About this property
Charming Antique in Wellfleet Center-- walk to shops, beach!
This lovely in-town historic 1830 Cape-- a bookstore in a former life-- is located adjacent to shops and restaurants of Wellfleet, and less than a mile to Harbor and Bay beaches.
The house has been thoroughly renovated, while respecting it's funky, antique spirit. The home is also winterized, and very cozy in all seasons.
Wellfleet treats: stunning ocean and bay beaches, access to the 25-mile-long, paved "Cape Cod Rail Trail" (dedicated to biking), beautiful woodsy hikes, sailing, kayaking, & swimming in a collection of clearwater kettle ponds left behind by Ice Age glaciers.
You will love parking the car and strolling everywhere-- the grocery store, produce stand & fish market, a weekly farmer's market, the library, an ice cream parlor, and all the shops and galleries of Wellfleet's town center.
A formal front entryway leads to a huge, sunny double living room, featuring a wood-burning stove, an old hi-fi with many classical and world music albums, and a smart TV. The living room leads to a semi-open formal dining room beyond, which in turn opens to the renovated kitchen-- fully equipped for serious cooks. Off the dining room is a shady screened porch, added in 2024.
Both the kitchen and formal dining room have doors leading out to a gorgeous wrap-around deck, partly screened, and a secluded sunny garden full of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. An outdoor shower & clawfoot tub are great for post-beach rinsing! Enjoy picking fresh herbs and greens for dinner. Propane grill and charcoal grill provided.
Also on the first floor, there is a twin bedroom with full bath (shower) and a stackable washer/dryer in the closet.
The second floor has one CA King and one Queen bedroom. The primary BR overlooks the nature preserve across the street, and the Queen BR overlooks the rear garden. Off the shared landing is a second full bathroom with tub.
On the third floor is a large attic bedroom with a Queen bed and its own smart TV-- great for kids.
Note: the stairs here are *very* steep-- and nearly ladder-like between second and third floors.
Both the living room and third floor bedroom have smart TV's. Bring your Hulu or Amazon (or other) account. Free internet access provided. Parking for 3 cars. Maximum of 6 guests please.
Normally Saturday arrivals/departures during summer months.

Fantastic location, spacious, and comfortable property. The kitchen was the most well-stocked rental property I've seen, and much appreciated since we cooked most nights. The host was very comminacative and responsive. Recommend and would definitely stay again.
We recently celebrated my mom’s 60th birthday and our long-awaited family reunion on Cape Cod, and I can honestly say it was one of the most meaningful weekends we’ve ever had. The setting was perfect—peaceful beaches, crisp ocean air, and a cozy rental that felt like home the moment we stepped in.

Thank for saying so! Glad it was a good fit for your family event!
This was our second stay at Laura's house and we found it even more lovely than the first time! Wonderful location, serene garden, antique house full of charm (with modern amenities), kind host who is extremely responsive. Overall highly recommend!!
This place is where a beach house meets a charming European village. Just a three-minute walk to ice cream, oysters, and Hatch’s Fish Market. It feels private, yet Wellfleet’s abundance is just steps away. The house is full of thoughtful and unique touches—custom textile drapes, wide plank floors, visits from goldfinches and bunnies, plenty of comfortable seating and beds, inviting outdoor space, and an herb and flower garden that’s on point. The kitchen is well-stocked (with sharp knives!), and there are several quiet nooks perfect for reading or relaxing. We settled in immediately—plenty of room for our group of four adults and two kids. The owner clearly cares for this beloved home and takes great care of guests. Enjoy!
We had a peaceful and restorative stay at the Bookstore!
The house was very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped and functional. The beautiful flower and vegetable garden was an unexpected- and delightful-surprise! Communication with the owner was always very prompt and clear. Walking access to the town of Wellfleet was a great advantage and be sure to try the delicious gelato at Gelato Joy- just a few doors down!
Vacation destroyed. The moment we walked in the house it was dank and smelled of mold and mildew. After an hour I realized the place was full of cat dander. The mold was more than visible around the kitchen sink. The wall behind the stove was full of oil and food stains. The cracked and filthy recycling bin - full of wet slime. Most windows had no screens if you wanted fresh air and a number of windows had cracked glass. The one or two windows that did have screens were torn and covered with tape. Before we even arrived we were notified that the downstairs toilet was out of commission for the weekend and a worker would have to come back Monday to replace a part. The upstairs shower had a liner that was completely molded to the point you would not want to be anywhere near it. Additionally, the house was extremely dark and the tiny old lamps in each room were so useless you would have to wear a head lamp to read. WE LEFT THE EVENING WE ARRIVED. The cherry on top was when we notified the landlord and asked for a PARTIAL refund she was extremely defensive and rude about everything then said if I was so deadly allergic to cats I should have notified her before renting and that I should take a Benadryl. It was a shock to say the least. For the record I am NOT deadly allergic (mildly at best). Basically this house is a run down mess that should not be rented. “Charming antique” is one thing, dark, damp moldy and in disrepair is quite another.

