About this property

La Lomita, Quiet Hide-Away, Big Sky, Northern NM Food, Spa, Ski, Hike, Raft

La Lomita is located in the area where La Familia Valdez has a 300 year history. La Lomita was conceived, designed and built with hospitality and spirituality in mind. It is a place of healing and rest, of relaxing and dreaming, of renewal. It holds mystery in the howling coyotes, the whispering junipers, the shifting arroyos, and the colorful wildlife. Bienvenidos! Nuestra casa es su casa.

Read our wonderful reviews and let our many guests describe the La Lomita experience. (See review section)

Nestled into the Black Mesa, La Lomita is the hub surrounded by Abiquiu to the northwest, Ojo Caliente and Taos to the north, Chimayo to the east, and Española and Santa Fe to the south, all with local art and food just 10 to 55 minutes away. It is 12 miles from the relaxing mineral springs and spa at Ojo Caliente, and 30 minutes from Los Alamos and Bandalier National Monument.

The spectacular Santa Fe Opera is 30 minutes away, as is its neighbor, the Santa Fe Flea Market with treasures made by 'artesanos' from Mexico, Guatemala and other native areas (open in Spring and Summer).

On the way to Taos, via the High Road through Truchas or the route along the Rio Grande through Velarde with the Black Mesa Winery, you will find beautiful scenery and native Hispano-made tin work, retablos, santos, and weaving from traditions begun hundreds of years ago.

River rafting in the Rio Grande or floating over the river gorge in a hot air balloon, are adventures waiting for all ages, as are the ski trails and golf courses, all in close proximity to La Lomita.

Stay at home and climb the Black Mesa, part of our 9 acre 'back yard', and if you reach the top (about 45 minutes of spectacular climbing), wander across the top of the Mesa and see the Rio Grande flowing below. Or grab your easel and paints, camera or writing pad, and capture the breath-taking, mountain scenes all around you. Need to relax? Try tai-ch, yoga or gentle walking around our juniper, piñon and desert-flowered landscape, and let the many visiting songbirds lull you into a peaceful siesta.

Keywords: On 9 acres, solar adobe home with covered portal (porch) facing the Jemez mountains, designed with quiet and the spiritual in mind. The terrain, including the mesa high above the house, suggests privacy. ¡Se habla español!

About the host

Hosted by Carl and Gretchen Valdez

Host profile image
Carl Valdez is a native of the Finger Lakes area of New York State and Gretchen is a native of Minneapolis, MN where they live and have raised 8 daughters, 8 grandchildren and a great-grand daughter. Carl is a veteran of the US Air Force of the Viet Nam era. Both are retired teachers, but Carl works full-time as an ordained deacon in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Su ministerio es primeramente con los de habla hispana.

Carl is named after his paternal grandfather, Carlos Borromeo Valdez. His father's ancestors originally settled in Abiquiu, NM in the early 1800's, then in Los Valdeses, Colorado (now Seven Mile Plaza) between Del Norte and Monte Vista in the San Luis Valley. The church there, San Francisco de Asís, was founded by Juan Pio Valdez, Carl's great (5 times)-grandfather who was raised in Abiquiu. The land on which the church sits is called La Loma (the Hill) near the Rio Grande; thus the name for our home, La Lomita. Our home is situated 100 miles south, also very near the Rio Grande.

Some of his aunts, uncles and cousins eventually moved back to Española, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and it is primarily in Monte Vista and this area that he and Gretchen began regular visits more than 30 years ago.

Why they chose this property

In addition to the above family reasons, we became enchanted with the beauty of northern New Mexico, hearing the language of Carl's father, the music, the restaurants with authentic northern New Mexican food, and even watching the hummingbirds.

What makes this property unique

We love the excitement of watching our grandchildren start 'the climb' to the top of the mesa (five have made it with a lot of help from grandpa) or climb on the surrounding rock structures, watch hummingbirds dive and look forward every day to a new adventure - just minutes away.

We are delighted that there is something to do year around. In some months, it's possible to ski in the morning (Taos) and golf in the afternoon (Albuquerque).

We are also pleased to have a modest collection of reading material including New Mexico history and New Mexican authors, mysteries, nature, and spiritual topics. A number of visitors have commented that they have enjoyed reading on the portal (porch) without interruption (other than hummingbirds), and others have enjoyed adding to our growing collection.
