The space Aristotle's Retreat with WiFi Internet. 1/2 acre lot allows room to spread out a bit with privacy in the back yard, deck & wooded area. Two of the four bedrooms are detached (and private) though just a few feet from the house and its facilities. Walk 1/4 mile downhill to the Pacific! Incredible ocean view faces West for sunset every night and ocean sounds to rock you to sleep. Great for personal rejuvenation or board retreats. Lots of private sleeping space including: 4 very private sleeping room featuring a king, 2 queens and a full size bed, w/ two full baths; and sofa bed in the living room. Plenty of blankets, pillows and clean linen and towels. Gas heat in main house. Living/great room is 20' x 35' with attached full kitchen on one wall, vaulted ceilings with with large dining table that seats 8 easily. Extra single mattresses are stored in the garage for larger groups. It's also perfect as a solitary retreat or for a romantic getaway.
It's a 1/4 mile walk steep downhill to the Ocean (and then back uphill) or drive 1 1/2 miles to trail heads at magnificent Shelter Cove Beach to the south where the surfers gather or Black Sands Beach to the north. There is ocean fishing and a free 9 hole golf-course. We're near the ocean trailhead of the BLM managed King Range Conservation Area so you can do a day or multi-night hike in the heart of the legendary Lost Coast.
Fully equipped kitchen with all appliances, plates, glasses, utensils, pots, pans, coffee machine, 4-slice toaster, toaster over, blender, can opener, coffee grinder, microwave, etc. We provide coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, random herbs/spices, shampoo, soap & toilet paper. There is cul de sac privacy, room to turn your boat trailer around, and there's no traffic whizzing by. We have no TV/Cable reception; however, you can watch one of the hundreds of in-house DVDs and VHS's on our four flat screen TVs (two 55 inches, one 42 inch and one 32 inch) in the bedrooms and the living room, each with a dvd/vhs player and remote.
Neighborhood Overview: There are only 3 houses on our street and we are at the end. The neighbors are great but everyone in Humboldt appreciates and expects privacy. So we don't allow loud parties.
Cell phone reception is OK. We have a landline for local or incoming calls only. We have three new restaurants, 2 coffee houses, a pizza shop, a deli with Fish and Chips. There is an incredibly well-stocked and reasonably priced General Store a mile and a half uphill.
Full disclosure: The house is 42 years old and not perfect. This is the original kind of airbnb--someone's home that they've invited you into--as opposed to a professional, no-one lives there place maintained by an outside agency. So while there is more than enough room for you, you'll still find a few of my family's belongings in designated drawers and closet spaces, with some family ornaments and photos on the shelves. There are plenty of hangers, closet and drawer space for you. It's like staying at a friend's house without them there.
Everything is washed, counters wiped, floors vacuumed. But we don't use an iron, so towels, sheets, etc. can have creases. Towels pillow case colors, dishes, glassware & silverware don't 100% match. But there are more than enough towels, dishes, utensils, and appliances, all clean and ready for you. The living room is spacious and the deck is large, even if an old redwood board might creak here or there.
Our reviews are excellent and the house is set up to allow you to feel comfortable. You can re-arrange any of our twenty or more pillows for your comfort. Same with the fans we have--re-position them as you wish. There are many extra blankets. I use the black out curtains in all the rooms in the afternoon to keep the sun out while I'm outside in the summer, if it's hot. We face almost due west so we get sunsets every single night.
And while there are two bedrooms are inside the house (with 2 sofa beds in the living room) two of the four bedrooms are detached--one in the garage and one in the "outbuilding." Both are clean, newer, and comfortable. All beds are in good condition. Both detached bedrooms are a 10-second walk to the main house.
The fridge is large. Plenty of organic coffee, black tea and I keep the sugar in the fridge. This is a perfect place for hikers to sleep one night before they embark on their big trek.

The home was beautifully located, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. I was grateful to find this stay that allows pets. Hope to return in the future.
Property was exactly as advertised in listing, nothing fancy but comfortable space and beautiful view. Property owner was very helpful and the checkin process was easy.

It was lovely having Candy and her family there. She's right, it's not fancy--I think of our house as unbreakable--you can have kids run about and lounge about without worrying about breaking anything! But we provide clean linens, towels and plenty of silverware and utensils, etc., so that you can do your thing!
It's a cozy place with one huge main room (open plan). Very private setting, and quiet. Nice view of the ocean and sunset from the deck. The owner is very responsive. You can just hear the ocean roar from the house.
Thank you Darrell! The house is very comfortable, open floor plan makes it great for family or couples and has beautiful views, quiet neighborhood and easy to find. The host is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Beautiful sunset. Will definitely be back and will refer it to friends. Thank you again for all you helo

House with a view
The beds were great and the blankets were warm and we were very comfortable. The kitchen was well supplied and all the utilities worked fine. I wish the weather could have been a little warmer but that is the chance you take with mother nature. All in all we had a wonderful weekend.
Bedrooms 3 & 4 are not accessible from inside the house.
Garage area needs some deep cleaning. (not kid safe)
Beautiful views. Easy access to beaches. Responsive host.
We had a great time. Thanks!
We had a great time, and the host was wonderful to deal with. My one regret is that the place was represented to be a four-bedroom unit, which was key for my group of three friends sleeping separately. The 3rd and 4th bedrooms were almost unimaginable as places to stay in late winter/early spring. I ended up sleeping on the futon in the living room, which was very uncomfortable.

