About this property
Private Lake Front Home on Lake Toxaway in Western North Carolina!
This home is located 17 miles West from Brevard, North Carolina
directly on Lake Toxaway which is the largest private lake (640 acres) in North Carolina. This is a second home for us and, along with our four married children and a "bunch" of grandchildren, we enjoy this wonderful retreat as often as we can.
The home was designed and built with simplicity of style to maximize the lake front lot, is decorated throughout with both new and old pieces which we have gathered over the years and includes features which make such a place comfortable and practical. The combination Great Room, Dining and Kitchen are fully equipped, bed linens are furnished along with towels/cloths for bath and lake. Most bedrooms are on the second floor (1 on the main floor), some with direct lake views. A large open sun deck plus a screened porch with hot tub provide views of the lake and mountains.
Bedroom configuration includes: 4 BR each with 1 King; 1 BR with 1 Queen and 1 BR with 6 Bunk beds. WiFi and internet access, TV (3), games, LP record player with old-time records, CDs and table top ping pong. Dine in or outside on the deck or in screened porch.
Walk a few steps down to the dock where you can enjoy swimming, sun bathing, kayaking (2), fishing (with proper license) and if you like, a private boat can be rented from the marina and kept at the dock during your stay. The lake is all fresh water, fed by numerous mountain streams, and is always refreshing!
The Neighborhood
Lake Toxaway is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and as a private resort, has been a vacation and summer playground for the rich and famous such as Edison, Ford, DuPont, et al in the early 1900s; and in 1916 heavy rains caused the lake dam to fail. Reopened for new development beginning in the 1950s, families have built their private residences and second homes here, and enjoy an impressive array of amenities; many year 'round. Several thousand acres comprise the Lake Toxaway Estates, and only property owners (and their guests) are permitted access to the lake and environs.
When you want to shop, buy groceries, dine out or just browse, the town of Brevard is just 17 miles away; and the town of Cashiers (emphasis on first syllable)is just 13 miles. The town of Highlands, about 40 minutes away, attracts people from all walks during the high summer season. There you will find antique shops and auctions, boutique shops, restaurants, furniture and more! There are secret hideaway homes here for celebrities, along with country club golf courses and resorts. A tennis court, playing field and community center are provided for people in the Toxaway community (including our guests) just 5 minutes from the home. Multiple golf courses within 1-2 hours away are open to public use. Have you played on a "mountain" course yet? And when you are ready for more strenuous exercise, there are hundreds of miles of mountain trails (improved and primitive) in the area where you can walk, run or ride bikes (which can be rented in Brevard). There are several national forests and park lands in this region including The Great Smoky Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, Cherokee Indian reservation and state parks where boundless trails and fishing streams await your exploration! You will also find the Biltmore Estate and Home in nearby Asheville, NC; the former home of the Vanderbilts. Here you will find tours, restaurants, winery, farm animals, biking trails, hotels and much more!

Frequently asked questions
About the host
Hosted by Robert W. Purcell
We are natives of Western North Carolina and have lived in nearby Brevard, NC for many years. We built this home to underscore our love and enjoyment of family! We use the home often for sharing time together with family and friends.
Why they chose this property
A different way to spend time away from too much commercialization and the "busyness" of the world around us. Slow down. Hide the phone. Strike up a good conversation. See your loved ones laugh! Pick up a good book. Bring along your watercolors and canvas. Take a cool plunge in our mountain lake!
What makes this property unique
The home actually accommodates sleeping space for up to 18 persons; however, we limit the number of guests to 12-14, primarily because there are 3 full bathrooms and we have a septic system installed.
