About this property

Riverfront Gardens Paddle to the Beach, Rejuvenation Peace & Quiet!

It’s still here. The old Hawai‘i you’ve always dreamed of still exists. The Riverhouse sits on nearly two acres of pristine riverfront botanical gardens, in one of the last areas on Kauai where time has basically stood still. It still feels like you're stepping back into old Hawai‘i when things were uncomplicated, undeveloped, authentic, and unhurried. At River Estate I have been welcoming guests for over 30 years, consistently earning 5-star reviews. Many guests have shared how the river’s gentle current and morning bird songs became the rhythm of their days, transporting them back to a time when Kaua‘i’s beauty was raw and untouched. Evenings bring the scent of tropical blossoms on warm breezes, while the flowing water becomes a natural lullaby—peaceful and soul-restoring. Guests often speak of the rare blend of privacy and the convenience of it's central location. The spacious grounds feel completely secluded and private but outside the property the busy world awaits you. The central location is just 10 minutes east lies the town of Hanalei, and 10 minutes west brings you to Ke‘e Beach and the Nā Pali Coast trail in Hā‘ena State Park. Many guests describe how coming “home” each afternoon felt like a daily ritual—restorative, grounding, and essential to the experience. Fresh tropical flower scents, botanical garden whispers , and unfiltered natural beauty come together here. The Riverhouse isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a living reminder of a Kaua‘i that time has left untouched. Yes, it's still right here for you to experience yourself.

Great place to stay!

Property was as advertised and well equipped. The location is fairly tucked away on a small river with two beaches close by. There was a small general store and coffee shop close by which were handy to avoid extra trips to Hanalei. Mark was very responsive so check in and out were simple. Would recommend.

Gorgeous location, excellent host, beautiful home

The North Shore is our favorite spot on the planet and we’ve been fortunate to visit many times. Mark was hands down the best host of any property we’ve stayed at and he has a beautiful, comfortable home with all the amenities you could hope for. We had a marvelous time and would gladly book again.

Wonderful Stay at the River House

My family of six had a wonderful stay at the River House. Having access to the beach via the river was one of the reasons we chose this home, and that did not disappoint. Also, I enjoyed meeting Mark and you can tell from your first interaction that he really wants to be involved and help you enjoy his home. He had the kayaks and paddle boards that we had rented there and ready for us to get into the water when we arrived, and his concierge fee to do this for us was not too bad. The fresh, cool, clear water of the river was refreshing and almost each day of our stay we would make the 5 minute paddle to the beach. We enjoyed the freshwater side of the beach but the ocean side is not really a swimming beach (were told by several locals not to go on the ocean side due to this being called “Shark Beach.”) We rented houses on four different Hawaiian islands this trip, and the River House was definitely one of our favorites. I will agree with the other reviews that the dogs are very loud when they get wound up, but having AC in the bedrooms was fantastic, and when we shut the windows and turned in the AC you don’t notice the outside noises. I will also agree with other reviews that there are more rules with this house than any other we stayed at, but that did not hamper our enjoyment of this home. We got good at taking off our shoes before climbing the stairs! If you want an authentic island experience out of the hustle and bustle, I think you will great enjoy Marks place!!

Amazing River Retreat

I would like to tell you that this is a horrible place to stay... but it is not horrible. It is quite wonderful. Mark has arguably one of the best VRBO's my family and I have stayed at. Well appointed in every aspect. We prepared almost every meal during our stay and the kitchen has everything we needed. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. Whatever amenity we needed was provided. This was the perfect place for us. Off the beaten path right down the river from the beach. From the sounds of birds in the morning, to the lush jungle smells of the evening, this is truly an oasis.Communication with Mark was great, and is what you would expect from a top notch VRBO host. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your River Estate, Mark. We will be back.

Amazing Property, Amazing Location!

The River Estate Riverhouse was absolutely perfect for our small group trip to Kauai. Mark was extremely communicative and responsive before and during our trip. Check-in was super easy, the house was clean and fully stocked and a short drive to Hanalei Bay and Tunnels Beach which was awesome. I couldn't recommend this property more. Our group had a great time. Thank you Mark for the hospitality! We will definitely be back.

Jungle retreat

We stayed in the River house in May of 2025. Mark's property is very charming and isolated. House is a little dated but very well maintained and clean. He has a state of the art tesla power system and other mechanicals seem to be very updated. Location is great if you prefer privacy, dive to Hanalei takes 10 to 15 minutes over windy roads that are very dark at night. This is mentioned in other reviews but Kauai has a extensive population of wild chickens, and the rosters get very vocal about 3am. The neighbors either have a lot of dogs or are a kennel of some kind so be prepared for barking in the morning. We mitigated the noise by closing windows in the bedrooms at night and running the AC, noise machines were available in each bedroom but we did not use them.Mark has an extensive list of rules for the property and we did our best to be respectful and follow the rules to the point that it did not impede our comfort. Kid’s joked it’s like the “Nick Saban commercial.” Energy usage seems to be a big concern, and this is closely monitored, you will receive a call if abused we did, although it was apparently a false alarm.

Feel Like a Local!

