The Vall Ferrera, is located in the Pallars Sobirà, whose capital is Sort. Àreu is well known for being the base of ascent to the Pica de Estats, the highest summit in Catalonia (3,143m) and many other mountain peaks of great prestige, some of them of more than 3,000m.
