A HOUSE CHARGED WITH HISTORY

It is located in the heart of the village, in the quarter called "Casa quadra" (or barracks) of Nonza and is a real history book. Subsequently, it was inhabited by Giovanni Mattei, Corsaire in the service of the Viceroy Gilbert Elliot, during the Anglo-Corsican kingdom. The following years, intrepid commanders of the merchant marine or military who participated in the great adventures of their time as the expedition of the Duke of Luynes in the Red Sea, lived there. It also sheltered very famous hosts such as Pascal Paoli, James Cook (discoverer of Australia) and more recently the painter Léonor Fini or the singer Jean Ferrat.

About the host
Hosted by Jean-Paul Mattei
This house is a heritage of my family since 1557. Of course, the built has changed over time and only the heart of the house, located in the lateral extension of “Casa quadra”, dates from this time. The front facade dates from the end of the 18th century and was built around an old oil mill that is now located in the cellar. The recent rear façade allowed building modern bathrooms while preserving its original volumes. My ancestors, like many others, opted for the marine trades either in the French navy or as privateer in the service of the Knights of Malta or Pascal Paoli. Much more recently, my father has been Prefect in Algeria after graduating from the École Libre de Sciences Politiques in Paris. As for me, I went to the communal school of Nonza, to Saint-Joseph secondary school in Avignon, to the University of Aix-Marseille III, UWL and Harvard Law School in the USA. I’m now a lawyer and a senior lecturer for the universities of Corsica and Leonard de Vinci in Paris.
Why they chose this property
Renting my house is firstly a way to have the financial means to preserve the rich 600-year history of this place. It’s also a way to take part in the village life by maintaining this house beyond the time that I have. Finally, it’s a way to allow our community to benefit from the pleasure of receiving you, as future goodwill ambassadors of Nonza.
What makes this property unique
Nonza is a magic place, it’s almost captivating because of the contrasts that the setting offers; both sea and mountain. If you hate black-grey, blue, red and green, run away, this village won’t suit you. On the contrary, if you want to avoid the stereotypes of the tourist parks, here you will have the opportunity to savour all the delights of one of the last authentic areas of our region.
