Located in Banner Elk, this farm stay is in the mountains. Elk Statue and Banner House Museum are local landmarks, and some of the area's activities can be experienced at Sugar Mountain Resort and Flat Top Brewing Company. Travelling with kids? Consider Land of Oz, or check out an event or a game at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Take in the nearby slopes with cross-country skiing and snowboarding, or try out other outdoor activities such as ice skating and sledging.
Built in 1885, this home is one of the oldest in the area and has been beautifully updated through extensive renovations while carefully preserving its historic charm. Surrounded by mountain ranges and century old oak trees, The Historic Farmhouse sits on a quiet, scenic byway, one of the last remaining original gravel roadbeds in North Carolina. During the Civil War, this turnpike was an important part of the Underground Railroad and served travelers for nearly 200 years.
Imagine yourself rocking on the front porch chairs, a drink and/or book in hand. This very spot is where James Wilburn Whitehead, a determined pioneer who arrived in 1872 with a gun, two hogs, and a dog would once look out over the hundreds of acres that he owned. Here, you are able to experience the same timeless beauty and tranquility that drew in the first settlers over a century ago, but without sacrificing any modern luxuries. You will enjoy peaceful mornings and evenings filled with wildlife such as deer and turkeys, but you're still just 2 minutes outside of downtown Banner Elk.
You and your loved ones can settle into the mountain view hammock or circle around the backyard fire pit for starlit conversations and s’mores. The huge master suite is a sanctuary in itself, featuring a private sitting area, a garden tub with a view for a relaxing soak, and a luxurious three function shower. You will surely enjoy the warmth and comfort of heated floors and high end appliances. You're also just 10 minutes from Sugar and Beech Mountain ski resorts, or you can even enjoy an epic sledding hill right outside your front door (sleds provided). Toys, books, and games are also available for children. For those special times of year like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we decorate to ensure your holiday stay is filled with extra magic and cheer.
But what truly makes The Historic Farmhouse special are the memories made with our little farm animal family. You will wake up to the sound of the birds chirping, and then head across the street to collect fresh eggs from “The Ladies” for breakfast. Visit our horse Dusty in the large field, who gallops over and whinnies when he’s called. His pasture mate is our mini donkey, Dobby, who may be small but insists he’s just as grand as Dusty. Our adorable goats BamBam and Molly are always eager to accept a gentle pet or a tasty nibble of fresh grass too! We are offering you an authentic, interactive farm experience that connects you to the land's rich agricultural past and creates one of a kind memories for guests of all ages.
The restoration of The Historic Farmhouse has been a true labor of love for the Lehmann family, as Paul himself grew up making childhood memories within its very walls. The Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina has even recognized our extreme dedication to bringing The Farmhouse's unique character and history back to life. We are honored and very excited to share this especially unforgettable farm experience with you. It would be selfish to keep it all to ourselves!

The house was gorgeous; we loved how they maintained the original farmhouse structure of the home with modern amenities and beautiful interior decor. The cute farm animals were a plus as well!
The host was welcoming and helpful! We enjoyed talking to his daughters about the animals on the farm! The house was perfect in every way! We will be back! Thank you!
We loved our stay at the farmhouse! The home is impeccably maintained and there were too many lovely touches and comforts to the home to list. In addition to all the lovely things you see in the pictures and read in the reviews, we had a welcome package, food to feed the animals, well stocked kitchen, high quality towels and linens, and specialty soaps to enjoy. We enjoyed discovering the historical artifacts preserved on the property. Each room has its own character and charm. Extraordinary! Thank you for sharing your home with us.
What a slice of heaven nestled in Banner Elk! From the impeccable decor, the history, the treat basket, and the little farm with animals- these owners have thought of everything. We even got a personal visit to make sure we were prepared for inclement weather. One of the best places we have ever stayed. Highly recommend. We will be back!
Our stay at the farmhouse was magical. The house is delightfully decorated. It is so comfy, beautiful, and cozy. We loved how immersed we were with nature, the access to the animals was amazing. We also stargazed one of the nights. It will be a core memory for our family. The hosts were also amazing and made the whole experience a breeze.
This home is so much more than just a place to stay. We were in town for a much needed girls trip. From the minute we pulled into the driveway, we were in awe. Upon entering the home, we all fell in love. So much attention and care has been devoted, words don’t seem adequate. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the home is immaculately clean. The best way to describe it is that it feels like a hug. We can’t wait to go back and next time we plan to stay longer.
AMAZING!! This was my fourth time visiting the Farmhouse and we plan to be back every year. It's very cozy and makes you step away from the hustle of life to enjoy its simplicities again.
We had a wonderful stay with four adults and two kids (ages 10 and 8). We visited for Tweetsie’s Ghost Train and loved setting the mood by reading spooky stories to the kids while relaxing in the front porch rocking chairs. The home is full of character and charm. Our kids especially enjoyed the animals and the hammock. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!
We stayed at the Farmhouse this weekend and it was absolutely lovely! It has the authentic charm of a vintage farmhouse, but with modern amenities. It is very well organized and has everything you may need. Paul, the host, is kind and responsive. We loved the cozy fireplaces in the dining room and living area. I just wish we had more time to explore outside, but we were in town for a family wedding and it happened to be an exceptionally cold weekend. We will be back again sometime. I highly recommend this beautiful home!
This property was great! Lots of room and in superb condition. Rustic look but modern amenities. Kids loved the outdoor space and the farm animals. Fire pit and grill with outdoor seating. Gracious hosts! (Did not ski - but the review would not post unless I entered something about the skiing?)
A special place this historic farmhouse, lovingly cared for by our gracious hosts. Ideal location - high on a hill with mountain views - yet just minutes from town. Lots of deer and wild turkeys around besides the pet goats and the chickens whose eggs you are free to collect. Farmhouse is clean and comfortable and has many interesting antiques and other items that add to its appeal. Well worth the stay.
Beautiful historic home that’s super cozy and inviting. The updates they’ve done provide modern amenities yet you feel like you could be back in time with the stone fireplace and log cabin walls. The soak tub in the master bedroom with views of the woods was one of my favorite parts. Highly recommend this place!
I feel like this house is the best kept secret in banner elk. The house and location are even better than the photos. Beds where comfortable and kitchens was modern, although it still kept the historical charm. We wanted to stay longer. If you want to be close to banner elk town center and have access to significant sights like Blue Ridge parkway or grandfather mountain I would highly recommend this this place. Plus you get access to see the animals on the farm. The host left a great care package. They went beyond my expectations
