About this property

Mountain Cabin Retreat FAST WiFi, Ski Sipapu,Hike, Hunt,Fish,Art, Taos, Santa Fe

Huge deck with propane grill, table and chairs & hummingbird feeders. Backyard creek with hammocks, picnic tables, chairs, & fire pit.
Well stocked kitchen includes coffee maker w/ coffee, toaster, Keurig, blender, crock pot, electric skillet, mixer, food processor, ricer/steamer, citrus juicer, cake pans, muffin pans and cookie sheets. Refrigerator with ice maker.
Gas heat and wood stove with romantic glass doors. Plenty of firewood.
Lots of free strawberry plants.

Ice cold streams run through timbered mountains. Find your quiet space and enjoy the peace, clean air, dark, starry nights. Leave the mundane things of life behind and discover yourself, your own thoughts and feelings. The back yard is the main attraction for us at Mountain Cabin Retreat. The grass surrounding the creek, the bridge where we sat and dangled our feet in the cold mountain stream, imagining family gatherings around the campfire. The first step through the front door said, “Welcome home”. During our many years here, we have done a lot of remodeling. The quality workmanship is evident the moment you step through the entry door. The wood stove mesmerizes, lighting and warming the hardwood floor. The coved log ceiling beams, called vigas, reflect centuries old architecture. The quiet speaks of reflection on today, yesterday, and tomorrow, on life and purpose. The dark skies look back through millenniums of time and displays an eternity of celestial bodies. Yes, we warmly invite you to come and experience the alluring appeal of Mountain Cabin Retreat.
The 1400 sq. ft. make for a spacious 2-bedroom house. All rooms are large. The cozy, comfy living room has the wood stove with plenty of firewood. TV’s with ROKU, DVD and VCR players are in the living room and the Buffalo Room. The Buffalo Room also serves as an additional sleeping area. There is also the opportunity for wildlife viewing from the Buffalo Room and the dining room. Many times we have seen elk, coyote, birds and more. The hummingbirds are a real attraction at the feeders on the deck.
Special note: bedroom 2 is accessed through master bedroom. Both have queen beds.
The Buffalo Room is on the opposite side of the house, making it quite private from the master bedroom and bedroom 2, and has a sofa bed, futon and a single bed.
No smoking is allowed in the house. Designated outside smoking areas are provided. The last 1 mile to the house is a gravel road that is well maintained by the county road department.

Cozy stay close to Sipapu

We happened to hit a snowstorm just right and had a great weekend skiing at Sipapu. Our hosts had a nice cozy fire going for us when we got there, and they even gave us some tokens for discounts at one of the wineries nearby. One little piece of advice - cell service is pretty bad up there, so be sure to have the door code saved somewhere, because you may not be able to pull up the app. The wifi works great though, once you get in!

South of Penasco

Dirt road to quiet and privacy. Cool evenings . About 45 minutes to Taos which has great food and the Taos Cow. Wife loves the shopping (e.g.Moxie). Josey had a fenced yard and a creek to splash in. We have multiple stays here and the owners have become like family.

Great property with fantastic views!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The space was large and well stocked with everything we needed. In addition, there were VCR and DVD players with a wide range of movies that came in handy after a long day spent skiing (in addition to streaming television access). Great location that offered a fantastic view. We will be staying again!

Perfect Mountain Home

We loved staying at Jim and Mari Lu's home in the mountains above Santa Fe. We came for the feast day celebrations at Picuris Pueblo, for the weaving in Chimayo, and for hiking in Bandolier National Monument, all of which are easy to access, as are Taos and Santa Fe, which gave us all kinds of options. The home is on a safe, quiet mountain road, with a lovely creek out back and hammocks we took full advantage of. It is well equipped, the beds are comfortable, the coffee machine is stocked, and the WiFi is strong. Jim and Mari Lu, who offered homemade salsa to welcome us, were the perfect hosts, unobtrusive but available when we needed them. The "neighborhood" is very quiet, and the night sky is an astronomer's dream. We look forward to returning.

Great Getaway

Cute little house not too far from Sipapu and Taos. We had a group of 7 ppl and we all loved it. We got to see snowfall at the cabin and it was gorgeous, especially over the back yard. Everything was well stocked, we love having the washer and dryer and the wood stove was nice as well. There isn't a lot in the area so we cooked at the cabin a lot and the only thing we missed was a dishwasher. The host are awesome and readily available if you need anything. We would definitely stay again if in the area.

