Newly renovated piece of paradise. Experience Old Hawaii at its best.
Located just past the town of Hawi in North Kohola, this historic Plantation House dates back to the 1940's when the Union Mill company farmed the land for sugar cane. It once belonged to the plantation doctor. Our renovation has focused on maintaining the style and character of the property while modernizing it to meet modern expectations. While not air conditioned the cooling breezes of North Kohala and plantation design make it comfortable all day and particularly at night.
Accommodation The house contains 3 bedrooms (2 queen and two bunk beds) and two bathrooms and can accommodate up 6 guests.
Grounds A ¾ acre lot full of fruit trees seasonally oranges, mangos, papaya, avocado, lime, passion fruit, lemons, cherries and bread fruit.
Amenities A fully equipped modern kitchen, garden room, large lanai, laundry, TV and high speed internet are included. Newly renovated bathroom with tiled floors and large rain shower.
Nearby Attractions A FREE access outdoor municipal pool is 5 min away. Nearby you will find a free municipal pool, beaches, hikes, art galleries, groceries, restaurants, yoga, cultural centre, museums, library and cafe's with live music. Fantastic cycling and hiking/running routes if you like to be active.

The house is an amazingly nice, clean and quiet former plantation villa, really well kept and modernized. Nothing more to wish for and would love to come back if we visit the region again!
FANTASTIC:
Wonderful house, it had everything just like home. The yard was wonderful; plants, trees, birds, chickens, pigs, geckos all fun to watch.
Very relaxing atmosphere around the whole place.
Thanks for staying at our hale. We've just followed on with two great weeks. The hen nesting by the side of the house had 6 little chicks. The whole gang came by every night around 5 pm before heading up the trees to roost for the night.
We so enjoyed this quiet property. Many fruit to pick and enjoy, kitchen is very well equipped, beds and furniture are very comfortable. About a half hour to the beaches and a lovely drive to whale watch as you go. It really is a perfect location for us. Thank you so much!
Loved the home and location. An electric fireplace would be a great addition to help with the dampness. Hope to revisit in a couple of years.

Thanks Todd. Great idea. My wife has often suggested an antique wood burner (too dangerous) but the electric idea is worth exploring. Appreciate your flexibility during your stay in helping us out.
The house had everything we needed. Our family of 5 was very comfortable. Our only recommendation is that the bunk bed room should have a bigger fan.

Old Hawaii at its best
Experience a real Hawaiian feeling in the town of Hawi, in this lovely home. True relaxation and few tourists. Would highly recommend if you are ready for a low key vacation. Just one issue: the home is across the road from a rooster farm, so if you want to experience true Hawaii, bring your earplugs.

Thanks Gail. The roosters do add to the local colour. Happy you enjoyed your stay.
Once again we had an amazing time in Kapa'au. We adventured the whole island, and had a cozy home to come back to every night. Well equipped, clean, and very quiet. I mean except for the roosters and coqui frogs :)
We love it!!
We were visiting family so this property worked out perfectly for family dinners and hanging out. I would definitely choose this property again. It's away from the touristy areas.
This property had everything from beach equipment, washer and drier, and well stocked kitchen equipment. Thank you to our Host.

Thank you for your kind comments Cheryl. Glad you and your family had a good time and were able to benefit from the house.
Spacious house in quiet countryside. Comfortable and with everything we might have needed. Beautiful day- geckos! The First- Wednesday Night Market in Hawi a lovely community event with beautiful hula performances.
Our stay started off a little rough BUT the owner was very good in responding to my issues. This is a lovely place to stay and sometimes cleaners donʻt always do their jobs- it happens. This issue did not hamper our vacation at this beautiful plantation house.
A beautiful home and a lovely location. We enjoyed being able to hide right down the road. We enjoyed the location beaches. It was relaxing. The house is very well. Set up. We are two couples who travel together frequently and this was an ideal location for us. I would highly recommend this.
Very nice and clean old-style Hawaiian home in rural area. It is very private and quiet although it is likely you will hear the resident fowl and frogs. It is very close to a number of historic sites, beaches, and hikes--and interesting country roads. A few stores in Hawi and Kapuu have coffee and other snacks (and local art) and there is a nearby grocery. If you are looking for "off the beaten path" this place should be on your list.

Thanks for staying with us Bill. Please come again.
This Hawaiian style house has been thoughtfully and carefully renovated so that it retains the charm of the 1940s plantation house but is totally comfortable for a longer stay. We loved it. The kitchen is fully stocked with anything you need - including a wine fridge and plenty of dishware and cooking utensils. Large airy rooms, including a sun room off the kitchen and a dining room. You could easily host 12 for dinner, if you're so inclined! Lovely yard, featuring fruit trees and many birds, including chickens and their chicks, who are always entertaining. Kapa'au and Hawi are lovely little towns to exlpore, and the rail trail at the bottom of the road is an added plus if you like running or walking. All in all, we highly recommend this house. Perfect if you want something a little off the beaten path. Oh, and I almost forgot: comfortable furniture for reading, with good lighting! Not easy to find in rentals, so good job!

Thanks for staying with us Cindy. Hope you chose to come again. - Dominique
This is a 3 bedroom home with a large front and back yard. Big private porch looks out on the front yard with a small ocean view. Lots of avocado and mango trees. Feels like you are in a small country town in Hawaii. Umbrellas and beach chairs are provided.
The house was perfect, just what we where looking for. Great location for exploring the whole island. Loved the authentic decor, beds where comfortable, and kitchen was clean and well stocked, not to mention the very large private yard in a quiet neighborhood. We hope to come again next year.
Beautiful plantation home in secluded neighborhood!
We all enjoyed the spaciousness of this well kept plantation home. Kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Keep in mind that the local fauna has a nice chorus going at times - coqui frogs, hens, rooster- which didn’t bother us, but you may want to pack ear plugs. Everything was very clean and tidy and our group had a lovely, relaxing, time. Thank you!
We arrived from the mainland during the COVID pandemic, so my son and I had to quarantine for 14 days. Not a hardship! This sweet plantation house in a bucolic setting provided all that we could need or want. The owner thought of every detail — from adequate amounts of ziploc bags to comfy white towels. The recent renovations make the charming farmhouse style feel up to date where it especially counts: the kitchen and bathroom. Plus, whenever I had a question, the owner’s response was swift and generous. I will recommend this lovely home to friends looking for a rental in beautiful North Kohala.
Catherine and Dominique live on Vancouver Island in the seaside town of Sidney. We have both been entrepreneurs running their own businesses and appreciate service and quality. When not in Hawaii spending their holidays maintaining and upgrading their house, they spend time with our Portuguese Water Dog (Wylie) and African Grey Parrot (Phoebe) boating in the Gulf Islands on a classic 1968 40 ft Grenfell MV. It appears caring for old wooden boats and homes is an integral part of our lives.
Why they chose this property
When looking for a property to call our own in Hawaii, we looked for something which had character and was away from the usual hotel, golf, beach track. We were looking for a place which spoke to the history of the place we had grown to appreciate during several visits to the area. Finding the Doctor's house which belonged to the Union Mill Plantation company doctor, was the perfect balance.
What makes this property unique
The house is tucked away yet close to amenities. A very private isolated back garden makes a perfect sanctuary full of the sights and sounds of nature and the wind blowing through the palms. Frequent sightings of local birds and the occasional wild piggy (harmless) always make meals in the garden room entertaining. A grand lanai across the front of the house is nicely exposed to the trade breezes and a great place to hang out throughout the day. A comfortable living room equipped with a flat screen TV (Cable, Apple TV and Netflix included).
