About this property

Farmstead Retreat with woods, pond, trails and easy access to local attractions

This is a 100+ year old farm home with full interior/exterior renovation to its original footprint and function. Renovation was completed in spring 2021. This setting is perfect for quiet, relaxing time away for individuals, couples or families. Intentional design and style choices honor a traditional older farm house and life experience including: a restored clawfoot tub (no shower), gas stove and cast iron cookware (no microwave), restored farm house sink (no dishwasher). The house IS wifi enabled.

The land is a mix of open spaces and wooded acreage adjacent to working farm land. The farm incorporates sustainable agriculture and farming methods with an emphasis on soil regeneration, water conservation and free range grazing and meat production.

A large fire pit area is great for outdoor open fire cooking, s'mores and late night stargazing. Ashland is a 10 minute drive from Chequamegon Bay trails, beach and park access and easy access to Bayfield and other attractions without the tourist congestion! Bayfield ferry to Madeline Island (40 min.), Big Top Chautauqua (35 min.), dozens of parks, water falls, hiking, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing (easy day trip to down hill skiing) and snowshoeing in nearby National Forest land.

The house is cozy and convenient, designed for cooking, conversation, reading and relaxing after days spent in outdoor adventure. Three bedrooms (master on the main floor, two upstairs, smallest bedroom has trundle beds). Bath tub and toilet facilities are separated for ease of use.

About the host

Hosted by Dan & Kathy Smith

Host profile image
Dan & Kathy purchased the property in September 2020 and immediately embarked on a full renovation inside and out. Keeping the farmhouse's main design, they demolished the interior down to the studs and proceeded to install new plumbing, electrical and septic systems, raised ceilings, opened the stairway, replaced and refinished floors, walls, ceilings, etc.

Owners live on adjacent property and look forward to hosting visitors to the area. Dan is a retired business owner and Kathy is a Presbyterian minister.

Why they chose this property

If you truly want a quiet, rural retreat this is a place you will enjoy. With a mix of open and wooded acreage, pond, trails and next to working farm land this is a gentle introduction to living closer to nature. Eagles are regular visitors overhead, cranes, geese and ducks visit the pond, deer are frequently seen and at night coyotes and an occasional wolf can be heard near the river (3 miles away). Coffee on the porch in the morning can be followed by sunsets in the evening and star gazing at the fire pit! The breezy openness keeps the warmest days more comfortable.
