Lovely spot for our family!

We really enjoyed our stay. It had the nicest coffee bar of anywhere I have stayed with Vrbo. It was a cold weekend, but otherwise I would have enjoyed the front porch! The owners gave us good ideas of local places to visit. I would stay here again!

Quiet cottage in Waco

The location was great. Quiet place outside of Waco hustle & bustle. Clean, comfy & hosts were very kind. The ony thing i would suggest is that they advertise the no TV in the description. Also, door code was the wrong number. Had to call the host. Other than that, it was very comfy.

For those with little outside interest

Not conducive to be outside in heat. View from cottage and porches limited with over grown bushes so not as pictured. Art in cottage nice. Clean and fresh remodel with good furnishings and decor. Air in cottage cool. No books or reading material except about Waco. We had a teenager with us so having no TV or board games to entertain was limiting. Host were nice folks. It is a duplex and housing close on both sides. Not a view as pictured. There was a very busy, narrow and loud road very close to the cottage. We liked being in the country and near Homestead Farms and Village which we were revisiting. The communication from the host was pushing the Homestead Farms, their connection?

Perfect place!

Very easy to check in and out, very comfortable spot overall! The air conditioning worked great and it was in an area with no light pollution so it gets nice and dark at night! So pretty! We absolutely loved staying and will definitely come back!

Communication and wifi

I texted the owners 1-2 weeks prior to our stay asking a specific question about guests. I never received a response. Cell service at this property was limited at best. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi was not any better with limited to no service during our stay.

Songbird Haven was so relaxing and convenient

Arrived a little early but was no problem, just waited a bit outside. Garry And Shoshanna are very nice and warm host. They saw to any needs or questions we had. Easy to communicate with. We loved Homestead Cafe, only across the road within 2 miles from us. Great Food. The home is cozy and very comfy. We just stayed there 2 days and relaxed and sat on the porch. Clean and pretty.

Cute little cabin in the woods! The trees and shrubs were beautiful! A little further from downtown than i thought, but it was worth it! The owner cane over and told us about a lot of other things to do and he was very kind! It was a great little get away!

Exceptionally clean, comfortable and away from congestion.

The cottage was exceptionally clean. The furniture was very comfortable - not the worn-out stuff we sometimes contend with. All pots, pans, dishes, silverware, soaps, coffees, spices, bathroom amenities, etc were furnished although, except for the coffee, we brought our own. The heater / a/c units worked flawlessly. We were very pleased with the unit.

About the host

Host profile image
Pursuing a simpler, more traditional life in the country was not always close to our hearts. My wife, Shoshana, grew up just 30 minutes from Manhattan. I grew up in major metropolitan cities such as Beirut, Singapore and Hong Kong. My parents were expats working overseas for an American corporation during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. I came to live in the U.S.A. for the first time in 1977 and settled in the New York City area. I was 18 years old.

Even before we married, both Shoshana and I made life changing decisions that led us away from the hyper-urbanism of the New York City metropolitan area and introduced us to a more traditional family life in a rural setting. After we married in 1978 and were expecting our first child, Shoshana left her career as "a Gibbs girl" in New York City to become a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom. (Such a radical "career move" was virtually unheard of in the 70s!) Still, the idea of having a large family fit perfectly with our desires to rediscover a more traditional family life. It also fit with our desires to experience a close-knit, intentional community life with neighbors and friends.

So, over the next 20 years, we ended up having eight children - five boys and three girls! We have been happily married for over 40 years and now have ten grandchildren.

“Songbird Haven," our two bedroom country cottage, is part of our story. It was originally built in 1990 to serve as our family workshop where I worked with my boys in the evenings making cutting boards and hand carved wooden spoons, which we sold at the Homestead Craft Village just three miles down the road. Eventually, one of our sons transformed the old wood shop into a comfortable starter home for himself and his bride.

After six years and three children of his own, my son moved to his own home just four miles away. And now, the old wood shop-turned-starter-home has been remodeled for Airbnb guests!

Why they chose this property

We lived in Waco nine years before purchasing our place in the country. We moved in 1999 to be closer to friends and the folks at Homestead Heritage Craft Village. As our homeschooled children grew older, they began taking classes at the craft village and even started working there full time after leaving school. Finding our 7-acre piece of land just three miles from the craft village was a God-send for us.

What makes this property unique

We are conveniently located less than three miles from Interstate 35 and 10 miles from the Silos, Magnolia Market and most of Waco's major attractions. Our favorite spot is just three miles from us at Cafe Homestead and Homestead Craft Village with its cluster of artisan craft shops. We encourage all our guests to make time for breakfast or lunch at Cafe Homestead, one of the finest farm-to-table restaurants in Texas, as well as a walking tour of the craft village to see the artisans working in the Potter's House, the School of Woodworking, the blacksmith shop, gristmill, Fiber Craft Shop, Basket Shop and cheese shop.
Songbird Haven is located in a quiet country setting surrounded by farms and small homesteads. The cottage is located on a circle driveway at the entrance to our property. Friends and neighbors travel the paved country road next to the farmhouse. We live on the same property behind the farmhouse with our grown son. We also have a tiny house on our property, which our son hosts through Airbnb. While Songbird Haven offers lots of peaceful privacy, you may see a guest drive by or one of us mowing, pruning trees, feeding the chickens and ducks and such.
We are surrounded by paved country roads that makes our farmhouse easily accessible by car. Aside from the Silos and Magnolia Market, the Dr. Pepper Museum, Baylor football stadium and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame are 12-15 minutes away. Waco's Cameron Park Zoo is one of the most beautiful in Texas. Cameron Park itself, located along the Brazos River, is a favorite destination for mountain bike enthusiasts, as well as hikers. The Waco Mammoth National Historic Site is just six miles away, too.
Swimming, fishing, camping and water sports abound in and around Waco. We are 10 miles from the BSR Cable Park and Surf Resort, 11 miles from Lake Waco and 17 miles from beautiful Lake Whitney, a 24,000 acre reservoir.
