Waterfront Home at the River Haven Sanctuary

Located on a 30 acre, working livestock animal sanctuary, this unique house overlooks Wood River waterfalls and sleeps up to 17, including 13 in the main house (four queens, three twins and a bunk bed) and four additional guests in the pool house (one queen and bunk beds).

The River Haven Sanctuary Guest House features a beautiful in-ground pool surrounded by a perennial garden, a new six person hot tub, four outdoor decks, two living rooms with huge sectionals and flat screens, breakfast and tiki bars, pool house, outdoor shower, picnic gazebo, and an outdoor grill.

Kids (and the young at heart) will enjoy the game room, which includes air hockey and Arcade Classics video game tables. A Peleton bike is also available for guest use in the game room. The pool and pool house area make a great hang-out for teen guests.

Guests are invited to schedule a tour of the River Haven Sanctuary, a 501(c) (3) non-profit animal sanctuary, which is located on-site. Guests can also participate in one of the sanctuary's many animal learning adventures, which include hiking with donkeys, tours and many more. All guests will receive a current listing of sanctuary activities prior to their stay!

Outdoor sports enthusiasts can enjoy water sports direct from the property. Arcadia Management Area, which is located just across the road, offers more than 14,000 acres of public access woodland. It is a regional mountain biking and hiking mecca. A private trail head on the property leads directly to the park. Golfers can tee-off at Meadow Brook or Richmond Country Club - both are only a 12 minute drive away. Ocean State beaches Misquamicut, Matunek or Charlestown Breachway are a 30 minute drive from the property. The Foxwoods Casino and Resort is also a 30 minute drive away.

Special Disclosure regarding the River Haven Sanctuary: The River Haven Guest House is situated adjacent to the sanctuary farm. Resident animals, which can be seen and heard at a distance from the guesthouse property, include donkeys, goats, chickens, horses, pigs, rabbits, geese and dogs. A separate caretakers cottage and a barn are also situated on the grounds. The caretaker's cottage and barn are not included in this rental. No feeding of the animals is permitted.

Family Sanctuary

We are a family of 15- 8 adults 7 children and 4 dogs! We had the best time! The property is sprawling- we played bocci, used the fire pit, hot tub etc. The property is fenced and the animals are enclosed separately. Lots of room to cook, eat and hang out in two large family rooms with tv’s! We had a ball and highly recommend!! The Maiocco’s July 2025

Jeff was easy to work with. Communications were prompt and professional. The property had a unique charm and is bordered by an animal sanctuary and a watershed p[roperty. A small fishing pond is right outside your front window. Only place I know of where you could swim in a pool, roast smores and commune with donkeys all at the same time. The house was spacious and the kitchen well equipped. It easily accommodated our group of 6 adults and 4 children. We had a blast.

Great family retreat

We had an amazing time at Jeff’s property for our extended family retreat. We took advantage of the river next door and kayaked, the beaches and of course the pool. Fun was had by all and we hope to return next summer for a repeat!

Loved this property

This was the perfect place for a weekend with friends. A great kitchen, great common spaces for us all to hang out, and a beautiful property. We were only sad that the rain kept us from fully enjoying all that the property had to offer.

Terrific family reunion stay

Family members from Maine, Connecticut and Delaware gathered at this site and loved it. The salt water pool was a big hit with the kids. Everyone enjoyed the animals, despite the mules saying hello during the night. The house was lovely— large rooms, comfortable couches, big dining table. Best of all were Lucy and Jeff our top-notch hosts.

The Haven is a magnificent stay!

We had a great stay. Every year we have a friends and family reunion. The Haven held 17 of us at night and served as the grounds for over 30 of us during the days. This has been our favorite place for the reunion yet. There are several very comfortable places both inside and out for gathering together. The Haven is charming, peaceful, fun, and beautiful. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

Labor Day Weekend at the Haven

We had a big group stay here so we could hang together and get ready for our wedding in Westerly! The house and property were amazing, so much room for everyone to spread out and enjoy! The hosts were amazing, I definitely recommend reaching out to them to see the animal sanctuary and meet all the amazing animals they take care of! Thank you again Lucy and Jeff!

