This was our third visit to this house, albeit 10 years since the last. Here are the pros and cons for anyone thinking of booking it:
First the pros: superb location in a characterful town on the canal (boat trips fun). The house is 2 minutes walk from the lovely square, no less than 6 good eateries within easy walking, and 2 markets per week.
Despite being so central the house is very private and peaceful and the pool and surroundings are the best we have ever visited. Pool towels provided. Plenty of outside space in the large courtyard too, along with loads of excellent outside furniture and state of the art umbrellas.
Excellent kitchen, and who doesn't appreciate a nespresso machine!
As an older house there is no air conditioning but lots of good fans, and despite very hot weather we all slept well. In the day there was always a wee breeze and shade at the pool.
Lots of interesting places within driving distance, but no need to go anywhere really!
Not so much Cons, but things that might not suit everyone:
The interior of the house is tired, as are the fittings and furniture. More shabby than chic to be honest. Doors don't necessarily shut and windows don't always open. The top floor bedrooms are serviceable but basic, some with poor ventilation and randomly furnished.
The "Vigneron" annexe is charming with an interesting layout and a bit of mountaineering required into some of the beds - fun but not for the elderly.
The massive church tower sits above the house and the bells are relentless through the night (we loved it). Pigeons do their exercises in the roof at dawn, but you could take earplugs (or in our case remove hearing aids!). They are quite messy outside too, and overall this is not the place for anyone with OCD cleanliness issues.
It's a tall house and the stairs are long. As older folk we felt a lot fitter in a very few days!
We had a great fortnight in Capestang and I would happily go back. Both the booking agent and the on-call young manager were very efficient and helpful, our thanks to them.
