This is a wonderful place and we are thankful for you sharing it with us. Beautiful renovation of the cottage, stunning views, and so peaceful. We loved it!
Growing up here on the big island definitely makes me appreciate everything this island has to offer. While Puakea ranch may be for those who want to be with nature 24/7, the ranch was run down and you might be better off paying for a hotel room because there were lizards, wasps, bees and bugs everywhere. There was no cell service at all (which was disclosed at booking) and the wifi hardly worked and wouldn’t connect (a big problem!).
I was born and raised on a ranch here on the big island so I’m used to getting down and dirty but that was nothing compared to this one. When turning in for the night, it was very hard to lock and secure the doors or entries into the house (there were five!). The door in the master bedroom, the one in the kitchen, and the front door were VERY hard to lock.
The private pool on the property was nice and relaxing (we jumped in the first night we got there) but the next morning when we went to the pool, it was super cloudy. We didn’t swim in the pool the rest of the weekend because of how dirty it looked ( and that doesn’t happen over night.
As I said, I grew up on a ranch so I’m used to things like cockroaches, lizards, ants and even bees. But for the price of this property that you are paying each night, I prefer all those bugs to be outside (which was sadly not the case…).
We also booked this place based on the pictures used to advertise. I know living here that we have our wet months and dry months, but when we stayed at this property (June) the yard and landscape was DRY. No green, whatsoever which was a little sad because we planned on playing games in the yard but couldn’t because the grass was sharp and almost like pins and needles.
Needless to say, my friends and I had a very nice time spent here at the ranch because we had each other and the memories made but would most likely not return or recommend this property to any family or friends of ours.
You are better off paying for a deluxe suite or room at the Marriott or Hilton. We paid almost $2,700.00 USD for Friday (Afternoon)-Monday (Morning)! Definitely not worth the price, but if you are down for “nature” in the house with you during your stay, this may be the place for you.

Aloha,
You booked a Historic home on a Historic Ranch in the dry side, during a sever drought!!! To say the ranch is "run down" is a demonstration of your lack of understanding that the homes were built before your tutu was born. Bees are supposed to be here. We make our own honey. Wasps come for water in a drought. Did you see them by your pool? Because we spray for wasps and nests every check in.
If you leave the doors open at night with the lights on, bugs come in... Gecko's are part of life in Hawaii. And, the wifi worked perfectly for the guests who checked out the day before you and LOVED it.
It seems you would prefer to be with 100's of people, in a cookie cutter resort, for more money per night, without a kitchen or private pool, so you can have over watered chemical grass, avoid bees and and have cell service. This is historic, rural and authentic Hawaii. NOT the Hilton my friend.
Private plantation house with pool. I could stop there. Coffee on the wraparound deck. Private swimming pool and loungers. Romantic bathhouse. Daybed with a view! Away from the crowds and meet authentic Hawaii. There’s no AC but plenty of windows and fans to stay cool enough. This place is the definition of relaxation.
My wife and I came to HI for 2 weeks. The first 5 days were on Ohau at a high end resort. Once we got that out of our system, we came to the Big Island for eco-tours and adventure. We wanted a natural setting away from the crowds. Puakea Ranch more than delivered. We were a little skeptical about no A/C (we live in S. FL), but the house was always comfortable and at night even a little chilly. If you love nature, you will love this place. We fed the horses, the donkeys, the goats, the chickens, the ducks, the wild peacocks and more all on the property. We were delighted one morning to see a momma wild hog and her adorable 10 piglets grazing in the yard. The house gives you a historic feel with modern comforts. the bath house was fabulous! The view from the porch is fantastic. You'll never enjoy your coffee more. The proximity to Hawi was a nice bonus. It's a quiet little town with nice shops and some good eats (Bamboo is highly recomended for dinner). If you insist on 5 star luxury amenities and if a gecko or two getting into the house bothers you, this may not be the place for you. But if you appreciate a historical house in a beautiful natural setting, Puakea Ranch is a home run! We can't wait to return.
We loved Yoshi’s house and the whole property. The house was so charming and well equipped, the bath house was such a wonderful space! The view and the surrounding farm animals were such a treat! We will come back!
The property (Yoshi's House) had everything you could ask for: separate bath house with huge Japanese tub (filled up like a waterfall) and three headed shower, private pool, huge private yard, swing, hammock, grill and huge wraparound oceanview deck. Perfect spot for relaxation. The house itself was comfortable for family of four and could have fit more than that easily. Lovely day bed, full kitchen. No AC but not needed with all the overhead fans. This was our second stay and we plan on returning,
Amazing Hawaii Ranch! The Garden, the animals, the house, the views were all spectacular. We will be back!!