Excellent for extended family events or retreats

The house was cozy but large enough to host everyone who was staying there (14 people), plus a couple additional families who visited during the day. There's something for everyone, from river activities to a pool/hot tub to trails for walking to a game room and 2 large living rooms for watching a ball game. The fridge was huge, which was a good thing because we brought a ton of food for everyone. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat and the hosts were amazingly friendly, responsive, and accommodating.

Truly unique and special!

A beautiful piece of property and house in the trees and waterfalls with a nearby animal sanctuary. We went kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking and swimming every day. Jeff and Lucy, the owners are lovely people who were attentive to all of our needs (not many)! I hope to go back soon.

Amazing Time

Jeff and Lucy were amazing!!! We were celebrating my mother's 80th birthday and could not have picked a better place. The property is breathtaking. We need to go back just for the tour of the sanctuary. Rowen, Pearl and Luna were my favorite.

Amazing Property! - Unique, secluded, and tons of things to do

Family getaway!

We couldnt have been happier about our stay at the Haven. The home fit our two families wonderfully. It was roomy and comfortable throughout our stay. We loved fishing on the beautiful river and exploring all the property had to offer from the pool and jucuzzi to the amazing animal sanctuary next door. We cherished all of our memories made and hope to return again in the future. The hosts were there for any questions quickky and welcomed any needs we may have had. Wonderful hosts! Great Weekend

As a group of teachers looking to relax after a long school year, this house was perfect. It was spacious and decorated nicely. The pool house was convenient and cute. We enjoyed the pool and the hot tub for the entire stay. It was in a great location, right next to the river and in a quiet neighborhood. It was awesome to see the animals next door from the house. Jeff was a pleasure to deal with an answered all of my questions promptly. We hope to stay again next year!

Family Connections

The Haven was absolutely perfect for our first ever blended family outing celebrating our milestone birthdays! “This is an exceptional place and the hosts are exceptional people. Among its many wonderful qualities The Haven offered our multigenerational family of fifteen: the river for fishing, swimming, tubing; the pool and hot tub; the ocean beach just a ride away; access to the animal sanctuary and the “guided tour” we received; the combination of private spaces with places for our family to gather to visit and share meals; and perhaps most important, the thoughtful small touches that we noticed, appreciated and enjoyed all throughout the house and the property. Guys Weekend

This is a beautiful and really special property. We had about 16 of us come up for the weekend and everyone in group was really blown away by how cool it was. The house was kept very clean and we had plenty of sleeping spaces and bathrooms to accommodate everyone. The kitchen and dining area was great for preparing meals for our large group. We also really enjoyed being able to use the outdoor grilling area. The hosts were very friendly and made themselves available if we had any questions. They even gave us a tour of the property where we had the chance to meet all of their rescue animals. Would definitely book this house again

So much to appreciate at The Haven. The falls and river outside our window. The pool and hot tub, the decks, the beautiful plantings everywhere, the meticulously-kept house, the opportunity for our large family to gather and to spread out: but most of all, the thoughtfulness and care Jeff showed in creating and provisioning this marvelous place. Worked for all 16 ages 13 to 80😀

This property worked so well for us because there were so many places within the house ,the pool house all the different areas outside. Our ages ranged from 13 yo girl, 2 18 yo (boy/friend girl friend ) 17 yo boy, 2 19 yo (boy friend girl friend, 21 yo girl, 24 yo girl, 23 yo (boy friend girl friend) Husband /wife, father,girl friend and us/79&80 ages. Because of set up of rooms no boy girl friends slept together. The short walk to kayaking,etc was used every day! So many outside activities. Always able to eat dinner inside with everyone 😀😀😀

Family vacation

This was one of our best vacation houses (we go every year). The house is so comfortable and so well kept- it is clearly well maintained and everything is just like i would have in my own home. The pool, hot tub and game room were wonderful for the kids and the kitchen and dining room were large snd well equipped to use by a large group ( 6 adults and 4 kids- three generational get together). We all loved meeting the animals in the sanctuary/farm. They are friendly and affectionate and everything is a work of love by Jeff and Lucy. Jeff and Lucy are attentive, helpful and available whenever there is any question. We really enjoyed talking to them and hope to come again. It was a memorable and great vacation week for all of us.