Nice quite getaway

Went with my daughter and her 2 Boston Terriers. They have a really nice place by the creek with hammocks, a fire pit and it’s secluded so you can enjoy the sound of the creek and relax. Hosts were great, always checking with us and made us feel welcomed. There is a strawberry patch there and we were allowed to pick them and the host even brought us over some salsa she made which was super nice of her. Will definitely stay there again if I ever come back that way.

Just breath taking

Great place for a quick vaca. The house was peaceful serene situated next to a beautiful stream. That can be heard from the second floor window. Jim and Mari Lu were great hosts for showing me the ropes to VRBO and provided us with fresh salsa which is amazing. Thanks so much we definitely will stop again maybe for a longer stay.

Loved this place

This is a very nice house in a quiet remote neighborhood. We enjoyed spending time at the private yard with a creek and watching hummingbirds. Jim and Mari Lu are a lovely couple, they make sure you have everything you need, and suggest what places we could visit. Thank you for the homemade plum wine and salsa. they were delicious!

Awesome hospitality!

We took our first ski trip last week and stayed here! There were 2 families of 4 that stayed very comfortably. The only draw back would be the 2 bedrooms are right next to each other, you have to walk through one bedroom to get to ther other. Our families have know each other for years so wasn’t a big deal. Jim and Mari Lu were amazing, answered all of our questions and brought over salsa, cookies and other stuff throughout our stay. Would recommend and we would stay again.

Perfect place to relax!

We stayed for 6 peaceful, relaxing days. The temperature was perfect. Outside was chilly at night, which gave us the perfect excuse to make hot cocoa and "churros". We had plenty of things to do since the property is close to Taos, Chimayo, and the Santa Barbara hiking trails in the Carson National Forest. We enjoyed our walks there very much! There were flowers everywhere. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It had a very well equipped kitchen and the bathroom had many extras. It was a treat to watch the hummingbirds in the morning while enjoying our coffee in the deck. Mari Lu and Jim were always a phone call or email away for all our questions. This is the second time we have been there and we are already planning our next visit. Thank you, Mari Lu and Jim for sharing your house.

Very Lovely and Relaxing Stay

I rented this property with my wife and daughter for a week long get-away and very much enjoyed my time. The stream behind the house was, to me, the most enjoyable part. There is open green space on either side of the stream and they have a nice picnic area there. The hammocks were also a nice touch. Inside the house was also very nice. The kitchen had the essential cooking dishware for meals in-house and there was outside seating. There were labels in some locations to help us find our way around the various switches and such. They were nice to have when we first arrived until we got used to the place. The owners were very kind and engaging as well. Before we arrived Mari Lu called us and gave us a rundown of the local area (what to see, where to eat, attractions). This was helpful getting us started and made the trip more enjoyable. I would recommend this property for those looking for a relaxing weekend in the New Mexico Rocky Mountain Region.

Cozy, comfortable

We stayed one night with our dog on our way home from a trip to the southwest. Home has been remodeled with some work ongoing. This is not a problem as the bathroom is up to date and just beautiful. Also a new deck is attached with several hummingbird feeders within view. There is a carport attached to the house for your use; a very nice bonus for us as we arrived after dark. The outdoor temperature was in the 40s while the carport’s thermometer was over 60 degrees. There is a beautiful drive from the home to Taos we highly recommend. Lots of pines and Aspens can be seen along that route. Owners were very attentive to our needs by having a fire going in the wood stove and offering their assistance. We were fortunate to meet Mrs. Jensen. She couldn’t have been nicer and gave us some of her delicious homemade salsa. She also provided a printout of activities in the area.

About the host

Hosted by Jim and Mari Lu Jensen

Host profile image
We are baby boomers, 24 years into a great marriage. We're both still quite active and hope to be for some time yet. Mari Lu is a Santa Fe native and Jim is a native Oregonian. Mari Lu loves cooking and we both enjoy the rural mountain life, hiking, fishing, 4 wheeling, camping, canoeing, remodeling, and look forward to some traveling in the future.

What makes this property unique

We were moving from the Oregon desert and wanted mountains and trees. Mari Lu was originally from Santa Fe and has family in the area. Once we found Chamisal and met the wonderful people here, things just started falling into place. The first time we walked through the front door, even though it was night, I knew this was our home. The creek in the back yard clinched it. It was in need of remodeling yet as a retired carpenter and the remodelers that we are, we knew we could do it. We moved in and went to work replacing the roof, exposing and coving the vigas, tearing out the old flooring and putting in the hardwood flooring, adding the wood stove, replacing doors, adding the patio and deck, etc., etc. It's been a labor of love and we are very happy to make it available for others to enjoy. Perhaps some day we will move back into it.