Our stay in Yoshi's House...
Our stay in Yoshi's House was magical - a terrific
ending to our month long visit to the Big Island.
Indeed it was the highlight! It has all the amenities
of a fancy resort as well as the privacy of your own
place (estate, I should say). Sitting anywhere on the
wrap-around lanai you can watch the whales
jumping in the ocean or the rainbows popping up
from time to time when small showers pass by or
the sky filled with sparkling stars. You can take a
dip in the pool anytime - or even skinny-dip it is
so secluded and private. And, as we did, you can
have guests for cocktails and/or dinners - the
kitchen plus outdoor grill provide all you need for
entertaining. There is plenty of space and it is all
so tastefully decorated. We have recommended
Puakea Ranch to many friends who, like us, don't
like big resorts but who do appreciate very nice
(upscale) places to stay.
A genuine thank you for creating a truly lovely
vacation spot on the Big Island. We will be back!

Our family had a truly unique and luxurious
experience. Our children 9 and 5 were able to
explore, hike, and run free on this amazing
property. We loved the gorgeous private pool. The
location of the property was superb. We were able
to conveniently go to the beautiful beaches and
other parts of the Island, but then come back to our
serene retreat for relaxing dinners and an amazing
ocean view at sunset. We enjoyed having other
friends staying on the island come and visit us. The
house is beautifully decorated with unique touches
everywhere. Luxurious linens, towels and other
amenities. The bathhouse is extraordinary. Even
the kids WANTED to take baths. We also stayed in
the Treehouse which was another special
experience and the children especially loved it. We
spent a few nights at one of the local resorts and
the ranch was by far the best part of the trip. We
can't wait to return and hope to do a family reunion
there.

This was our first visit ...
This was our first visit to the Big Island and it was amazing. Beautiful ocean views, millions of stars at night. Kids loved the the animals and the hiking trails on the ranch. Our bungalow was perfect for our family 4 and easily accomodated several large parties with friends. We're already planning our next visit and can't wait to go back.

Staying in "Yoshi's House...
Staying in "Yoshi's House" was incredible! The views! The small town next to the ranch! The activities (especially snorkeling and fishing) so close by! The galleries! The ALOHA spirit!
GORGEOUS decor, so comfortable, not like a large corporation hotel, but MUCH BETTER! It's the personal touches; the things I've never seen before.
I highly recommend staying here, you will be so glad you did.

We had the most amazing stay! We frequent The
Big Island often and usually stay at one of the large
resorts. This time we opted for a different
experience. This property is so beautiful and
magical. It is a great escape from it all. We enjoyed
cooking out, hiking, relaxing in the hammocks and
the sunsets, of course. Our kids had a great time
running around and exploring. The bungalow is
very tastefully done and has the amenities of a five
star hotel. The bathhouse was an added luxury we
very much enjoyed. We definitely plan to return
soon. Many Thanks!

Our family loved staying ...
Our family loved staying at this ranch. The house
was beautifully decorated, very cozy and fun for our
kids!! The views of the ocean are stunning. We
enjoyed the freedom this property allowed our kids
- they could wander around very safely, go on little
hikes and enjoy the farm animals. We fell in love
with Lola, the ranch dog!!! We took day trips to
beautiful place all around the island. Much better
than your usual resort experience. We recommend
coming with your family, and friends - and they
could book the house down the road!!! A very
different and wonderful way to experience the big
island.

With a passion for historic preservation and a desire to raise our children in a rural environment, we relocated form Venice Beach, CA to The Big Island and began the restoration or our Historic Puakea Ranch Property on the Kohala cost. We enjoy tending to the gardens, chickens, cows and horses at the ranch that allow our friends, family and vacationing guests to enjoy a truly unforgettable Hawaiian vacation.
Why they chose this property
The Ranch is a very important historic site. Once a thriving Hawaiian settlement, later a plantation homestead and working cattle ranch, the property is steeped in natural beauty and so close to the ocean, Hawi town and the best beaches on the island. The natural beauty of our 100 year old trees, ancient rock walls, surrounded by sweeping ocean views sets this property apart from absolutely everything else. It is truly one of a kind. Restoring this historic property and uncovering the deep history here has been an absolute joy. Being able to share the ranch with others makes it that much more special. This property deserves to be experienced and enjoyed.
What makes this property unique
The ranch is set on a beautiful and very private location, yet just 2 minutes to great local restaurants, art galleries, activities and the best beaches on the island. Our guests enjoy simple pleasures like swimming, relaxing in the hammocks, collecting fresh eggs from our chickens, picking fresh herbs out of our gardens, visiting with our horses and hiking the ranch grounds any time. The ranch is wonderful for families with children as they can roam freely on the without worry. The ranch is a private oasis filled with wonder, beauty and must have luxuries like the most comfortable beds and the finest linens, fully equipped kitchens and spa like bath houses. After all, you are on vacation.