Best family compound to vacation

Great grounds, so much space. There was 9 of us and it felt like we could fit another 9 with ease. Bedrooms were very nice and each room has its own bathroom. Kitchen is awesome. Huge and very open. Huge tv in both family rooms. Pool house is awesome. Great for 4 people with a full size and bunk beds. The fire pit is great and the grill out back is very awesome. Great owners were very responsive. They have a farm just a few feet away and you can buy a ticket to it. We realized at the end and didn't get to explore it. They have a great dog luna and the home is pup friendly so bring the dogs they'll have so much fun. Lastly they have a brooke you go hang out by and awesome trails. We will be back.

Wonderful home for our multi-generational family vacation

From ages 79 to 4 months, every member of our family of 16 really enjoyed their stay. The pool was lovely, although pretty cold. However, the seating around the pool was super comfortable to enjoy the sun. The hot tub was a hit - used multiple times a day by several of us! The refrigerator and freezer capacity was amazing and made it a breeze to stock up on groceries for the week for our army! The kids enjoyed the game room, the adults enjoyed the outside seating as well as walks around the property. The animal sanctuary tour was a fun addition to our stay. The hosts were very responsive, helpful and accommodating all week. This house and these hosts really set the bar high for all future vacation plans we will make. Honestly, the only suggestion we have for improving the experience would be adding window covering options in the bedrooms. The windows offered stunning views and no one was concerned about privacy but it did make it difficult to sleep in. Then again, more awake time to enjoy our vacation, I guess.

Excellent Stay!

We wanted a peaceful getaway to spend time with family and this was the perfect spot! The property is stunning, the house and pool house are amazing, and the pool and hot tub provided the relaxation and family time we were looking for. The house itself is done so beautifully. The kitchen is amazing, the bathrooms are amazing, the bedrooms are amazing, and all of the common areas allowed for different congregations of family members to do their own thing. The house offers air conditioning in every room that works really well. The kids loved the game room and played a lot of air hockey. The teens loved having the pool house to stay in and have a little "freedom." It was great cousin bonding time. We sat outside and listened to the gorgeous waterfalls as we watched the kids fishing for hours upon end, we cooked our own dinners as we chatted away in the kitchen and open living area, and we had a fire in the fire pit at night and made s'mores left for us by Jeff and Lucy. The property is so unique with plentiful areas to sit and relax and to explore. It is like a little slice of heaven. The landscaping is beautiful, and the quaint stone steps all around the property added such charm. The sanctuary is amazing and we got meet all the animals during a tour. Jeff and Lucy were great about everything and are doing great things with the sanctuary. We will definitely be back! Thanks Jeff and Lucy!

Jeff and Lucy run the River Haven Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization. Their mission is to care for rescued livestock animals with the utmost respect and empathy and to inspire others through education and outreach. They enjoy connecting visitors and guests to resident animals and the land they steward.

Prior to founding the River Haven Sanctuary, Jeff worked as a real estate developer and construction supervisor. From 1999 to 2018, he owned and operated Hunsinger Development Corporation, a real estate development firm in Boston, MA. Jeff started his professional career seven years prior as a corporate and securities lawyer.

Lucy worked as a high school special educator with 20 years of service in both private and public education. She draws on her interest in behavior analysis and constructional design for learning to create educational experiences for human visitors to the sanctuary and to optimize enrichment and management practices for animal residents.

Jeff and Lucy enjoy hosting guests at the properties on the sanctuary grounds as it fulfills their mission of connecting people with rescued animals. They particularly enjoy conducting tours and animal adventure activities for guests.
