv/movies, listening to music, cooking or dining..On cooler evenings the fireplace and it's wood burning insert make ir all cozy. We also have a portable brass firepit for evenings on the beach for marshmallows or smores.
Our ground floor master bedroom is located off the kitchen with windows looking out the beach and lake. It has a queen bed with a large walk in closet. It also has an oversized bathroom and shower which accommodated the first owners wife's' disabilities. Sliders out the side lead to a covered grilling area between our house and the garage. This makes easy access between the kitchen and the gas grill and/or Big Green Egg smoker.
The second floor holds three bedrooms. At the top of the stairs is a large bedroom overlooking the lake that sleeps four with two twins and trundle beds beneath. It has it's own ensuite full bath.
Across the hall is a nice bedroom with a queen size bed. It shares a full bath off the hallway with the fourth bedroom that is over the garage at the end of the hallway. It is a very large room with four twins and sitting area.

Great Quiet Family Spot

My family had a great week staying at this home. Beautiful sunsets, great swimming off the dock, and our kids really took advantage of playing in the sand/beach area on the property. The rooms and closets in the house are very generous in size and the house is well laid out for family hang out time, but you can also get away for quiet time if needed.

My family and I spent a week in July at this fantastic house on Elk Lake. Fantastic accommodations. Large bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. We were able to entertain our extended family during the week. We rented a pontoon boat and were able to moor it in front of the house. Kids loved the beach. Great family vacation. Hopefully we can do it again next year.

2024 Family Vacation

This was our 2nd stay with you and we once again enjoyed the house and location. Plenty of room for our family of 10. We had the best week yet of weather getting 4-5 lake days of just enjoying the water. Great places to walk for some of us, close to many activities for young and old. Definitely recommend…..

Wonderful house

We had a great time. Good house with lots of space. Sandy beach was fun for kids, the lake has a rock bottom at this house. We had our swim mat and it was really fun. Thank you Tom. The house is very private and about 15 mins from town.

Spacious luxury rental for large family

An excellent choice to enjoy the beautiful turquoise water of Elk lake. Tucked down at the end of a private road with landscaping that provides a serene environment. The neighbor who manages the property is very nice and helpful and will give you advice on enjoying the area. The master bedroom is especially spacious and has an amazing view.

Summer 2020

The house was perfect for my extended family (myself, wife, two teenage daughters and parents) to spend a week on the lake in northern Michigan. The house was better than described in the listing as it was fully stocked with all the kitchen gear needed to really cook fantastic meals (pots/pans, gas grill, green egg smoker, cookie sheets, utensils, coffee maker, bagel toaster....). Tom did a fantastic job providing info both about the house and the local area (restaurants, hiking trails, golf courses and shops) to make sure our trip/stay allowed us to experinence the local area and take advantage of the great activities near the house. Elk Lake is perfect. We had initially thought Torch lake would be preferred lake but the smoother water conditions and warmer water temperatures of Elk lake were greatly appreciated by my family. We did take our boat to torch lake via the river which was a fun little trip but we were happy to get back to the calmer Elk lake with its lower traffic and congestion compared to Torch. If our vacation plans take us back to the Traverse City area we will definately try to stay at Tom's place again.

Wonderful Week at Elk Lake!

The house was beautiful and a great set up for our family. We enjoyed the beautiful views from the house/deck/dock and lake. The kids played in the sand everyday and we had a great time out in the water. The town of Elk Rapids really had everything we needed! Great Location to many different areas and things to do!

My wife and I have lived a little more than two hours south of our cottage in Grand Rapids for close to forty years. How fortunate we are to not only have such a wonderful year round cottage in beautiful northern Michigan but to also have watched the amazing resurrection of GR into one of the most vibrant cities in the midwest. I have practiced dentistry while my wife represents neglected and abused kids in the juvenile courts. Our daughter and her husband live in Manhattan NY and as you can imagine live very busy lives.
This brings us to why we are testing the rental market. Over the last few years
we have seen our utilization drop yet we aren't prepared to sell. I still have out of state relatives who have been coming in August for 20 years and we don't want to give it up. In addition I don't plan on working too many more years. We considered selling a few years ago but never pulled the trigger We think that those who try it will want to return .

Why they chose this property

We almost bought on Torch lake but discovered this at the last minute. The dead end location on road is great. Elk Lake is so user friendly. The water is consistently 10-15 degrees warmer, much smaller waves, beautiful sandbars to swim off and always a bay or cove for the kids to ski or tube.
Of course to take full advantage of the lake you might want a boat. We have been advised to not rent ours our for liability and breakdown possibilities. So if you have a boat of your own or want to rent one locally we will make our hoist available to you for a small fee. Someone would have to remove our boat and trailer it. We can't leave the hoist in with cover on it without a boat as a wind could destroy hoist. If interested we will find the cost for you.
