The Neighborhood:
The Gold Coast Historic District is a historic district in Chicago, Illinois. Part of Chicago's Near North Side community area, it is roughly bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street.
The Gold Coast neighborhood grew in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire. In 1882, millionaire Potter Palmer moved to the area from the Prairie Avenue neighborhood on the city's south side. He filled in a swampy area which later became Lake Shore Drive, and built the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure designed by Henry Ives Cobb and Charles Sumner Frost. Other wealthy Chicagoans followed Potter into the neighborhood, which became one of the richest in Chicago.
In the late 1980s, the Gold Coast and neighboring Streeterville comprised the second most-affluent neighborhood in the United States, behind Manhattan's Upper East Side. Today, the neighborhood is a mixture of mansions, row houses, and high-rise apartments. Highlights include the Astor Street District and the James Charnley House.

We enjoyed the surrounding neighborhood. The condo itself is just ok. Spooky side entry door and ok interior. Had a good time overall.

Hi, Thanh! First of all, we want to thank you for choosing to spend your time in Chicago with us. We are a little disappointed with all the nice words and then the 3-star overall review. Our main goal is to make sure that our guests have the best experience possible, but if problems do arise, we try our very best to make things right in any way we can. The entry door and outside of the home are out of our control. We appreciate your time leaving us with a review, this will truly help us improve our service. Again, thank you for your time, and wish you all the best in your future travels!❤❤❤

Overall good
Overall great location, in downtown Chicago! Checking in and out was very easy. Enough towels and blankets provided. Apartment was very stuffy but they did provide fans, only 1 window unit upstairs, so not a lot of air moving overall. Carpet very dirty, didn’t want to walk around barefoot. Overall good experience, you get what you pay for, with rental properties.

I didn't even see a single rat in the alley way or underneath the stairs towards the entryway. The downstairs bathroom's exhaust fan doesn't even drip condensation on you when you go to the bathroom! And I didn't even have to use a spoon as a screwdriver to turn the hot water on for the basement shower! Very secure environment with all of the locks and bolts for the multiple entryways.

Thank you for such a humorous and detailed review! We’re delighted to hear that the property exceeded your expectations in so many ways—no unexpected critters, no surprise drips from the bathroom fan, and hot water with zero improvisation needed! 😊
We’re especially glad you felt secure with the locks and bolts ensuring a safe and cozy stay. Your sense of humor made our day, and we truly appreciate you sharing your experience. We’d love to host you again for more hassle-free and amusing adventures!
Unfortunately, the conditions of the property did not align with the advertisement, and there were several significant issues that made my stay uncomfortable and unsafe, and the lack of proper maintenance. 1. Security and Safety Concerns:· Building Entrance: The main entrance to the building was broken, which meant anyone could enter the building without restriction. There was no effective security beyond a small camera.· Side Entrance: The private side entrance was in poor condition and extremely difficult to open. The digital smart lock was malfunctioning.· Apartment Identification: The apartment did not have a visible number on the door, making it difficult to locate. · Access to Basement: The apartment was located next to ladder leading to a basement area which casued me an additional safety hazard.2. Poor Condition of the Apartment:· Temperature: Upon arrival, the apartment was freezing, and the thermostat was not functioning. Although the issue was later addressed, the response time was slow, and it was clear that there had been no prior checks on the heating system.· Unpleasant Odor and Uncleanliness.

Great host but faults advertising
The best part of this property was the location and the great communication from the host.... I'm not kidding the hosts were amazing with responses.... but then everything seem to run down hill from there. There is a very nice front entry but seems front entry is only for paying renter. Super scary alley access that not only had rats (dead and alive) but there was postings about "collection" of them, back stair to get in the apartment were slick when wet and over all rickety to say the least. Overwilling plug-in all over the apartment had to air out upon arrival. Found mold in the 2nd bedroom, carpet on the main floor was ran down, stained and tack strip was exposed at the entries of the kitchen which would poke if you didn't have shoes on. Beds were great, towel and other toiletries were dollar store quality and limited.

Thank you for your feedback and for recognizing our communication and the convenient location. We’re sorry to hear that some aspects of your stay were not up to your expectations. However, we respectfully disagree with a few points.
The alley and back stairs are regularly maintained for safety, and we have not received similar feedback from other guests regarding these concerns. Additionally, the cleanliness and upkeep of the apartment, including the carpets and mold issues, are areas we take seriously, and our team is diligent in addressing these before each guest’s arrival.
We regret that you felt differently and wish you had brought these concerns to our attention during your stay so we could have addressed them immediately.
There was a hole in the ceiling right outside a bedroom, and water was dripping to to floor. Carpet was soaked and smelled moldy. You can see inside the ceiling and it was very moldy. Called the property manager late evening and they told me that they needed to talk to the team whoever that was to make a decision on refund and the team would be available the next day. The next day I called again and was told that I needed to stay as scheduled to get a partial refund and they wouldn’t know how much.
Floor was dirty. Shower curtain was very moldy. No air conditioning in bedrooms.
Stay away from this property management.
False advertisement and bad communication. They only refunded a very small amount.

Hi Johnny, we are sad to see this review. We only occupy the one apartment in the building. The upstairs unit flooded which led to the issues above. We offered a full refund but you insisted on staying and us not sending maintenance. We did refund though so I am unsure why still the hostile review?

Chicago
The entrance to the property looks like a war zone. Down a muddy, broken glass strewn back ally to an iron gate fortified by unpainted plywood (which I suppose was for privacy, clearly not for aesthetics ). Then up one flight of rickey, old, falling down staircase that must be in violation of the building code for both the steepness and tread depth. In the morning homeless people were sleeping on the discarded couch outside the iron fence. Hence probably the need for the fence.
Once inside, the unit had clearly been serviced, cleaned and probably well cleaned. However, the sofas and throws in the family room were filthy with years of stains.
It is understandable with an older building that things like bathrooms and doors may not be new, however all of these need repair: bathroom doors delaminating, paint that looks like it was applied with a broom, and shower window repaired(?) with duck tape.
All in all the stay can be summarized by saying we left after two nights.
We chose the unit for its location within the city, which turned out to be perfect. The unit itself however is in no means in keeping with residential homes in the area and hence cannot meet expectations of people renting.

This is such an unfair review of our lovely home!
The building asks us to use the backdoor rather than the lobby due to longterm tenants. WE ARE IN THE CITY. DOWNTOWN CHICAGO, the 3rd largest city in the US.
There is no violation or any codes being broken. The building is owned by the church next door and everything they do is in compliance with city legislation.
There are not homeless people sleeping outside of our home but the church does host monthly food drives that did coincide with your stay.
Once again we are DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. The greatest location in Gold Coast in the city.
We agree that our cleaners do a great job and the home is cleaned and serviced. The building is older, yes but this home is about the LOCATION. Once again we are in DOWNTOWN CHICAGO!
Very clean, phenomenal location!! My family and I stayed here for three nights and had a blast. Plenty of space and you can't beat this location. Would absolutely love to stay here again, thank you!!

Thank you for being such a great guest, Carly! You are always welcome in our home and we look forward to hosting you again the next time you are in Chicago, San Diego, Malibu, Lake Geneva, Michigan City, Southwest Michigan, Scottsdale, Pittsburgh, and more coming soon! ❤
Pros: location, price, easy access in and out, great kitchen
Cons:
*No central air! If you're traveling in the summer and like to stay cool, this is NOT the place for you. The one small window unit (for both floors) never went below 73. The basement rooms had no fans either, so it was quite warm sleeping at night.
*The bedrooms are downstairs, so be prepared to carry your suitcases down a steep flight of stairs.
