About this property
Beautiful Gwynn’s Island Waterfront Home
Welcome to our historic waterfront home on Gwynn's Island, VA. This family-owned property offers a relaxing stay with unbeatable sunsets, abundant wildlife, and a private dock with deep water access.
Available for weekly rentals May - September, plus long weekends in the off-season. Message us about rates for longer stays.
Just 1 hour from Williamsburg and 1.5 hours from Richmond and Norfolk, this house and its extensive grounds are an ideal location for family gatherings, fishing/exploring the bay, or a quiet getaway for the remote worker. Full of old-house character but complete with modern comforts like high-speed Internet, streaming smart TV, DVD/VCR player, stereo, and central heat and air.
Sleeping arrangements include 3 queen bedrooms and 1 nautical-themed room with two twin beds/one double bed. There are 2 full bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, the latter being an en-suite with tub/shower combination.
All towels and linens are provided, along with a washer and dryer for your convenience. The kitchen is stocked with all the necessary cookware, flatware, and appliances for entertaining your group, as well as outdoor seating and a gas grill.
Activities:
Gwynn's Island is perfect for boating and nature enthusiasts. Launch your boat at the public boat ramp less than a mile away, and inquire about docking options at our property. No boat? Then use our two kayaks to tour surrounding waterways and a quiet sandy beach within paddling distance. You can also choose to hire a local captain who will pick you up from our property's dock, and take you on a sunset cruise or guided fishing trip.
For more island fun, cruise down the wooded lane by our house on our two bikes, visit the Gwynn's Island Museum, or dine at the Hole in the Wall waterfront restaurant. And only ten minutes away, visit the town of Mathews for fantastic vintage boutiques, art galleries, local restaurants, weekly Farmer's Market, beautiful nearby beaches and much more.
Make sure to pack your rods and reels for fishing and your water shoes for swimming in the shallow waters right off our dock, and expect frequent visits to the property by osprey, eagles, herons, ducks, geese, snakes, deer, raccoons, and crabs.
Basic crabbing gear (hand lines and small manually-operated trap) is provided, along with an assortment of fun games and toys for both children and adults - corn hole, ladder toss, darts, checkers/chess, jigsaw puzzles, building blocks. Sit back and enjoy the views from our indoor and outdoor porches, choose from our collection of family friendly DVD’s, VHS tapes, CD's, and books, or learn about the property's rich, storied connection to Gwynn’s Island and its legendary "Mathews Men."
Important Information:
We limit the number of adult guests to (6), due to limited parking and in keeping with our quiet surroundings. As with many historic homes, there are some basic recommendations for water conservation. We will provide all the info you need for a comfortable stay and we encourage guests to reach out with questions about the property at any time.
