This place is great! I loved the spacious room and the little outside seating place where you feel like in the jungle. You hear different birds sing out there and it’s very quiet and private. The lady at the reception (Lilian) was so friendly and nice and it was a pleasure chatting with her. It’s also located only a 2mins walk from the centre so a great place to make this your base to go and explore Franz Josef. Would definitely go here again!

We stayed in the executive suites so can’t comment on the other rooms. They were spacious with all the facilities. They have a small patio at the back with two chairs and a table. Unfortunately no views as it butts up to the forest a couple of metres away. Shower was good and beds comfortable. WIFI was poor. This may be because the executive suites are the furthest from the main buildings. Staff were pleasant. The location is good with plenty of restaurants nearby and the glacier tours leave from just down the road.

Nice hotel - shame about the weather!

We stayed at Punga Grove for 2 nights. The room was very comfortable with good self catering facilities and a nice outlook onto a small secluded patio shaded by plants. Unfortunately however our enjoyment was curtailed when the tail end of Cyclone Fehi hit Franz Josef on our first night, resulting in loss of power and cellphone signal to the whole village. The power remained off for the rest of our stay. The hotel staff were excellent in making sure that we were ok, providing a camping stove for us to heat water and a barbecue to cook food. I would recommend the hotel to anyone planning to visit Franz Josef.

Motel with pluses

Stayed in kiwi room. Parking at location check, motel 3 minute walk to all main bars , supermarket , and tour operators check. Easy friendly check in with fresh milk offered for both days stay . Massive rooms with high ceilings , kitchen with facilities, sky Tv channels , large bathroom , bed and sofa check . Negatives : hob in kitchen didn’t heat up enough to cook pasta , slight damp smell when entering . Other than that functional spacious unit to spend 1-2 nights at FJG. Amazing place . Do the treks& snow landing by helicopter ( glacier helicopters) can’t be missed. Good experience . Would stay again and recommend to friends. FJG needs better places to eat though they are so average the restaurants the landing is Ok
