Kiddville Ranch. Site of Historical Gold Mining Camp. Pets welcome!
PETS WELCOME! $225/night for up to 4 guests. $20/night per additional guest. Plus VRBO service fee and 6% lodging tax. Kiddville was a small gold mining camp in the days of the settlement of the Black Hills IN THE LATE 1800's! It was then abandoned after the gold rush. The vacation home originally was the two story miner's boarding house. The boarding house was then converted and re-modeled into a MODEST family home in the 1930's, and the property became a private, 38 acre, ranch/homestead. And, again, in 2007 the home was updated with new plumbing, carpet, beds,... The location is 9 miles NW of Custer. Six of these miles is well maintained gravel. The second floor of the Vacation Home hosts the three small bedrooms and the full bath. The main floor consists of a living room, kitchen, dining room, laundry area, porch, and small sun room. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds. The third bedroom has two twin beds. The original homesteader/ranchers (my grandparents) from the 1930's lived in the house for 75 years till 2007! The home is located on 38 privately owned acres; no other inhabited dwellings. Solitude for you! This acreage is located in the heart of excellent National Forest deer/turkey/elk country. There are no other inhabited dwellings on the 38 acre property. Ranch cattle may be found grazing on some of the (fenced) acreage. The five acre yard hosts no livestock. USFS adjoins the property across from the front door. Historic buildings yet on the property are a mine assay office, caretaker's house, a barn/corral, and cabin. Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave are some of the nearby attractions..

We really enjoyed the property and the surrounding grounds - our dog (leashed) love exploring the various outbuildings and fields. It’s a very unique property that has all the solitude someone could ask for.
Perfect setting to relax and enjoy being with family
Very peaceful setting. Nice to be away from town and close to wildlife and nature. Intriging to read about history of house and property. Great family retreat!
We had a wonderful time at the ranch for our 2nd visit to the area. House was well equipped and comfortable. Perfect location for riding our UTV to many beautiful locations and close to town for food, groceries and gas. Thanks for sharing your family home with us!
Very private and comfy home. Kay was very easy to communicate with, she even stopped by to say hi. Kay told us the history of where she grew up, we really enjoyed her conservation.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property and particularly appreciated the notes throughout the grounds about the history and family who built it. Staying here was like stepping back in time to experience an earlier lifestyle but without having to sacrifice modern conveniences. We certainly plan on visiting again and plan to book for a longer stay next time.
Kiddville Ranch is a beautiful gem in the Black Hills. Full of rich history and stunning landscape. A quiet retreat tucked away in a peacful valley. My husband and I stayed a week with our 2 boys (age 3 and almost 2) and our dogs. We all enjoyed eating meals on the picnic table and letting the kids play in the nicely mowed grassy areas. Great central location to all southern and central Black Hills attractions. Kay was such a kind and hospitable host, as was Tricia. Thank you for sharing your wonderful family home!
Great location to Custer state park and downtown Custer. Reading and hearing about the family history in the clearly cared for property was a fun bonus. Working with Patricia and Kay was our pleasure.
We so enjoyed the space and exploration area this house gave us! Our kids and dogs loved hiking through the forest right outside the door and checking out all the historical buildings on the property. The well water took some getting use to, but other than that everything was great. We really enjoyed our stay!
Patricia is a very gracious, helpful and accommodating host. Anything we could have needed was there. Lots of great places to visit and see right in the area. Very serene and peaceful setting.
This is the second time Ive stayed at Kiddville Ranch because I love the seclusion and the history of the place. Youre not stuck inside but have 40 acres to walk. Its not fancy, but offerseverything you need.
My wife and I really enjoyed the property! It was fun coming home every day around dusk and seeing different wildlife walking through. Our dogs also loved every bit of the area! The house had everything we needed and Kay was very friendly. We’re sorry we missed her when she stopped by. We would definitely stay again.
My sisters and I enjoyed our vacation and this was a perfect place for us to stay. Kay our hostess was as nice as could be and very responsive with coming over to replace batteries in the tv remote. Loved the history of the place as it reminded us of our grandmothers house growing up. Loved coming back in the late afternoon to the peaceful and quiet valley after a day of excursions. The place was well stocked, clean with ample room for 4 adults. We will definitely book this place again if ever in the area again.
We stayed here for 5 nights. Listing was very accurate, house was clean and ready for us! The property was peaceful- it was easy enough to get to town if you wanted but house had all the amenities we needed to cook and relax. It’s the perfect location for any of the Black Hills tourist attractions. We had no issues and owner was very responsive and pleasant when we called to check in. I would go back again and will recommend to family and friends.

Best vacation cabin I’ve ever stayed at! Peaceful but also spooky in the best ways. Tons of space. Felt like camping in a ghost town. All the members of our group were beyond pleased. Even the ghosts were kind and welcoming
We had a great stay! If you desire peace, quiet, a beautiful setting, and everything you need to unwind, then this is the place. Make sure you read up on the provided history of the property and go explore! That includes hiking on trails where you can appreciate the incredible Black Hills. Kay was awesome and very accommodating. You will not be disappointed if you stay here!
Able to have much needed rest and relaxation. Historic house has all amenities. Towns people are friendly. Shopping is good. Other more busy towns are 15-30 minute drives. Outdoor beauty is everywhere.

This is a photo of my parents and your hosts, John and Kay. The vacation property was Kay's childhood home. We wish to share this fantastic location with its unique history with you!
Thanks! Tricia
Why they chose this property
The homesteaders of the 1930's were my grandparents and the property is a treasured part of the family that we wish to keep. It is our hope that it will become one of your valued memories as well as you stay at an original Black Hills Gold Mining Camp and homestead. Though the house is completely modernized, it yet holds a piece of the past that is becoming difficult to find. The MODEST home is like 'visiting grandparents on the farm', as many of our guests say. It is a friendly, down to earth atmosphere. Each of the old buildings in the yard has a sign on the door telling what part it played in the old west.
What makes this property unique
The houseyard is adjacent to Public Black Hills Forest land, and surrounded by our own private ranch acreage, so you may hike and explore to your heart's content! Wildlife visits regularly (deer, turkeys, elk, coyotes, squirrels, songbirds,...). And if you have not experienced the clean smell of pine trees or the sound of silence, or a view of the stars without street lights, you are in for a treat! *A yard light is available if you like too! The location is at 6000 feet altitude in the protected southern Hills, so the weather is the best you will find in these parts! There are two window AC units in bedrooms upstairs. And a portable AC downstairs. Generally, though, the home is quite pleasant with just a breeze through an open window!
