About the host
Hosted by Kara (Treehouse)
I grew up in Confluence and graduated from Turkeyfoot High School. At about 10 years old I learned to kayak with my dad. Kayaking quickly became my passion, and I raced slalom on the US Team for 13 years. I met my husband, John, through kayaking. In 1997 we started a business making kayaking gear called Immersion Research (IR) in our basement. Eventually we moved IR into the former Confluence high school. In 2013 later purchased it. It's been a dream of ours to build a loft apartment in the building since the day we moved in. That dream finally became a reality and we are excited to share it.
Why they chose this property
The Confluence High School was built in the 1930's and reminded a school until 1955. Soon after it was repurposed into a sewing factory (called Faymore). Faymore employed almost 200 workers until it shut down around 1994. A few years later, we started our own business, called Immersion Research, making kayaking gear and apparel in our basement. Quickly we outgrew our basement, then an old car garage across town. Eventually we talked the owner of the (now empty) Faymore/old high school into letting us lease the building. Finally we were able to purchase the building in 2013. As our kayaking gear business grew we dreamed of building a better space for shipping/receiving and converting the top floor into a loft apartment. Finally in 2022, that dream became a reality.
What makes this property unique
The unique benefits of the Loft include an enormous deck and huge windows with a view of the Casselman River as it meanders towards its confluence with the Youghiogheny River and Laurel Hill Creek just downstream. The Loft is centrally located to town and allows for easy access to the bike trail. The spacious and modern interior gives it a feeling of an industrial city loft apartment. The building is powered by solar panels on the roof. The kitchen is full stocked and fantastic for cooking group meals. Watching birds and eagles soar up and down the Casselman while drinking coffee in the morning is a highlight.
