About this property

Waterfront Cottage Next to Wildlife Refuge

There are few places where you can wake up to a symphony of bird songs, watch herons, otters, woodchucks, deer and bald eagles during the day, see fields of fireflies at dusk and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. This is one of them.
The water front summer beach cottage gives you breathtaking views of the salt pond in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Built into a hill this quaint cottage is bigger than it seems with 5 bedrooms and two living rooms. It over looks a cove that shows off spectacular sunsets from the deck as well as the inside living room or dining area. This cottage is located in a private association on a dead-end peninsula of Ninigret pond.
There is a private tennis court you can walk to and a private beach that can only be accessed by boat. The beach is on the barrier beach that faces block Island. It is the last undeveloped barrier beach on the east coast and it is just gorgeous with a handful of people for miles, even on the weekends.
Boats can be rented from the local marina. The town beach is about a 5 minute drive. The house is next to Ninigret Park which has walking trails, a wildlife refuge, basketball, tennis, soccer fields, observatory, playground and a fresh water pond. Although the town of Charlestown is a quaint and quiet town it has a thriving flea market on the weekends as well as other major events such as a seafood festival, Rhythm & Roots--check the Chamber of Commerce. There are several nice restaurants, shops, as well as art galleries.
Charlestown is about a 30 minute drive from Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casino. It is also 30-45 minutes from The Mystic Seaport and aquarium. Golf, Historic Newport and Block Island ferry.

About the host

My brother Paul and I were blessed with grandparents who had the foresight to see the beauty in what was, at the time, a far off and inaccessible spot. Margaret and Paul Sr. built the Big House in 1928 and it was their passion as well as their home. Grandma hosted the annual Audubon bird count and was hostess to many of the conservationists of her generation. In 1961 my parents built this cottage (AKA the Little House) where we grew up.

Why they chose this property

The house is designed to feel like you're outside even when you're inside. The deck is probably the best place in the world to have a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. Having a second living room downstairs makes vacationing with kids a calmer and more relaxing experience. :)

What makes this property unique

There are few places where you will wake up to a symphony of bird songs, watch herons, otters, woodchucks, deer and recently bald eagles during the day, see fields of fireflies at dusk and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. This is one of them. Check out the video for a tiny taste of what coffee on the porch is like.