I'm glad Scott had a great time. However the third and fourth bedroom are very warm in winter w/electric heaters with comfortable name brand mattresses with lights, one with TV, both with desks. The are advertised as requiring a few seconds walk outside to the main house, so I'm surprised Scott seemed fazed by this. This is the first guest out of hundreds I've had that has had this complaint.
Myself , my partner and our 4 teen aged boys stayed there for over a week. It was such an amazing experience. Daryl is such an awesome host, so very helpful! He bent over backwards to accommodate us as the road slid out and was unable to make it home back to Oregon. His property is so special, as it is his sanctuary and makes it available for other to enjoy. It truly is a unique gem with beautiful oceans views and easy access to all shelter cove has to offer. I highly recommend this experience to all! Thank you Daryl

So happy to be of service. My job is to give my guests a comfortable, practical, fully supplied and relaxing base station to go out and enjoy wonderful Shelter Cove.
This place was perfect for us, two couples for three nights in April. The highlight is the expanse deck with a great view overlooking the ocean but surrounded by forest as well. Perfect for watching the sunsets, which were glorious, and perfect for stargazing at night with the very dark sky here. We had a great view of the Orion nebula with binoculars. Birds included the very entertaining and beautiful Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Stellar's Jay, and Purple Martin. Food preparation was easy with a large kitchen, well-labeled dishes and pots and pans. Area hiking and exploring was rewarding. We loved it. House could use a few minor repairs, but this wasn't enough to lower a five-star all around rating. Thank you to the owner and manager of this delightful spot.

Robert was an ideal guest who, along with his family, left the place in clean, great shape. He is an intelligent man who understands the nature of what is important in life. Thank you!
Large house right in the heart of Shelter Cove. The house has everything you need for at least 6 people. There are extra rooms in the garage and an outside room for extra people or if you need more space. Note that there are TVs, but only VHS and DVDs are available to watch. Wifi is great around the house. Host is informative and quick to respond. Overall, it was a welcomed retreat to see Shelter Cove.
We spent our labor day weekend Darryl's place in Shelter Cove. The house was able to accommodate all of us, 10 in total. Lots of DVDs and toys to keep the kids busy. Amazing views from the deck. Darryl was very good at communicating with us and provided good documentation. Overall a great experience.
This house has an amazing view and the overall environment of clean air, thriving wildlife and peaceful surroundings is ideal for rest and relaxation. Sitting on the deck and reading, or playing board games or even surfing the internet is a relaxing and refreshing experience. The property itself is clearly someone's home, and is full of Robert's personal things and furniture that has been in use for some time. It isn't a dedicated rental property that looks like an Ikea showroom, so if that is what you are looking for, it won't suit. The house more like staying a friend's parent's house in the country with some stuff being worn, but comfy and cozy.
Robert was extremely communicative, and very clear and helpful with respect to local resources. The location of the property provides a great sense of isolation, and being surrounded by nature while still having good access to center of Shelter Cove, reasonable broadband performance and amenities like a fully equipped kitchen and widescreen TV's in every room (bring a computer with an HDMI output - no cable or satellite).
Really the ideal country getaway! We'll definitely be back.

Thank you. This is an old school vacation rental, where we stay a good amount of time ourselves. We love it and are glad you did too. Come again.
The house is pleasant and good for kids. The house in general needs a little TLC but again was very pleasant and a great spot to get away from the world. the owner was very accommodating and was quick to respond with any questions. the view from the patio was wonderful and the neighbors were nice.
The house is comfortable and clean, has everything you need for a relaxing stay. We cooked, sat on the porch, looked at the ocean, and just had a really nice time. Our 4-year-old loved all the toys and games. The star-gazing was extraordinary, and the location was perfect for access to Black Sands Beach and other beautiful beaches. The host was great, super communicative, helpful, and clear. A lovely experience!

Fantastic guests. Welcome back anytime. Thanks for working with me during these crazy times and being so communicative yourself!
I traveled with a group of six to the lost coast, 2 adults and 4 kids under the age of 12. We had a great time! It was similar to staying at a friends house for the weekend because there were some of the owners personal belongings at this rental but we found it useful and it made it seem more cozy. Darryl was very up front and honest about everything and responded very quickly with every question that we had. He has taken extra precautions with cleaning and preparing the rental in between renters, now that we are in a pandemic, and that made us feel safer about traveling during this time . The day we left we accidentally left some items at his rental and he has offered to mail them to us which is very nice of him. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, especially those who are concerned about coming into contact with corona virus while traveling and also for larger groups as this rental allows for more privacy being that there are 4 rooms, plus extra beds and space as well. Very kid friendly!
Happy traveling everyone !
And thanks Darryl ! We hope to enjoy the Shelter Cove area and your rental again in the near future!

Gross
The place was gross the owner must live there when not renting it. Weird. Very misleading on the number of beds ! weird sleeping room built in the garage. no air not usable. Ants every where.
Would not recommend or stay there again! Filthy is a understatement !

Please read all our great reviews here. This a friendly, comfortable, clean place that opens our home to you with our hearts. The description's first sentence states that it’s live-in part time! We are a 5-star super-host on another site. This party showed up with more people than stated, plus a dog. But that's how this rental is: flexible. You can be you. We make certain you know before you rent that two of the sleeping quarters are detached, though each with a desk, a fan, windows, quality beds, new flooring, and storage for your things. There are 7 moveable fans and a portable air conditioner for circulation. The place is vacuumed, has clean sheets, and tons of clean towels. The tubs, mirrors, sinks, and stove are washed and the floors vacuumed. However, if a guest leaves 8 pizza boxes with uneaten pizza (instead of using the compost outside) along with overflowing garbage, it could attract some tiny ants. We ask that recycling be washed and food be composted to keep things calm. It's the woods. Guests are not given bad reviews. That's how we are here in Humboldt. We are grateful people for the bounty and beauty we have. If anyone has a problem with our place, we will make good on it—fix it or even provide some kind of refund if something isn't right. Our place is happy, friendly, welcoming and just right for a visit to Shelter Cove. Message us first and learn more.