The River House was a perfect oasis for me and my family. Having visited Hanalei many times over the past decade, we were already very familiar with the area and choice of accommodations. While some condos have fantastic ocean views (which we prioritized when we first came to this area), we wanted more space (kids no longer little), air conditioning in the evenings, privacy, quiet, beauty and a convenient location to everything we love about Hanalei. We didn't miss the ocean view one bit - it was just a paddle up the river from the property. We had total privacy in the middle of a gorgeous tropical garden, beautiful scents after the rainfall, birdsong and peace. The house was spotless, the beds were extremely comfortable, and we had lots of room to spread out. We cooked some lovely meals and felt "at home". We were just a few minutes walk to the local shop for the basics - such friendly folks there, where you can also hop onto the Haena State Park shuttle. We were a few minutes' drive from our favorite beach (Lumaha'i) where the fresh water from the river meets a gorgeous surf, and less than 10 min drive from Hanalei town center. Mark arranged delivery of the paddleboards as well as the gear to attach to our rental car. Wi-Fi worked great. We wouldn't hesitate to return to pretend we were locals for just a few days!

Paradise

The pictures don't do it enough justice. The home and surrounding yard/driveway is unreal how beautiful it all is. You could stay at the house and never leave if you wanted to. The house had all amenities that you could ask for. There's a little country market store, coffee shop about a 5 minute walk down the road that is the essence of "true" Hawaii. Gratitude changes everything. From taking life's circumstance for granted to appreciating every precious heart beat is a blessing. Every day becomes a time to savor and embrace. These are the thoughts I have immediately when I see an image of my home turf. I arrived on Kauai shortly after my April 2nd birthday in 1970 on a surf trip and basically never left. Serendipity has followed me my entire life. Without it who knows where I'd be or what I'd be doing now. Living here has taught me many things that can only be learned here in a small community populated by many Hawaiians. Work hard, be humble and helping others are some of them. Respect for the land is paramount here. We are stewards of these lands when you understand the meaning the land has to the Hawaiians. The state motto is "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" A very apt motto which speaks to the value the Hawaiians place on the "aina". That has always come naturally to me and was very helpful in fitting into my community here. I believe it is why I'm still here. Hawaii and Kauai in particular is a very sacred and spiritual place in the world. I have heard many of my guests tell me that they felt the spiritual energy strongly here. A rejuvenating feeling is palpable as well. My job is to share my Kuleana ( A uniquely Hawaiian value and practice which is loosely translated to mean "responsibility." The word kuleana refers to a reciprocal relationship between the person who is responsible, and the thing which they are responsible for.) with my guests and allow them to experience the true natural Hawaiian environment which is still the same in my neighborhood as it was 52 years ago. My life has been filled with many serendipitous moments. The trick is to recognize them in the moment and make the correct decision. I'm one luck buggah who knows that and values every heartbeat I'm blessed with now and am grateful for my world and the friends I make along the way doing the jobs I love. Aloha...

Why they chose this property

I think you might say that the River Estate property chose me. I did not choose it. When I first came to Kauai in 1970 with two of my friends on the surf trip, the island in general was much different. We had shipped a car over and spent the first two or three months camping around the island. There were no laws about camping and there were hardly any tourists here. When I first saw the valley where River Estate is located I immediately was drawn to it. A friend of mine told me about a piece of property he was not going to purchase that was in the area, I liked so much. He was going to buy it for $2000 but he told me that the person that was gonna sell it to him was told by the man who had sold the other part of the property that was divided by the stream to that that property for $2000 was the same piece of property just divided by the stream. My friend told me that the person that was selling it was Larry Ching a notorious mafioso type who was basically renting the town of Hanalei and had the only market and gas station in town. He had a bad reputation. So I went to Larry Ching had told him I was interested in buying that piece of property that incidentally had no legal easement to and yes, I had heard bad things about him, but I was not going to base my opinion of him by what other people said. I also had lived in a house on the east side of the island and my landlord there was the most influential attorney on the whole island and Larry Ching's business partner. I had come into contact with two of the most powerful men on the island. Larry Ching told me he'd sell me the property for $7500, $2500 down and $1000 per year for five years no interest. I took a chance and bought it. I went to the tax office and got the names of the people who owned the lots that I could get through to my lot and wrote letters. One woman who was living in Tahiti offered me easement through her property for free. This serendipitous moment changed my life forever with many more to come.

What makes this property unique

River Estate offers a rare combination of luxury, privacy, and an immersive natural setting that creates an unforgettable experience. Tucked away along a tranquil river, this secluded retreat is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, allowing guests to fully embrace the beauty of Kauai’s North Shore. Unlike large resorts, River Estate provides an intimate, home-like atmosphere with elegant, well-appointed accommodations that blend seamlessly with nature. Guests can float from the property to the beach and back, listen to the soothing sounds of the river, or simply relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the riverfront gardens that surround you . The personalized hospitality, serene ambiance, and central prime location on Kauai's North Shore make River Estate a one-of-a-kind sanctuary for relaxation and adventure.

The primary benefits of River Estate are the seclusion and privacy of the expansive botanical gardens and its special location in the scheme of things here on the north shore of Kauai. It's very close to all the world famous beaches north Kauai is noted for and central between Hanalei and the end of the road at Ke'e Beach yet its very private and secluded. You'll relax and rejuvenate your spirit here. The fact you can use the river to access the beach from the house and ocean is not offered by any other vacation rental on Kauai. The privacy and natural setting allow our guests to experience a truly relaxing and rewarding time away from their normal lives and leaves a lasting impression of what some consider to be true paradise. Not many rental homes are kept in the condition that the Guest House is kept in and our guests reflect that in their reviews. We're proud of that. It's our stock in trade so to speak. The property proximity to the spectacular natural attractions of North Kauai and its quiet natural setting help it to stand out among the other rental properties in the area. Come see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