This is the first I've seen of the photos you said you'd send me when making out of character accusations about my home. My other reviews speak highly of my home. People with allergies should not rent private homes in which allergens are/have been present. You know there was a cat because of my sign on the back door - not some overwhelming presence of cat, BTW,
I’m hesitant to submit this review because we want to come back and don’t want Laura’s place to be booked!! We’ve been staying in Wellfleet for a week or two in the summer for almost 10 years and we’ve never stayed anywhere as lovely as this house. The location is fantastic, and the house is a wonderful mix of old charm and modern comfort. It feels like a place someone truly loves and looks after! Best of all the beds were so comfortable, especially after a long day in the sun! I agree with other reviewers that the stairs are steep, but we didn’t find it to be a problem (folks with mobility issues likely would have trouble). We were there with our 10 month old son who’s walking and climbing, and we found it pretty easy to just close the doors to the stair areas. Laura was also a gem as a host - extremely responsive and kind. Overall highly recommended!
Very lovely spot to enjoy a quiet few days on the Cape in fabulous Wellfleet. Beautiful home, great kitchen and an herb garden, wonderful reading lights and even couch throws! Our kind of place. Just to note: the stairs are seriously steep, the very old or very young would need assistance!
Amazingly well equipped kitchen and lovely dining room. and since we prepared meals, both were perfect for us.
The village is beautiful and walkable. We loved everything
The house is located walking distance from downtown Wellfleet. It has tons of character and charm with lovely nooks and crannies throughout. The house has been well used and had some odd ways about it because of its age and needed some updates. The backyard is gorgeous and was wonderful to hangout in.
We enjoyed a week exploring Wellfleet and the rest of Cape Cod from this spacious well-equipped cottage. We appreciated the proximity to the Wellfleet shops and restaurants. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking at home and entertaining. So many charming touches throughout this well loved home.
This charming cottage is a short walk from all the highlights of the village of Wellfleet. We loved getting fresh fish, seafood, and produce from Hatch’s each day for dinner. The town beaches are beautiful! Wellfleet is a short drive from Provincetown where we had a great whale watching tour and shopping. The house is comfortable and accommodating. The mosquitoes are no joke, so bring bug spray and prepare for a great lower Cape Cod vacation.
Really lovely house in a great location for walking in Wellfleet. Really clean and even better than the photos, which are great. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend this house, and would stay here again. Our only complaint - not the fault of the owner - was that guests prior to us left 2 empty propane tanks and didn’t clean the gas grill; a pain when we went out to cook, but we left it in better shape for the next guests. Overall a very nice stay!
Charming antique home in convenient downtown location. We’ve enjoyed both of our stays at this property. The home is clean, gardens are gorgeous, and the owner is very responsive.
Such a cute, well appointed cottage close to all downtown Wellfleet amenities. We had everything we needed for a lovely stay. We were there for a wedding at the Preservation Hall. It was great to be so close in a cozy cottage. Owner communicates extremely well and is quick to answer all questions. Highly recommend.
A great choice for us, full of charm and character, so pleasant. A perfect location to set out to parts of cape including 3 nearby surf beaches and also to walk the storybook village for supplies including the amazing seafood we prepared each night hanging out at the house. We all loved it. Hard to climb up to upper floors but for us that was part of the charm. Great garden, many nice surprises with this house.

About the host

I live in Santa Barbara where I work in real estate, write, and advocate for foster youth. I have three grown kids (one of whom built my new deck!).
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with Wellfleet in 1980 when one of my college friends brought me home there for the weekend. I loved how casual yet elegant it was, the Edward Hopper light, the intellectualism of the town. Since my friends' home was an in-town antique, I have always wanted an in-town antique, and when this one came along with "Books" over the front door, I knew it was for me.
What makes this property unique
Sunny, charming, private, happy, and quirky! Serene spot with dedicated open space across the street. Lovely herb and flower garden. Nice new "L" shaped rear/side deck for lounging. Right in Wellfleet Center. Ground floor BR/BA for accessibility.
