It is full of character with many buildings of architectural interest, including its magnificent parish church. Independent shops sit alongside the deli, butchers, and bakers, with a strong local food ethic. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level, and there are good walking routes all around. Well dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival in May, and a leading rural annual arts festival in September, showcasing contemporary art and international performers of every kind. With an art deco independent cinema and a range of places to eat there is plenty to keep you entertained. The town offers a leisure centre with a climbing wall and a small trainer swimming pool, an Eco Centre, and the Mount Cook Adventure Centre.
